Hey all.

I am currently getting my RB26DETT rebuilt. i am undecided if i should get my crank nitrated. I am going to get it ballanced ergardles.

I also have a few questions...

My aim is to get 600hp out of the engine. so i know in the long run it would be worth it. however, i dont know what the specs are on the standard crank, and if i should worry about it now. so if anyone knows, can they tell me...

Where abouts in Melbourne is a place that i can get this done and also what are the prices that are getting around?

...I WANT my engine bullet proof...

dude, all jap cranks are induction hardend from new, it is about 10 times as thick as nitriding :(

well if its a steel crank anyway,thats what the heat afected areas on the journals are...

(unless you have linished of about a millimetre)

you can do it, but its a waste of cashjava script:emoticon(':lol:')

nitriding a rb crank should be about 100-200bucks. but youl have to get it straightend after... they bend from the heat

Induction hardening I can believe, but less so nitriding as it's an expensive process but I'd be interested to see proof in the case of RB cranks. The reason cranks bend (usually - not always) during nitriding is due to the residual stresses in the complex crank shape generated by microstructural changes in the surface of the crank. It's only a thin layer but the surfaces stresses are hign - and it's also the reason for improved fatigue resistance (as well as improved wear resistance).

In terms of the OP question, try Crankshaft Rebuilders in BlackBurn, but your looking at $500+. BUT don't let them crack test the crank, take it to Aviation Component Services at Moorabbin Airport for that. They have AINDT and CASA accreditation (ie they'll do the job properly).

Surely the place that is assembling/rebuilding your motor would be best to advise you on this... i mean... you are using a proper builder yes?

Hopefully they havent been telling you this

There is no need to have anything othe than the crannk stock for 600hp/447kw...

Or unde 400rwkw is basic terms.

hey not everyone uses a "proffesionial" engine builder, y do they have too? :wub: first hand experience helps u learn alot of stuff (and possibly f**k it all up too haha)

Dont have to...but the more im spending the more id be inclined to. Hell if my engine parts ass up to over 10k, the extra 1k for aprofessional to build it is candy in comparison.

He said "getting it rebuilt" not "i am rebuilding it myself"

So one assumes he is using a workshop in this instance :O

Of course, thats not to say you have to a builder at all, buy all means if you wanna DIY then go for it.

But if you are using one, you might aswell use a good one... that was kinda what i was getting at. ;)

And if his builde has said that, then i would be worried about his expiriance with RB's

From what i just read, i think i wont worry about getting it nitrated.

to clear things up, i am using a propper builder for this, i wouldnt have it anyother way.

Its my mates work shop. before he started working on every day engines, and cars here, he was building engines for Ferrari it Italy. so i think he has been taught from the best of the best, and he would know a thing or two about percission. i trust him alot with my engine.

Also CruiseLiner did you do the work on your engine covers and plenum your self?

Fezza motors arent RB's, there are certain little tricks the run of the mill builder without RB expirience wonty have any idea about.

There have been a few threads about it lately too where people have small problems that would have been avoided

That said, enough outta me on this topic
