No, as far as im aware it activates after 80kmph and only at sometimes? Your hicas light should light up when you turn the car on, only for a second though.

Look underneath your car as previous owner might have removed it and took the light out. It should look like a little motor thing bolted onto the back of your diff.

should i be able to see the rear wheels move???

You would not see your rear wheels move as HICAS only make then turn 1 or 2 degrees.

If you really want to test out if it works go into a slide and see if the rear corrents itself...

question...how do i know if my hicas works series 2 skyline.

has the light on the dash i have never seen it ever light up.

is there a way i can see if it works????

there is a diagnostic test that involves stomping on the brake pedal quickly a certain number of times and simultaneously turning the steering wheel left/right quickly a number of times. i'm not joking.

i've seen it done on my GTR when the hicas (highly catastrophic a'hole system) was still installed and the sucker sat there stationary idling, twitching its wheels left, then right until the diag was switched off. there is a thread on here that describes the sequence, do a search and you'll prob fnd it.

to do the test on ya hicas:

a. turn the key to off then with in 10 seconds after leaving the key on 'on' start the car, then turn the steering wheel 20deg from straight going from left to right then pump the brake pedal 5 times and then pause for a 5 seconds or so then press the brake again.

then you should be able to turn the wheel 20deg left or right and the rear wheels should follow suit on a scaled ratio. :P

Interesting that some people think their hicas does nothing up till 80km/h, it's total rubbish. I've got HICAS on my 33 & it works at virtually ALL speeds apart from standstill. I think it doesn't work when the car is stationary as this places too high a load on the steering motor & prevent tyre scrubbing. Though it doesn't move much at very low speeds it does work.

It has a very specific turn angle which it starts to work at which is very noticeable at even 60km/h or less. I've even felt it working when I've done a u-turn with no sliding or throttle & it directed me around the other direction way tighter than I expected & actually induced a little bit of a tail slide.

& yeah the only time the hicas light should show up on the dash is when you first turn the ignition to on. It should go after a couple of seconds just like half the other stuff on there.

Wow Jarrod, you know everything!! Better tell Nissan Japan that their detailed info and diagrams that has been presented on this forum numerous times and verified by a multitude of expert drivers is all wrong.

A quick search will get you the info you need Gavin.

yeah i found out a neat way nto check if it works whilst having stalling issues...go on a long streight stretch of road, dosent matter what speed but for safety 20 or 30 ks should be sufficient, put it in nuetral, turn the car off then switch it on to reds, then wiggle ure steering wheel round, and there u go, trolley here we go, then just clutch start it in 3rd or turn ur car back on and continue on your journey.

Well I'll be interested to read the documentation you're on about once I find it. Because I'm absolutely certain that it functions below 80. I've had a friend observe it working when I'm manuvoring out of his driveway & have parked it with the wheels not straight. It doesn't move a lot at low speed usually unless u slide it (something already noted on here by others) or perform sharp turns, but it's noticeable none the less. Something that would be worth noting is that things rarely stay the same when it comes to stuff like this.

If the info is in reference to a GTR for instance it's always going to be set up differently since its AWD not RWD like a GTS-T (which I have). This wouldn't be overly complicated to do. I'd also suggest that there were several updates to the system over the years as with any bit of technology (mine is a late model 97) , & each one operating differently. There is also I found out electrical & hydraulic versions of the system (mine is electric) though I don't know if that's just on 32's or 33's just yet, but these would also most likely be different in operation too.

I don't confess to be a know all like you are insinuating, but I know mine definantely works at low speeds

Nice Lee. That's the one Funkymonkey translated from the R33 literature. I

t basically does nothing under 80, which is when the power steering firms up. It's the same on R34 as well.....and no mid-life upgrades so I suggest if you can see your rear is moving it's time for bushes as the 1 degree is almost impossible to judge.

Attached is a nissan diagram that shows that hicas only works at mid-high speed proving that it works 80+

Thanks for the diagram, but you seem to be reading a lot into a diagram that has no specific speeds, & this is for a really good reason.

A system like HICAS is NOT going to suddenly start operating differently the moment it hit's 80kph like flicking a switch. Imagine this:

You are mid turning into a corner at about say 70, realise you are going a lot slower than you need to so you accelerate through the corner. When you hit 80 kph mid corner the HICAS decides to suddenly intervene & kick the rear wheels out....... See a problem here? If the system worked like that every second skyline with it fitted would be in a wrecking yard by now.

I'd say more logically that this diagram shows the systems 3 most extreme situations, & that the system would progressively change between them depending on what speed you car is doing. I have it known for a fact that from my own experience the system will do exactly what is shown on the midspeed scenario from as low as 40 kph. I tend to do this most often when turning at right angled intersections & accelerating hard when exiting them. The faster I go the more aggressive it becomes, but it is not suddenly at 80 kph that it starts working.

Sorry guys I'm standing firm on this 1, maybe you should try refitting you HICAS system & test it out for yourselves.
