Bassy 6x9

Gday fellars, i'm looking for a 6x9 with lots of bass. I understand that 6x9s only comfortably produce down to 60hz i.e. they only produce midbass, not subbass. I don't really want to go for a sub.

Today, I bought a pioneer 6x9 from jbhifi. It was just a cheap one ($88) and it had less bass than stock ripped paper speakers. I was willing to spend more, but I went iwth what was recommended to me.

So in everyone's experience, which 6x9s, which are available atm have decent bass?

Get some 7x10's if u want bass without a sub

kenwood makes some good 7X10's very bassy, recommend getting a good amp for them

same as pioneer. i've got pioneer 6x9's in my rear parcel shelf. they throw out enough bass for now till i get around to gettin some subs

That's so strange!!! today, I just bought another set of jbls, and the bass is still the same. It's crap.

Maybe I need to get an amp? Initially, I just thought it was the first set of pioneers, but now i'm thinking it's something else.

The speakers I bought today were actually put in boxes, just to see if it makes any difference.

It did make more bass, but still, it was about the same as an ordinary 6.5" coaxial

why go to the trouble of boxing 6x9's to get slightly more bass, its easier just to get a sub

I was stumped as to why the 6x9s didn't have anymore bass than a 6.5" coax when everyone on car audio australia said it would have decent bass. I was just trying to box it as per a suggestion off that forum.

I'm gonna be returning all that stuff. looks like i'll be buying a sub. oh well, you have to try to find out.

im thinkin 2 12inchers for my boot install, but i dunno, coz i want at least some space left in my boot... lol

Have you got the phase of the speakers reversed?

Try this.

Fade your stereo to he back. - assuming thats where the 6x9's are at the back.

Then switch the balance to one side - either left or right and if the bass gets louder, then you've wired up one of your speakers backwards somewhere.

It is not a phase issue. I only have one of the 6x9s connected. Furthermore, I checked the headunit wiring before I connected the speakers.

I'm stumped. Does anyone have 6x9s that they would comfortably say makes more bass than a good set of 6x5" speakers?

seriously, I've bought 3 sets (2 have been returned) and I must say that every one of them had less bass than the stock paper speakers (and htey were ripped too!).

JAR - If you're happy wiht the bass coming from the 6x9s that you have, then I would definitely not go with 2x12" subs. If you listen to one 12", it is absolutely massive. Personally, it's too much for me. 2 would make you totally deaf.

I am very tempted to go with a 6.5" jbl bazooka box sub. It's 369 from JB Hifi. Most people probably think wtf? 6.5" is small, but if you go to JB, that thing pumps more than cheap shitty 12" subs do! I'm doing it mainly for the size and weight, because I'd like to retain as much of the already small boot as I can.

I installed Jaycar Kevlar 6x9's (~$150) in my R33 and they sounded very bassy, bassier then the Kenwood 7x10's I had in my previous car. That was with a 100watt RMS amp though... do yourself a favour and get an amp if you don't have one, massive difference - about $300 for a Jaycar 4x100watt amp.

Right, an amp was the next thing on my list. Can someone please explain this, because I don't understand it very well.

Say I have a 100 watt rms speaker.

Headunits normally put out about 5-10watt rms each channel.

Why do I need an amp? If I have the volume on medium on the headunit, the speaker might be getting 7 watt rms.

If I want to have the speaker at the same volume, then it will still be getting the same power regardless of whether it's amplified or not isn't it?

Or do I have it completely wrong?

The old paper speakers will be more bassy because they are a lower rated speaker and you have jack all power behind them. The newer speakers you bought require more power to give the same volume. An amp will fix this and you will be able to give them the rms they require to make bass.

I had a 6" pair of speakers from my old mazda (stockers) that I transported to another car because they were so efficient. They were only rated at I think 10 or 15w but sounded great when mounted well and behind a reasonable head unit.

Get a cheapish amp and see how you go.

With an amp you can adjust the gain. At medium level on your head unit you may be abl;e to dish out 30w rms or more dependingon where you set the gain, where your head unit would only give out say 5w rms

Ah, ok, that makes it very clear.

Would you be able to tell me, does power = volume?

I guess what i'm trying to say is I don't like to pump my stereo because I don't want to go deaf. If I listen to it low to medium volume, will an amp make it too loud?

I went with the Alpine Type X 6"x9". I have a sub and i have the TypeX 6.5 co-axil's in the front...

TONES of bass.. if you can afford the Type X get them. well worth your money!

I am not a bass whore tho. I have a 8" sub for a little extra but it is amazing sound

I love Alpine stuff... that is what my whole car consists of all type X as well... type R is amazing stuff too

power does = volume butit also means clairty of your speakers. i think that my whole system is about a 4250 watt max power system....

6.5co-axial=550 watts MAX power 110 RMS

6X9 = 700 watt max power 150 RMS

8" sub=3000watt max power 300 RMS

this is a great system and would HIGHLY recomend this set up

well, the reason why I ask does power = volume is this:

So from what peopel have said above, a stock 20watt rms speaker is well matched to just a HU because of it's low power requirement.

Say if I install a 100 watt rms speaker, then as you guys have said, without an amp, it will sound shit. But so say if I get an amp,and say give it 30 watt rmw, does that mean that it will be very loud?

Anything can be loud if you turn it up.... for me i just wanted clarity.... if you max out your speakers (RMS) then you will not get clairty... i never turn my system up past "20" (for an alpine deck) it is EXTREAMLY clear sound and it is not super loud.

It is not one of those systems that you will hear from a block away... the sound stays in your car. Unless your windows are open of course

The more power that you can get, that is in your price range, get it because they WILL be a clearer sounding speaker.

alpine "Type R" 6X9's are pretty damn bassy and they will add a depth of sound that you will not get from a Kenwood 6X9 or a department store brand.

I LOVE Alpine stuff... it is always AMAZING quality at a reasonable cost.

and if you are only putting 30watts RMS to the speaker it will not be to loud..

IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW LOUD YOU VOLUME IS!
