Different Tyres

HI,

My friend just bought a car with different tyres on the same axle at the rear. Not sure if the construction is different or not. I told her that you can you be pulled over by a cop because of that. She doesn't believe me.

Apart from being dangerous, any other reason why she should change them asap?

Apart from being dangerous..
What better reason could there possibly be?

I think you will find that just about every state's "RTA" will require that the tyres on each axle MUST be the same (construction, tread pattern, size). They can be different between axles (ie front and rear sets can be different).

yep

highly illegal as each tyre is slightly different

they might be different brand but have the same looking tread, size, feel etc but molecularly they will be different and could cause some very big problems

ie blowing premeturly becasue of diff wear patterns, loss of control when wet as each tyre has diff wet handling abilities, increse crash risk as each tyre will skid diff aswell - increasing the risk of death and severe injury

just to name a few

A roadworthy inspection demands that the tyres on the front front of a vehicle MUST be the same in both size and pattern...

but!! on the rear axle as long as the tyres are the same dimension you are permitted to run with different tread patters

Really? Wow! Doesn't matter if your car is FWD or RWD?

From RTA site:

Don't mix tyre types or sizes if you can possibly avoid this.

Never mix radials with cross-ply tyres on one axle.

If you have only 2 radials, they must be on the rear wheels.

Always make sure that both front tyres and both back tyres are the same.
