Hi guys, I own a r33 gtst and it is time for me to put a intercooler on it ....but what i had in mind was, to buy just the intercooler core and get it fitted to the standed intercooler piping..Is their anything wrong with doing this?? And would i be getting the same performance and cooling gains as getting a full cooler piping kit??

Thanks.

It can be done using the stock engine bay piping but you will still have to replace all the piping below the inner guard.

You will have to make a pipe that crosses back behind or underneath the core and you may find that there isn't alot of space (depending on your car), particularly if you are using a typical 600x300 core with bottom inlets.

I did this originally with a 400x300 core on an r32 without cutting the front bar or reo, so it can be done, it's just a matter of thinking about where the pipes are going to run before mounting the core.

You will end up with an extra 600mm or so length over the typical over the radiator route of piping though.

You can buy intercoolers with the pipe entry exit on the same side, a few members use them with no problems it saves alot in piping and space, I ran the pipe behjnd the FMIC back to factory pipes, there are pics in my gallery, I had to push the FMIC forward a bit more but if I get the Greddy plenum I can plumb it fairly easily, it all looks good oh theres a pic from the front in the MSC article in HPI too.

you talking about installing an smic? or fmic?

Yes i was talking about a FMIC core getting hooked up to the standed intercooler piping.

And also has anyone bought any cooler core off just jap that are salling on this site for $175 and if so are they any good?? and will they be good to hook up to the stock piping??

yeh im also lookin at doin it that way, though i'l prob use a standard cooler from just jap, anyone no where u can purchase 3" aluminium pipes so i can bend them myself? ive found sum but they are too thick, lookin for the same thinkness as the intercooler kits come with.

thanks

You cant use the standard cooler piping for a front mount ic set up, because the standard cooler pipes are for a small side mount. YOu can buy a whole intercooler kit for around 500-600 bucks with alloy pipes from just jap and install it yourself itll save you the hassle of getting pipes made up.
