Hey all,

Every now and then when i start the car it will squeel really loud. Now obviously its a belt but i am having trouble trying to work out which one it is. I have checked the tension on all 3 belts Alternator, Power steering and AC and they all seem fine. So it is making it hard to work out which one may be slipping a bit.

I figure i can count out the AC because it will still squeel even if the A/C is turned off.

Is there an easy way to identify which may be the faulty belt without replacing both of them ???

Cheers Leigh

My car was doin that squeel when u start it in the morning , couldn`t tell which belt it was , one of my mates gave me a can of spray called belt grip 10sec worth of spray problem solved ......... for the time been any way

hmm i think i might just take it to a proper mechanic to get looked at :)

Leech it is probably your fan belt. You can check each of them by testing the tension (with yer finger) and sussing out which one is overtight or loose. If that doesn't really help, try dropping a drop of water or washing up detergent on the belt. The squeeling will go away when you drop the water/WD40/whatever on there and you will have identified which one is the trouble maker.

Adjusting tension is terribly difficult, just a little fiddly. I DIY'd my fan belt on RB26 and now enjoy squeal free engine start-up! :D

Hope it helps. If you decide to keep your hands clean then a mechanic better not charge more than 0.5 (0.75 max) hours labour to fix the problem.

Just reread your post and noted you've already tested the tension with your finger.

hey cowie appreciate the info yea i have checked then tension and it usually only sqeels for 2 - 5 seconds and then stops it's also not all the time...

maybe at times a little bit of moisture is getting on the belts and causing it to slip a little who knows.

also gtrgus cheers for the other idea but sounds like a bit of a band aid fix ot me i would rather just get the belts replaced if needs be

It needs a general checkup anyways i just replaced all fluids and did the general checks but some stuff is better left to someone who does it every day.

thanks again for all the help people :D

Where would you get the belts? Repco or somewhere more specific?

I want to replace all of mine.

hey mate ive found any decent auto shop will have them, just take in the old one u r replacing and it has a number on it like 895 or something which is the actual length of it, and find one the same in the brands they stock (or as close to the size as u can), plus dont forgot to make sure it has the same amount of ribs if its ribbed, like the part no is usually 4pk 895 or something meaning 4 ribs and 895mm long.

hope it helps

Brad

You can get new belts from Repco but make 100% sure you get the right ones. Take your belts off and get them to match them in not only length, but also in width and style of V grooves. I've seen an R33 that got the wrong V Groove style and the belt turned into pieces of rubber coated string in 4 days without even making a sound ( NO WARNING ). It was only that I spotted a piece of the belt hanging down under the car.

I know not everyone can afford to do it, but I just buy genuine belts and change them all at once to avoid hassles for a long time.

As for that Belt Grip stuff, IMHO, avoid using it all together !! It's sticky spray that attracts dirt, dust and sand VERY WELL and in the end, will wear your belts out even faster. It's really only a band-aid solution. Do the job right the first time and you'll save yourself more hassles down the track.
