Morning All,

I drove to sydney the other day and my speedo was screwing up big time reading about 170-180 when sitting with traffic. coming onto the freeway yesterday i was speeding up to merge watchin the speedo to stay under the 180km mark. Just down the road the cops pin me for 141km and dont want to hear a word about faulty speedo  . The car had been booked in to get fixed but they have a bit of work on so its not til next week. Is there anyway i can get out of the points as this will see me catchin the damn train to work for the next year!

how could you not tell that you were going faster than 100? most roads are 60 and thats where you would mainly drive. I think it would be fairly obvious that you would be doing over double the speed limit. Even if the speed limit was 110 (but i'll assume it was 100 where you got on), i hstill think that you dont really have a chance of getting off the fine because of how much faster you were going. Had it been less than 15, maybe.

or you cvould have just gone the same speed as the surrounding cars.. instead of OBVIOUSLY passing them at 141km/h

There were no surrounding cars. i was merging in from a bend. and it was a 110 zone, hence the "freeway". Might have to take my chances with court. Prob will be hard pressed convincing the judge tho.

hmm.. 31+.. damn.. maybe goto court get it down to 15-30 that way you don't get your license suspended for 3 months..

otherwise.. well.. he's just going to tell you that it was faulty, you knew it was faulty and you should have got it fixed.. or don't drive..

meh.. good luck with it though..

Do the crime - pay the time. Not much you can really do about it. Your first mistake was driving the car without a speedo!

Dont listen to him, he has no idea. I can see good reason in your story. I personally would get a letter from the mechanic detailing the fault in the speedo and to say that you have arranged a date to have it fixed. get references from family/friends in the government etc.. I have been let off far worse charges than this by simply representing myself. No need for a lawyer that will just add unnecessary expense to the problem. Good luck.

Talk to a solicitor, and see if you have a chance,

if you had already taken actions to get it fixed, you should have a leg to stand on.

Get it dynoed to see how much it is out. This way you should be able to plead a lower speed limit to the judge.

Good luck

How is the story is going to help in this case?

If anything, admitting that the car was booked in for this particular problem to be fixed prior to being pulled over, is acknowledging the fact that you knew you were driving around in an unroadworthy vehicle, and continued to do so regardless.

hahahaha, nice one fool! you would have been flying past other motorists. And i rekon the judge will laugh at you. You were driving a vehicle unfit for the road - broken speedo. Pay the fine, shut up, and move on with your life.

Hang on, GTS4dood: were you doing 141km/h real time or don't you know?

Were you passing motorist thinking, "hmm why is everyone going so slow"!?

Do you know what Murphys Law states?

Good luck with that

the only way to contest it would be to get all the facts. you will need to get the speedo tested, that would be the main thing you need. the bad part is that your speedo shows faster than you were actually going, not slower.

go to a solcitor/lawyer and see if you have a case, that's about all you can do.

Been there and done that....

Infact I was booked at 149km in a 110 zone.

Had no idea I was doing that speed....

Went to the lawyer....got advice......here it is free of charge....

Pay the fine...cop it sweet...and get on with your life! ;)

It will cost you more to contest......

If you can't tell that you're doing significantly above the speed limit by watching the scenery flash by, you don't deserve to be off your L plates.

Your speedo being approx. 30% off isn't remotely legal, and you knew about it and drove like that anyway. You should have gotten defected for that too; its lucky the cop "didn't want to hear about it" and let it slide.

On that note, why would you admit to breaking the law to a law enforcer? Evidently you want to get busted.

Why don't you just save the courts and police the hassle and just cut up your license, because its obvious you're too damned stupid to drive a car.

to those that said they have done similar and didnt know....LOL

doing 140km/h in a skyline....considering they sit at 2500-3000RPM in 5th gear at 100km/h, at 140 it would have to be 3500-4000RPM....if you cant work it out just by that, then hand in your license for good, not for 3 months.
