Does anyone know much about this engine, or has used it.

Im actually quite interested, but seem to be VERY unable to find any specs on it.

For anyone that knows a bit more, Id like to ask the following questions.

#1 It comes with a tomei oil pump - is this the standard spec model which is worth $1500

#2 Whats the recommended rev limit on this engine

#3 Can you order different camshafts with the engine, rather than the standard poncams?

#4 Does it come with a tomei larger sump or not ?

#5 Whats the static comp on the engine?

#6 What recommended maximum boost can be run on the motor?

#7 Does it have a standard block or an N1

#8 Is the motor custom made for either 32, 33 or 34 gtr, or are they all the same. Will all these parts bolt onto the engine off a r34 gtr ?

Thanks to anyone who can help

I have investigated alot of the complete engine scenarios, as ive been thinking about putting one in my gtst instead of buying a gtr

I have a re-fresh book (all in japanese) about the rb26dett with full color and alot of pages, there is a big section on tomei and their complete engines. Ill bring it here and put some info up next time im on the net

Your looking at 25-30K

Mines complete is a bit more

But add up the cost of getting a GOOD engine rebuilder to make you an rb28 with full hks 2.8l kit and n1 block etc

Hey guys, thanks for that.

I've found a bit more info out from one of the aussie distributors.

Engine cost is 2,020,000 for the complete engine. Exchange price is about 1.7M, but obviously im not shipping an engine back there.

It does come with the Tomei sump and oil pump (which are worth a good 300,000 yen (exchange for the sump). You can order the HG thickness, and the camshaft sizes.

Rev limit is approx 8.5k, (unless you get a damper i think)

Not sure if it is a 32, 33 or 34 motor, because normally when you exchagne, they rebuild your motor.

Also, the guy didnt answer me as to whether it runs a standard N1 block or a standard nissan block.

knore - That book would be excellent, provided it details the genesis limited 2.8 litre tomei engine. Apparently there have only been about 15-20 manufactured. There are only 3 of these motors (apparently) in australia.

Pricing a good engine builder to build a full 2.8 with completely new internals, ported head, etc etc, and you're looking at a good 25-30k

Which is not any more than this custom motor. I assume tomei would know how to build a decent motor ?

I agree a Tomei engine would be a dream for me,but $25000 seems excessive. If they rebuild your motor they obviously dont use an N1 block.I can get their 2.8 stroker kit for $5950,oil pump for $1300.If you allow around $3000 for an N1 block,$3000 for the head work,it allows alot of room for extra costs, plus the cost of shipping an RB26 back to Japan. You also have to allow for the price of the RB26,maybe $4000.

Warranty issues could be a concern with them being so far away.

Still it would be really nice having one....if you can afford it,go for it.

Guys

work out the cost before you talk

Ive looked at the cost of all the parts that are in the engine

For example

Capacity : 2770cc

Max Power : 580ps/7500rpm (DERIVE)

Max Torque : 60kgm/6000rpm (DERIVE)

Boost : 1.3kg/cm2 (DERIVE)

(DERIVE/GENESIS)

Piston : TOMEI 87.0mm

Conrod : TOMEI H-shaped

- 620000 Crankshaft : TOMEI 8 counter weights type

43428 Titanium Piston ring Set

- Oil Jet Spacer : TOMEI

31416x2 Camshaft : TOMEI PONCAM

32456 Head Gasket : TOMEI

36152 Valve Spring : TOMEI A-type

~44352 Valve Guide : TOMEI PBB

20328 Main Bearing : NISMO

15708 Rod Bearing : TOMEI

11088 Rod Bolts

-Head Bolt Washer : TOMEI

-Oil Gallery Orifice : TOMEI

15477 Timing Belt : TOMEI

-Throttle Gasket : TOMEI

-Manifold Gasket : TOMEI

138600 Oil Pan : TOMEI

18295 Oil Pan Baffle Plate : TOMEI

1800 Oil Filter : NISSAN

127512 Oil Pump : TOMEI

~30000 Water Pimp : NISSAN N1

6468 Thermostat : NISMO

8000 Spark Plug : DENSO Iridium

-Color : Powder Coat Painting

-Plug Cover Ornament : TOMEI

-Oil Filler Cap : TOMEI RB26 Piston type

Total cost is around 1,232,496 yen from greenline (plus shipping).

Now you need to build it all. Port the head to fit the bigger cams, add guides, springs, etc. How much labour are we looking at for the head

Bottom end needs machining, and then assembly later on. How much would it cost for all this.

Then thirdly, what sort of quality would you get ?

Okay, given a 5k bill on labour, would raise the total cost of the complete engine to $19500.

Considering this engine costs 2M yen = $23.5k, plus shipping (ignore duty).

AND the fact that a 34 long motor will fetch around the 4-5k mark, means you get tomei build quality for much the same money ;)

This is how I have justified it to myself. Does anyone see any flaws in my theory ?

sounds about right to me, and the stroker kits are damn pricey when buying everything seperate, and mine with the jun crank rods and pistons is about 12k by the time its delivered, and then u got cams, valve springs, retainers, headwork, cam gears, bearings, sump, gaskets, etc etc, which u wont get a cent of change from 25k by the end i reckon with all the little bits and pieces u dont usually even consider in the final price.

i say 23k is a bargain, and most builders in oz who are half decent will have 6 month waiting lists anyway so its possibly a quicker/simplier/easier option over all.

go for it i reckon.

cheers

Brad

If your willing to go to that far building your engine, then with the sums you've done, its probably worth it.

It's just that you could build a trouble free 600hp RB28 for alot less in Australia.

Let us know how you go,could be a very interesting car when finished.

Just calculated that 2,415,000 yen is $28,000+.

Do you still have to provide a replacement motor.

You also make no mention of what block they use.

HAHAH YOU GUYS ARE f**kED. Mate has RB30/25 running with an 10k bottom end. I thought that was out of this world. ASIF SPED 20k. Use RB30 bottom end, rb25 or 26 top, massive cams get out of it aroubd 15k all up and im sure you will be runing same if not more power, more responsive and have a whole bag of money in ya pocket to buy a really good ECU and even a set of NEW RIMS :DDDLD::P:DD:D Tomei = waste of $$$ Racepace is your friend!

You want me to run an rb30 out of a commodore as my bottom end ?

I do want an engine that can rev. Rev limit on these engines is, SAFELY 8500rpm. I dont like the response of rb25's, and i assume rb30's will be no different.

So what if i save 4.5k and am unhappy with my r34 gtr with a slow revving old arsed rb30 engine :P

Guest Mashrock

i can definatley see where your comming from.

i was going to get my gti-r done when it was time for a rebuild. but ended up going local..

i didnt really read your questions haha, but as i think you've found out they like you to supply a block.

i'd say go for it. the parts alone are worth a fair bit..

decent head work costs a pretty penny over here!

and then the build and etc..

and you know your going to get quality from tomei..

find out about the shipping tho and then dities etc. and see if it adds up

Once its done, I want to race you with my "slow revving old arsed rb30 engine"

and I'm sure your comeback will be ok at the track which Im sure Sydneykid can supply you with another slow revving old arsed rb30 engine powered car there aswell

please think before you type stuff like that as just because its not right for your car doesn't mean others don't like it

why lower yourself to someone elses level with a reply like that?

I no speak-a de engrish...

why bother with rb30 bottom end... i know this guy who owns a 33 gtr in brissy cleveland area .. his spent a fortune on rb30 bottom end and 26 top n1 turbos etc.. doesnt make much more then 321kw @ all 4 wheels .. mind u his internals are all rebuilt forgies etc.. 260 cams the lot.. @ 321kw @ all 4 wheels he did blow his engine up.. only running 1.2bar.. i think japenese do know how to build engines.. same theory with 1JZ top and 2jz bottom end its all just trial and error.. if u got the money go for the tomei engine.. i think im lucky mine already came with hks bottom end :woot:

Sorry to offend you Brett,

Point is, Im after a stroker kit (or engine) for the 34. Im not after a hybrid rb30/26.

I have nothing against the rb30's, but i dont believe they suit my purpose.

While my reply seems "childish" you may have noted that i was replying to "ASIF SPED 20k", so I thought I would drop my level of simplicity (in terms of public speaking) down a notch or ten. You know well this is not an attack on you or any of the other rb30/26 hybrids (maybe just a shit stir).

At the end of the day, my reason for doing something like this is to have a car that will last. I want an engine built by a professional engine builder, and can justify spending 20k on the motor.

Out of curiosity, what do the rb30/26's rev to ?

:woot:
