Hey - someone put me onto this so I'll quickly answer.

The R34 boxes (getrag) are damn tuff as far as holding power goes. The main gears themselves are nice and strong.

What they suck at is the size of the locator teeth (don't know the real term) that you find between the gears and the shift drums.

If you are really unknind to the Getrags on the downshifts if you are doing track work then those tiny teeth break quite easily. Then you will not be able to get into that gear above 3,00rpm (its like killing a suynchro) I busted them twice in 6 months before learning to be nicer. Now that I know how to treat it propperly I haven't had an issue.

For reference both mine and troys cars are probably around 650HP. But I busted the gearboxes back when my car was about 450HP.

Also - as far as the boxes being the same as the Supra - yes the gears are the same but I think the input shafts are a different size. (I fixed my gearbox with Supra parts as Nissan don't sell them)

Cheers

reading this makes me feel so much better!!

have some love (L)

I ordered my Tomei 2.8 kit today.Dont have the funds to buy a complete Tomei built motor.I got the kit for $5950 which is a good price, the kit with the cooling channel in the pistons was $1200 more.

Getting my clutch rebuilt by Jim Berry, better start saving for an OS box I suppose.

Where are u getting the kit from??

What's included in the kit???

Billet crank,H beam rods with ARP bolts, forged pistons, rings.

I'm getting it through a shop in Melbourne. He is doing a great deal for me cause of all the business I've done with him.Not sure he wants me to post up his details,it may be a one off deal.I'll check with him tomorrow.Pretty sure he wants to be a sponsor, not that easy on SAU,he rips Nenguns prices. He can also get me Tomei H beam rods for $1490.

And I dont have to pay up front as he is a legitimate business,he doesnt use my money to buy the parts.

In regards to piston size,I'll let him know tomorrow. The motor is still being pulled apart.I wanted to avoid going this far as I was under the impression the motor had forged pistons.I was a bit shocked when I found out it had stock pistons, stock rods and crank and stock head gasket. It made 370rwkw at 1.5bar.I over revved it with a less than full sump, bearings in the sump.

I suppose at that power level and boost the motor would have let go sooner or later.HKS 2530's now for sale.LOL.

Tomei do not do a billet stroker crank...

Yeh,Iwas pretty sure they only did counterweight cranks with there stroker kits. His email to me says billet.I'll confirm with him tomorrow.Either way I'm getting the kit.

The Tomei RB28 kit comes with a forged semi counter crank that comes from the sae factory as the OEM Nissan one.

lots of unknown but in the rb28 dyno thread i have listed what i know about.

i need to get some split dumps, and i should be sorted.

will even do a test to see how much better they are.

comming soon!

just throw it on the dyno already! costs $50 and can tell us what a set of unknow internals, together with unknown cams and unknown turbos can do! lol. We've been hearing about the 580ps for over a year i for one am dying to see what this beast can do. :D

I posted the first 10 pages of 160 from the RB26DETT rebuild guide by nismo/tomei in my gallery..

There is a full on section in the back showing every step from when tomei receive your engine to when you get it back.. There is alot of steps and pages

Will take me along time to post it all so ill do in sections

Also the only mention of a tomei 2.8l is the kit, not the engine i dont think

But there is pages of stuff on the Tomei derive/genesis and how to tune with reytek, how to install poncams and camgears & Nismo's S1/R1 Engines

Plus a massive parts catalogue in the back with alot of stuff ive never seen on nengun/greenline or other parts places such as all the mines kits/tomei kits etc

yep it's the same book i have. the rebuild stuff is good, but the parts catalogue in the back is a bit out of date. i bought it whilst in japan back in jan 2004 and i think it was by no means a new release even then. awesome book though.

    • Have you put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on and verified your oil pressure?   Noise being on the block, on exhaust side, how high up the block does it seem to be? It could be the VCT system getting cranky, especially if it's mainly at idle, and when warm, as that'll be your lowest point for oil pressure. Could be showing that oil passages / VCT solenoid are blocking.
    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
