Yeah it does look greyscale. Must be time to wash :D

Just rip them off, use paint stripper to clean off the old paint then wax and grease remover to prep the surface. Use the ground coat, thin layers until a smooth finish, then apply the colour. 2 light coats (dry looking) to get the smooth colour base down 10 min apart then a final semi wet coat (so it looks glossy) and allow to dry.

I suck at paint and even managed to make it look ok so it should be a breeze for everyone else.

Guys I removed the spark plug cover but there doesn't appear to be any fasteners holding the decal/NISSAN TWIN CAM blah on. Is it just glued??

@GTRGeoff - firstly, great looking job! Secondly, does the metalcast more closely match the pic of the cam gear cover or the pic of the engine fitted? I love the colour of the cover but the fitted pic seems to have a slight orange tint. Which Duplicolor is that please?

Mark

Mark, thanks for the compliment. Double sided tape for the decal, so it's a real pain to remove. The colour is Metalcast Red anodize, so it is more a metallic cherry red than orange.

Thanks for the reply Geoff. Oh goody, I love double sided tape :O

Great news about the colour - full steam ahead then. I was originally planning on painting the engine the factory satin black but your paintjob just looks too damn good!

Calipers will be the test bed :O

I just had my Greddy plenum and Rocker covers powder coated. Cost me a whole $70 and that was including the sandblasting etc. For the cost i can't complain. I will post up some pics when i get a chance. Went with black for the plenum, but with a ripple finish. The cam covers i got done in a gold colour.

okay, So after much debating about what color to go, I purchased some metalcast blue.. I've included some photos of my progress..

I apologise for the size of the images, thus why i'm linking to them..

I'm happy with the way the rocker covers turned out.. apart from the cambelt cover, the silver ground coat I applied looked very very attractive.. the blue that I put on was bubbling, so the cambelt cover has lots of bubbles on it.. damn faulty cans..

cambelt cover sandblasted.. doesnt it look pretty?

cam cover with the groundcoat on it.. love the color.

rocker cover painted with the groundcoat

rocker cover close up.. love the finish of it..

cambelt cover and right rocker cover finished.. front on

cambelt cover and right rocker cover painted right side

Hi dude, the paintjob came up nicely! That ground coat looks a lot darker than mine did.

By the way, I found the same thing with the cans causing paint to bubble. If you continue to shake the can every few minutes plus you make sure you press the button all the way down, it works very nicely.

I was pretty dissapointed with the bubbling.. but I've worked it out, where the bubbling is, you're not going to see unless the motor is out, so i'm just going to leave it..

Trying to figure out what to do with the coil pack cover.. wether to paint that blue, also or leave it black or paint it silver...

I know where the nissan logo/twin cam 24v is i'm going to cut out and mesh it, so there's some air that gets in/out of there..

When powder coating the plenum and rocker covers, do you guys care if the inside/underside also gets powdercoated? seems to me that you want to avoid places like where the injector sits in and such

any suggestions on places that shouldnt get coated?

The place that powdercoated my greddy plenum masked everything with out me giving them any specific instructions, i just gave it to them and it came back perfect. All the injector holes, the facing where the throttle body bolts up, the block facing, and all the other small bits on the underside were all masked. I still can't get over how cheap it was to get done too.

leigh.

It cost me $70 all up for both the plenum and the rockercovers, that was including the sandblasting and the rest of the prep work.

You won't be able to sandblast the plastic centre part. I purchased a $5 can of acrylic spray paint and it turned out perfect. I also cut out the 24v raised section in the centre and filled it over with fibre glass.

check out the pics on the previous page or follow the link in my sig.
