Hi Guys,

I've posted a few threads over the past months asking i guess annoying questions. Well, here is another. Where do you guys mount/locate/whatever turbo timers, gauges, electronic displays etc?

Basically, i really like the look of the HKS type 1 turbo timer. I want it. And i want to be able to see it when im driving. But i am very worried about a copper or RTA defecting me for it and then having to go blue slip and basically being royally f**ked. I see pics of you guys with things on the dash, pillar etc and i know its illegal. Basically i dont want to get caught for obvious stuff. What are my options?

I was thinking, and this is just a thought, that perhaps i could remove the double din audio system, replace it with a single din HU and in the din below it, put the turbo timer there somehow... with some sort of face plate covering it for when i need it to be not seen. Is that doable?

My only other option i can think of to keep a low profile is get one of those small apexi ones and have it under the dash/steering column.. but i like the HKS.

i put mine on the spacer between the steering wheel i have it set on speedo because mine is out by 10k but ive never had any problems id just tell them its a information unit like a RSM, and also it flicks over (to timer mode) when you switch the keys off. the HKS ones are good i wanted one of those the TYPE 1 but there pretty enpensive so i have got the greddy fully auto timer, practicly the same but the HKS takes out the speed limiter the reason i liked it but when i get my power fc that will do it for me!!

cheers simon

My Profec is on the steering wheel column and my SAFC is right in the middle of my dash facing toward me (above the middle aircon vents).

No way is it stealthy but it looks nice :)

Want to be able to see it because it does more than just act as a turbo timer.

Thats an idea on the steering wheel column and tell them its an information display for speedo... that legal? Good idea!! I might just do that.

Whats this about the HKS disabling the speed limiter??

i have my turbo timer under my steering wheel column and my boost controller on top. it looks cool as it both lights up red

coppers pulled me ova and didnt say anything cause i set my turbo timer to read batt vaults and boost controller set on something else

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Just make sure i learn the quick key combo to disable turbo timer function so car turns off straight away if i get pulled over.

Edit:

Actually can you guys show me a photo of yours setup? Want to get exact ideas in my head so i can get a good idea before my car arrives!! :P

Ive got the same setup as r32_Gts4.

Just under ther steering colum, to the right side where the dash goes down and meets the tunnel for the gearbox.

A turbo timer is only illegal if you leave the car running and walk away from it whilst engine is running. I had a cop hassle me about it ages ago and i told him its used for when i take my car to the track, once i have done a few laps and come back to the pits i can let the car cool down.

I cant remember the exact law or phrase for lusing a turbo timer in public but you could try the RTA website or even go to your local police station and enquire!

    • @soviet_merlin Thanks mate!  Nothing too major but will hold me up for a while. I've got lymphomas to get taken off the back of my neck and the middle of my spine which always conjures scary thoughts!  It sounds worse than it is. Yeah great, conjuring more rabbit hole deepening , just what I need! 🤣
    • I'd argue the F50 kit I got is very good value. For ~2k I got the calipers (refurbed condition), adapters, pads, brake lines, rotors, and top hats. I think you'd be pretty hard to get Evo/GTR/350z brembos + the additional hardware for similar money. Used market for a pair of front calipers alone I've seen tend to run anywhere from $1500-2000 depending on condition.    That said, something like a GTR or 350z brembo is a lot easier to adapt to the Silvia.
    • Is there a significant price difference between the Evo/gtr/350z brembos vs the F50? Looks amazing.
    • I was actually being a tightarse at the time LOL... My OCD is tickling me into running a 2nd 8AN Teflon hose all the way down and removing the 2x OEM hardlines. My other side of my brain is telling me to run 2x hardlines front to back (also acts as a fuel cooler, so win win).
    • As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had some trouble with the Silvia's brakes dragging back in 2023. I managed to sort it out then, but the same problem came back to bite me late last year. Just take a look at the picture – I had a feeling the handbrake was acting up again, and I was right. Anyway, I'd been wanting to upgrade to bigger brakes for a while. Not that the Silvia's brakes were bad, but it was more of a "want" than a "need", you know? It was funny, though – at the time, I couldn't find any Evo Brembos, 350Z Brembos, or GTR Brembos for a decent price (of course, tons of them popped up online after I already bought my kit!). I ended up going with an F50 Brembo kit, which came with adapters, brake lines, 330mm rotors, and top hats. The F50 Brembo caliper was used in a few other cars too, like the FPV. I also decided this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the Silvia's ridiculous rear brakes and that awful handbrake (some of you were definitely right about that!). I picked up some R33 calipers and all the necessary bits – rear drums, backing plates, and new hardware to refurbish the calipers. Of course, it wouldn't be a project without a few hiccups. Turns out the brake master cylinder was playing up and basically (to put it simply) keeping the brakes engaged. I had it overhauled, and after some adjustments, everything was working again. The whole process took a while, as you can imagine. To top it off, the front right wheel bearings were shot and needed replacing too. This is a rare occasion where I'm posting an update while it's all still fresh! These pictures were taken just this afternoon.
