Hey players, I am thinking about upgrading my turbo (in my R32 GTS-t) before the doc comes and just wanted an opinion...

I don't want to spent too much and don't want much if any extra lag...

From what I know the r33 turbo gives better flow and is a cheap option (there are a few low k jobbies for sale for around $200). Can anyone tell me the expected benifits (added power) and will it withstand higher boost than the RB20 turbo (I am currently running aroung 13-14)...

OR, can you reccomend another turbo that would be a better option and around the same price range?

I know it will be best to get something serious but that wont happen before it gets tuned so I figue if I get something for about $200-$300 and can gain another 10-20 because of it then it will be worthwhile.

For those of you who don't know my other engine mods are...

3" Turbo Back Exhaust

POD Air Filter (cold air intake)

Front Mount Intercooler

Gizzmo Electronic Boost Controller (13-14psi)

Bosch 040 Fuel Pump

I hope to get a Z32 AFM before the tune but don't know about that!!!

Thanks!

Todd

i have recently gone to a rb25 turbo on my car and have noticed a huge difference. I gota bit more lag but up top is just awsome, i run 10PSI and it pulls all the way through the revs and is much better than the rb20. Only problem was i didnt get the turbo elbow so mine is still a bit restrictive and needs a tune. I say go for it :) and its just bolt off and on too

Thanks mate... which bit is the turbo elbow? (turbo to filter??) and why does it differ from the rb20 turbo??

Did you get new gaskets? Why did you change it? (just for upgrade or did you have a stuffed turbo?)

Thanks! Todd

The turbo elbow is the part that heads back towards the intercooler, the rb20 one has a slightly smaller hole.

Mine pulls a bit harder through the revs too, im running around 12psi, but the only other mod i have is an apexi pod filter, and its auto so its quite restrictive.

Wind the boost up to 13-14psi ronald, you might as well its not gonna hurt the turbo.

An R33 RB25 turbo with replacment steel turbine wheel - 3", intercooler, ecu ect it would be good for 200ishkWs 16-18psi depending on tune. Thats a similae set up to most of the GTSts on the track.

If your after budget new why not consider a KKR - 210kW at the wheels with 11.5psi. You'd buy on new for early $800s.

Thanks Stu, is something to consider but was trying to avoud spending over the 500 mark... looks like I will be wasting my money if I dont!

I ended up getting 135rwkw after my tune on 13psi. (POD, FMIC, 3" Ex)

I just have to get a new turbo and fit everything (GTR Injectors, z32 AFM, High-mount manifold and screamer pipe) and I will take a trip to Vic to visit Sam for a retune! Can't wait but if I am forking out $800 for the turbo I will be waiting a little longer!

Anyone want to buy a go-kart? ;)

Yeah with everything else you have on the car its almost a waste not to wait and get a good turbo.

I would personally go for a rebuilt RB25 turbo, its a proven product and unlike the KKR is a very simple fit.

Providing whoever you source it from knows what they are doing you will not suffer much lag either.

Eitherway, going from 135 to 200 will be an un-real feeling... for atleast a few weeks until you want more again!

yeah, can't wait!! I was a little dissapointed with 135 but really isn't too bad on 13psi (plus the fuel ratios are are on the knocker now and I gained about 20kw throughout the rev range!) but I am running 14-15psi now ;) but hey, I am getting a new turbo :O

How much should I expect to find an R33 turbo with steel wheels for?

I tried running 14Psi of boost at the drag day, but my car doesnt like it and hits the limiter lol. Once thats taken care of with a tune, i might bump it up a bit more

Obviously your computer still has a boost cut then, i would suggest not to run anymore than 13psi through a ceramic wheeled turbo....

i still have the speed cut too :)

looks like you should have had your car tuned when dr drift came down.

I believe you can send him your ECU and he will remap it without tuning it... will be alot better but not as good as a full dyno tune. Plus it removes boost and speed cut... (and rev limiter if you so wish but not reccomended!)

My Air Fuel ratios are spot on now too and am getting a lot more k's for my $$ - will pay for itself in the end!
