Thought I may as well post it here since its a skyline and I cant find anyone who knows how to get this sound. I assume its turbo flutter due to no BOV. The car runs a T04Z. This is not a flutter thread so dont attack me on this one please, I know there have been 1000s of threads regarding flutter. All I want to know is how to get this specific sound on lifting the throttle cause I like its high pitch aggressiveness. Anyone care to share or if your car sounds like this what turbo are you running, are you running AFM, etc.

Cheers

I KEEP TELLING EVERYONE! ITS THE HKS RACING TYPE II BOV!

Around $450 delivered to Australia from greenline, perfectrun or nengun.

And beware the imitation ones for sale on eBay. Get the genuine thing.

And another thing, you have to run at least 1 bar of boost for it to blow off.

Hope I helped.

it sounds like a no bov system and a big single open mouthed

one of the rajab vls' sounds the same and its probably the same setup.

ditto with the PANNIC vl turbo. no bov, open mouted turbo and airflow meter upstream or map sensor so you can basically hear the compressor wheel surge as its straight into the atmosphere.

god help that poor compressor wheel :D

It does that because of the whole car setup, not just the BOV. It's a combination of the intercooler, piping, turbo, etc etc. And the fact that the HKS Racing Type II BOV is a single stage valve, and only operates under high boost levels. Hence, you get a lot of 'reverberation' through the intercooler and piping.

If you run this BOV on a relatively stock motor, it will sound much like a HKS SSQV. And similarly, if you get a HKS SSQV BOV on a setup with large intercooler and piping, you can get it to flutter.

Fluttering is caused by the pressure finding it easier to escape in places other than the BOV. You have to remember that the outlet for the BOV is only small, and filters and intercoolers provide a LOT of free room when you're blowing off.

As for the whistling sound, that's just how the HKS sounds. So if you want that fluttering whistle, get either HKS SSQV / HKS Racing Type II.

I recommend the SSQV for people running under 15psi, and the Racing Type II for people running over 15psi.

  • 1 month later...

Flutter like that of a VL turbo is not achieved with a blowoff valve kids, nor is it with the turbo intake open directly to the atmosphere... On my VL I have moved the AFM into the cooler pipes, and on the front of the turbo have fitted a 15cm long piece of 2.5" intercoolre piping with filter and mesh held over the end with a hose clamp. That is what makes the distinctive fluttering surge sound you hear VL's dropping here and there. Enjoy.
