There is countless posts on this forum where people have felt they are victimised for being a car enthusiast. There is many sides to the story and different attitutues.

I think we should all start working together, in a group effort to raise awareness to this treatment and to wake the police force up.

I have no problem with the defect system that the police have, I just dont like the way its used. Rust buckets and other dangerous cars continue to move around our streets with out interuption, however many of us with very tidy and legal cars fear taking them out.

There is two sides of the coin, we need to ensure that everyone knows what the laws are. If you have been defected you either knew your mod was illigal or you didnt know.. simple. So we should be working on a way to get the infomation to the people.

Once everyone is armed with knowledge we can easily fight the police, beat them at their own game. If they pull us over and say its a defect and its not then we can tell them so..

Its time to send letters to the governing bodies, its time to speak to the police and maybe even work with them. We need to show them how we are not all hoons and then need to show us how they have agendas other than revenue rasing.

So who is with me, who has suggestions on what to do. Who has contacts in magazines, and news papers. Please post it all here and we can work together. Other wise this post will fall to the depths of the forums with all the other threads about us getting victimised.

I'm actually looking at going halves with my mum (Driving Instructor) to get a CDROM full of all the ADR information.

I think its like $28 or something for a one off copy.

Knowledge is the only way to beat the system, if you know it better then they do then you'll win everytime.

I am with you...

They can take our BOV's but they will never take....

OUR FREEDOM!!! lol

I agree that if we get the correct information across to them, and recieve the same things will be alot better. Its all about understanding. I dont think a decent exhaust should be defected when a harley rides by with one twice as loud uneffected... There are soooo many cases of double standards, these need to be sotred for once.

Yeah the ADR's are also available on www.ajc13b.com (i think its .com). the problem is that its alot of documentation, we should get people to summarise parts of it so its easy to reference if you have to..

I would love to get a Car Enthusiasts guide to defects published, I think if everyone had one in their car the police would have a more educated "customer" base.

Yeah thats just it, I own a skyline and everytime I speak to someone I learn a few new things about them or a different modification. So I dont see how the police know what they are looking at because they are not mechanics..

does anyone know what kind of training they need to be able to give out a defect??

Its also a matter for us to keep calm if it did happen, if they saw us all pull out the monacles and our legal documentation and stay calm and talk them through it all they should respect that and hopefully behave.

There is a guy in the gong who has a old school celica with a 13b turbo in it, he was driving along and the police pulled him over. The cop gave him heaps until he pulled out the engineers certificate, then the attitute changed. The police officer was fantastic.

If only it was like this all the time!

I think we need definate clarification of the law.

If we can get a contact (high up) in the RTA or the Government body that handles the RTA then we should write to them.

ie. ask them in writing which law a pod filter breaks, which law a bleed valve breaks, what our rights are when we are pulled over and treated harshly with regard to incorrect defects, rights to reimbursement if it's found that there was no defect at all etc....

The way things are going in some States (we're luck here in ACT, the police are good), getting an engineers certificate will be common practice for simple mods, and even then it won't promise that you won't get a defect :D

I have the exhaust sound testing ADR method printed out and in my car... I have generally been ok with the cops, but I've only had my car for like a month :)

Ed where did you get that from? Could you send it to me or post up the URL address you got it from?

Thanks....

I should be getting a *.pdf copy of all relevant ADR's from Steve (ajc13b) shortly .....

After this I will be compiling them into one complete large *.pdf which will be the "complete" guide, and also a "cutdown guide". The complete will obviously have each ADR in it's entirety, the cutdown will only have the relevant sections on testing.

The cutdown can be used for those pesky pulled over on the side of a street times, and if needed the complete can be produced for further reading material .....

Each will have a contents so you know exactly where to find the information you need quick and easy .....

This is the plan anyway :)

Steve's website has most of the stuff you will need to beat bullshit defects, guys. It not only has the ADRs but also sections of the relevant RTA guildelines to print out and keep in the glovebox. These bits of info outline what is actually a defect, and you can use this to challenge anything they issue which does not fit the description of a defect.

www.ajc.13b.com Go to the Law section.

Get printin' boys and girls!

Croatian - It shouldn't be hard to get an engineer's cert. at all. Providing your car is all legal and meets all the requirements, then you should have no troubles. As Carlo said, check the RTA website, they have a bunch of them listed there.

It shouldn't be too expensive (admittedly I don't know how much they cost), but hypothetically speaking, even if it was, say $500.00, wouldn't it be worth the money, for the piece of mind of knowing your car is all legal? This isn't directed at anyone in particular, but it strikes me as pretty hilarious that a group of people such as ourselves think nothing of spending quite hefty sums of money modifying our cars to make them faster/better/whatever, yet it seems that so many freak out over the imagined cost of getting the mods engineered.

And for those who've heard stories of people with engineer's certificates getting pulled over and told their certificates don't mean dick, remember, just because an officer tells you that doesn't mean it's true. You just have to know when to stand your ground and how to go about it.

    • Among other things yes. Making sure to either use an oil pressure regulator or the right restrictor size for your oil pump/range of oil viscosities you intend to run, making sure you plumb the lines correctly, turbo should be placed such that it siphons properly even when the water pump isn't turning so you don't boil coolant in the turbo after shutdown, oil return should be low resistance and also preferably picking the one that is most likely to return to the pickup as opposed to some other irrelevant part of the pan. It's far from impossible to figure this out but I have seen people really, really struggle and if that's the case it's easier to just take the path of least resistance. To me, bolt-on twin turbos are a fixed cost whereas single turbo is almost unbounded.
    • Latest round of updates on the car. I purchased and installed a SWS clutch slipper to help with 60ft times and got some second-hand good condition 275/40R17 Hoosier DR2 radials. Test and tune in November showed the tyres were an upgrade over my over 15 year old mickey Thompson's and I got a 1.8 second 60ft and pb et of 11.71 but even then, that run wasn't great due to rain and driver error (the event got called off 10 minutes later fast forward to the weekend just gone 25th of Jan and there was finally a break in the weather to let racing happen. The first run the track was slippery and only managed a 12.1@129 Second run the track was better and got a new pb et and mph: 11.54@131   Lith and I then worked out that I installed the previously mentioned clutch slipper incorrectly and its never been working, and I had just been dumping the clutch the entire time, we also noticed it was on street boost and not race boost. So I lined up for a third run with the car turned up in the first two gears, but the passengers side axle objected to clutch dumps and left the chat which stopped my weekend.   so there will be another attempt in the future once I replace the tyres as they rubbed and are stuffed now. but a low 11 should be on the cards.
    • Ceramic coating and heat shielding, you mean?
    • Turbos don't require pulling the motor apart so that's "easier". I would recommend the Nismo R3 turbos instead if you want to do stock twin turbo. It doesn't make as much power as the 2530s but it's only like ~50 whp off the mark and should have better response (ball bearing CHRA, slightly smaller turbo). A local that went with a Garrett G30 and 6boost manifold recently nearly burned his car to the ground after the hood insulator started melting and and burning so if you go single turbo I recommend doing a lot of research and validation work to make sure you don't do the same.
