At the moment im 16, and I have convinced my parents to buy me a S13 Silvia for my 17th birthday. We will get the latest model we can afford, but it must have an SR20DET and be manual (naturally). What sort of price do you guys think S13s like this will be worht in just over a year? Yes, I can drive well, and I will eventually come up with the money for what i want to do. My dad is a mechanic and we have our own small workshop, and ive been working on cars since i was 5, well as much as you can do at 5 anyway. (Just giving you a bit of background)

So, I pretty sure the first model with the SR is the '91. Is this right? To start off with I will fix up the body, we were thinking Trial or Nismo (can u still get them?) bodykit with a gloss white respray. Next would be 17" rims, not chrome tho. Eventually we will go for a twin vented carbon hood and Ganador-style carbon mirrors or similar.

Then we are going to do a simple intake and exhaust upgrade. My dad wants to stick the pod filter out of one of the front bar vents >_< We want to go for a 3" cat back system that makes a deep burbling noise. Until I have fixed up the interior thats all for the engine, besides by this time I will still be on my Ps (18-19) and dont wont too much power, just incase. I want to keep this car for at least 8 years, probably longer. Eventually we want it to make around 200rwkw but we also dont want to have to go internal, like new conrods/pistons/cams or vavle train. What sort of completly safe, reliable power are the stock internals good for?

For the interior we just want to go with brand name reclinable buckets, a boost gauge, and a consistent colouring for the dash. I have seen some examples where the dash is an off grey colour, but these where all pre '91, why is this? As far as audio goes, it will be a quality system using (hopefully) all pioneer gear. Only want Splits for the front, 6s for the rear and one 12" sub in the boot.

Then it will be just how I want it (hopefully). So what I came here to ask is...

How much will all of this cost. Dont include labour because my dad and I will do all of it. Plus one of my mates is an electrician, another is an apprentice engineer, and one works for BMW. BTW, I'm in Tassie and, although my dad knows most of the workshops around, does anyone know of any good places for parts and thigns like that. We want to stick to bolt on or near to it, I think Autobarn will be the go. I am going to try and get a part time job there anyway.

thats like giving a list of things you want to have in a new house ure getting built and just walking up to someone ans saying how much............

you cant even get a rough price like that. If you are really intersted in knowing how much its going to cost you then you should take a list to relevant work shops and do it that way. its the only way to get an accurate price.

Have you considered a Silvia forum of some sort? Or would you ask your automotive mechanic father for advice on repairing light aircraft?

I know that people have made well over 200rwkW on standard S15 internals. An S13 will have around 5-10 years more age on it though, and other differences (like the VCT head) that assist in making power. I know of a few S13s making around 200rwkW, but I'm not sure how much the engine itself was modified.

The T25 on the S13 SR20's won't cut the mustard for 200rwkW though. Neither will the stock cams. I don't know if you'll have to go to solid lifters either.

H0llakaust: It all depends if you want new or used parts. If you get Japanese new parts, budget $5,000 to $7,000? You could knock $$$$ off that if you buy shit Chinese stuff, or even more if you shop on Ebay/Yahoo...

I think you should take one mod at a time and ask more Q's then.

SR20DET internals will take 200+kw fairly easily.

To make it out of a red-top engine like in the series 2 S13's youre probably looking at-

Larger MAF, decent intercooler, larger injectors, high pressure fuel pump, better water pump, pod filter, upgraded BOV, a T28 ball bearing turbo (either out of a S15 jap-200SX , Garratt or HKS all make that), stage 1 cams- the Tomei or HKS seem to be popular, maybe solid lifters in the head, slightly larger exhaust manifold and a custom plenum wont hurt either and the obligatory 3" exhaust system.

(Theres also a whole heap of other things like cooler sparkplugs, improved coil packs and the fact you will have to get a new ECU and boost controller which are quite expensive)

Being 200kw, you will need to stop, so that often involves sourcing brakes off an R32GTR or other car which will mate up with the hubs on all four corners, the 5spd gearbox and RS200 diff are both tough bastards but you will need a heavier clamp clutch to actually put the power down.

Alls said and done, its a lot easier to make 200kw out of the black-top engines with VVT in the S14 and S15 series cars, the S14, while it is a bit heavier is a much easier car to live with in terms of handling.

This is big money. If your serious about making a track/drift car then expect to be sinking a lot into it either way, you can use cheap parts and they may work forever, more likely, they wont and your engine will shat itself covering your nice white paint and windscreen through those fancy back-facing vents in the CF bonnet in oil and radiator fluid when you really least needed to do it.

It will in no way pass an emission test and will be defected quicker than you can dump the clutch and send it sideways into a gutter.

If its just going to be a daily driver, make it look pretty as you want but running a 200kw silvia every day will quickly add up in big fuel bills, parts and it will need regular servicing every 4500-5000km, add to the fact if youre anything like I was on my P's many, many years ago, you'll have NFI what youre doing in a car and probably destroy it and yourself in the process of learning.

2L turbo silvias are a fairly forgiving beast in handling, which you havent touched on at all, you can throw 4grand at suspension, tyres and rims and still have a poor handling road car if you dont know what youre doing there.

Virtually no one will insure you.

Not crapping on dreams, but reality has an odd way of poking its way in a lot quicker than you can imagine.

Shop around and you might find an S13 with a lot of that stuff already done to it, such as audio upgrades, engine power ups, bodykits, rims etc. It might not be EXACTLY how you want it, but you'll save heaps if a previous owner has done it for you.

EDIT: Also, 200rwkw at 17 years old is asking for trouble, whether it be traffic infringements, defects, accident, injury, or worse...

an s13 wont cost much to get to 200rwkw.

and the newer sr20det engines found in s14's and s15's have VCT not VVT.

for turbo choice i wouldnt got a t28 from the s14's or s15s (theyre the same..depending on if the cars jdm or adm..well s15 turbo's have a slight change with a divider in the wastegate >_<) anyway t28's will be good for only 180ish or 190rwkw. get a turbo depending on ur application....injectors will also need upgrading as will AFM. forget cat back and go a turbo back with a good intercooler. exhaust/cooler/turbo/boost/intercooler/injectors/afm/power fc + tune/ will get u there . obviously u'd want to do brakes etc.

Well mate incase your still interested, your goal of 200rwkw is quite achievable. For example my S13 Sil80. I'm using a redtop SR20DET....mods are:

GT2871R turbo on lowmount stainless manifold

(Still using internal wastegate but will be welding this up and using an external gate, have had probs with boost creep at higher levels)

Sard 800cc injectors

Sard Fuel Rail

BOSCH Fuel Pump

Wolf 3D ecu

HKS Stage 1 Cams (not fitted yet though)

Plus lots of other shit such as oil cooler, pod filter, descent front mount cooler blah blah blah

ATM i'm making just over 200rwkw (can't remember exact figure) but this is only on just 1 bar boost and cams not fitted plus more tuning to be done. I estimate that once the cams are fitted, boost is raised and the tuning carefully carried out 250rwkw is not going to be too far off. This is as far as I'm going to push the standard internals. ATM I've had not problems at the current power level. The secrect with making power is all in the support systems and tuning. Mind you 250kw is really at the limit but keep revs down and temps down and octane (tuning) up and you'll be fine with what your chasing. I might also mention that at the 200kw its making atm traction is already an issue (depending on what you want the car for this may not be a problem :dry: ), but 1st gear just lights up the rears all the way though second on wot. On the high way with even a slightly damp road 4th gear rolling along to wot with do the same thing (an no I don't have shit rear tyres). Just something to keep in mind.

siddr20: As for the defect with the poddie sticking out of the front bar, where I live in Tassie the only people who get defects are people who drive cars which fall apart on the road, like old landcruisers :yes:

Big Rizza: I had thought about buying one already tuned but then it will 1) not be done the way we want to do it, 2) Probably have to much power for me to handle/need at 17/18.

MK2: The car is not planned for track/drift work, the amount of money i would need to be able to do any competition level motorsport is mad, and drifting on the street is a bit dangerous for my liking, especially when my car that im killing is the most expensive thing i have ;) Then again, by the time it had 200rwkw I should have that sorta money, cos your right, its a looong way off and a biiig dream, at least for now.

scathing: Yer, I would ask my dad about repairing a light aircraft, then he would tell me to f**k off and stop being a dickhead.

But anyway, My area has recently been bombarded with S13s with all sorts of rice :) So now we are looking more towards the higher Toyota's, like GT-4As and MR2s, which are pretty unseen in north Tassie.
