Generally once a topic has gone off the rails, it's hard to get it under control.

Even if the 'bad posts' were removed from the thread, someone would re-kindle the flame.

In a way it is unfair, because everyone is bound by the same guidelines.

The fact that there are some people who like to push the limits of those guidelines means that sometimes moderators have to be heavy handed make themselves appear to be nazi's in order to keep the peace.
