I attended the Powercruise for the second time this weekend and was glad to see that there were a lot more Skylines competing this year than last year.

I wanted to enter my R34GTT this year but as usual the joys of modifying and upgrading an already good car meant that my car was still stuck in the workshop and I couldn't enter it this year, so it will have to wait till next year.

Anyway what I can not understand about Powercruise is how unfair this year’s street racing drags event was and how the promoters of Powercruise let it pass. For those who were not there, a quick run down of the happenings was there was a good line up of cars, even a Toyota Hiace van was surprising everyone. The cars were matched up well having V8 against V8 and Skylines against Skylines. It was what I considered very entertaining and fair event up until the final run between a LX Torana Hatch and a Autostyle R32 GTR. During the elimination stages you could see that both these cars were awesome and it was almost predictable that they would be the final two. On the final run between these two cars, the Torana jumped the GTR at the start line. The event commentator even made a comment on the desperate actions of the Torana driver.

When a Skyline jumped the line at last year event, it got disqualified and it was not even at the final run but this year when a V8 jumps a Skyline at the final run they let it pass.

I was looking forward to the final run as I have heard a quite a bit about GTRs from Autostyle being awesome cars and my money was on the GTR beating the Torana hands down, but instead I was greatly disappointed to learn that if you are V8 driver at Powercruise you can cheat and jump the line and get away with it but if you a Skyline driver you will get disqualified. Clearly I think the Skylines made their mark at the street drag event with how many Skylines made it to the final 10 cars but how can you prove to V8 drivers that Skylines are a better car if the organisers are biased in the way they run the event?

If you were there for the conversation after the race, (which you obviously weren't), you'd know that Mick Voase in the white Torana suggested a re-match as soon as a disagreement between the promoter and Dom from Autostyle began.

The rules for the street racing were first car to the line causes the flag to be dropped and the race to start. Dom started rolling then got off it to depress the clutch and bring the revs up. He slowed and Mick didn't as he was still on the accelerator. In fact, Mick said later that he had to tap the brakes in an effort to make it fairer even though it appeared to him that the White Skyline had backed off.

The Torana won and would have won again and again and again. Sad but true mate. I was taking photos on the start line, sitting between both cars and had been talking to both drivers immediately before hand.

Powercruise is not anti-skyline. Lots of their entrants are including the 50 or so 'Thirlmere Fryers' heckling Dom as he made a song and dance about the whole thing.

Racing's racing. End of story.

Honestly I felt right at home all weekend, nothing but encouragement and kind words from everyone, I did notice though that a lot of people were very keen for even me to beat Autostyle even though it was import Vs import ... maybe it has something to do with what attitude you have towards them aswell?

Your theory that the Torana guy wanted to rematch doesn’t make sense. Why would he want a rematch if he felt he won!!! What I heard, from speaking to one of the staff officials who was there was that the GTR guy wanted a rematch but the Torana guy said he wouldn’t do a rematch because he needed petrol, which both the staff official I thought would that was the lamest excuse ever heard not to be able to do a rematch. Although you a probably right that it is not Powercruise that is against Skyline but some of the entrants because the staff official I spoke did say that can you imagine how these guys would react if they did a rematch and the Skyline won.

Racing is racing but to me a win is only win if it is not disputed.

And when you think about it the Torana probably did run out of petrol or NOS unlike a the beauty of a twin turbo RB26 that didn’t.

They had 3 cars there on the day.. only 2 of them ran the drags.. other one ran into the wall *snicker*..

anyways..

I think in the end.. as buster said in the other thread we had it's street racing.. that's the way it goes, I doubt the skyline would have beat the torana.. maybe off a standing start.. but it was a good race anyways..

as for buster beating autostyle.. hell yeah.. we were gunning for you..

That you taking all the photos down there adrian..

Because he knew he could beat him and would've. He runs a tiny methanol tank in the the engine bay.

Ah...... thats why he wouldn't race him again because the tiny methanol tank would be empty after 3 runs.

Every one has there own opinion which is a better car, mine is a GTR any day and if yours is a Torana thats cool.

And just out of interest, the Torana doesn't run Nitrous, runs 8.80 Naturally Aspirated, is street registered AND just finished nearly 10 runs back to back.

Forget what you HEARD from some guy..... I was there. I loved the Skyline and think it was one of the toughest GTR's i've ever seen in person BUT it didn't win and wouldn't of won if there had been a rematch.

Get over it.

Read my above post you boofhead.

Duncan, just because it was at a circuit doesn't mean you're an expert. Go fly a kite! :O

Adrian

Didn't Autostyle have 2 cars what knocked out the black T88 powered R32 GTR with awesome wheels

I thought he would of at least got 3rd or 2nd :O

I beat him :)

One thing R34GTRMAN hasn't mentioned is that Dom in the White GTR got a bye run in the semi final which was his second bye run in 6 races all because he ran late and was last in line so if we're talking fair and not fair explain to me how the V8"s were favoured with this in mind :)

As I keep saying awesome awesome event I had the time of my life and next year if those that don't like how its run or don't think its fair don't enter :) simple really

Cannot comment on this one as I wasn't there but...

Previous posts have said that it is all good re Skyline vs V8's etc. This may be the case in the pits but I can say for sure it wasn't the case in the stands last year when Paul was racing the bucket thing.

I was wearing my SAU T-shirt and heard a lot of "'king cheating Skylines, those things are shit, you got smoked, Jap crap" etc etc from the lovely fans behind me.

I find it difficult to believe that the fans have changed so much in 12 months.

El Bee

ps. If you believe that it is not a "bogunfest" you are having yourself on. Have a look at your Powercruise T-shirt and tell me how many imports are on this year's one.

Im not saying Dom was robbed or any of that crap, but.....

Its funny how the rules change to suit the situation. As it stood last year the flag was the start signal, not the first car to the line. Guppy and his henchmen made sure i was eliminated before the final, by saying id jumped the start. Then the demanded i re-run the T-bucket, and held the flag up on the line in the re-run to ensure i rolled out too far, forcing me too get off the clutch and on the brake.....as soon as the starter saw this the flag was then dropped. Game over for the "cheating" skyline...cant comment on this years events as i was not there, but ill never enter my car in such an event again due to the nature of it. A very us vs them mentality.

P.S. ill post up the vid of last years debacle if enough people are interested.

BTW Bu5ter...youll get your chance to chop Autostyle....be patient my friend....all in good time.

rocked up sunday, [paid my $35.

powercruise and those sort of events are certainly an acquired taste, thats for sure

not bad

plenty of classy citizens around. especially the women. no wonder the tobacco industry is so rich

otherwise good racing

    • Very decent bit of kit. Definitely black it out I reckon.
    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want.
    • It's not, but it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity regardless. For example, what if the cylinder head was redesigned to fit a GDI fuel system? It's worth like two full points of compression ratio when looking at modern GDI turbo vs PFI turbo. I'm pretty reliably surprised at how much less turbo it takes to make similar power out of a modern engine vs something like an RB26. Something with roughly the same dimensions as a -7 on an S55 is making absolutely silly power numbers compared to an RB26. I know there's a ton of power loss from things like high tension rings, high viscosity oil, clutch fan, AWD standby loss, etc but it's something like 700 whp in an F80 M3 vs 400 whp in an R33 GTR. The stock TF035HL4W turbos in an F80 M3 are really rather dinky little things and that's enough to get 400 whp at 18 psi. This just seems unwise no? I thought the general approach is if you aren't knock limited the MFB50 should be held constant through the RPM range. So more timing with RPM, but less timing with more cylinder filling. A VE-based table should accordingly inverse the VE curve of the engine.
    • I've seen tunes from big name workshops with cars making in excess of 700kW and one thing that stood out to me, is that noone is bothering with torque management. Everyone is throwing in as much timing as the motor can take for a pull. Sure that yields pretty numbers on a dyno, but it's not keeping these motors together for more than a few squirts down the straight without blowing coolant or head gaskets. If tuners, paid a bit more attention and took timing out in the mid range, managed boost a bit better, you'll probably see less motors grenading. Not to name names, or anything like that, but I've seen a tune, from a pretty wild GT-R from a big name tuner and I was but perplexed on the amount of timing jammed into it. You would have expected a quite a bit less timing at peak torque versus near the limiter, but there was literally 3 degrees of difference. Sure you want to make as much as possible throughout the RPM range, but why? At the expense of blowing motors? Anyhow I think we've gone off topic enough once again lol.
    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
