you're talking about speedo binnacles i'm guessing. most likely reason is to sell it aftermarket.

So is it often and usual for the Japs to "strip" the car and just sell it stockish to the auction rather than selling it with all the goodies?

I bought my Skyline about 2yrs ago from a country town and I was told genuine K's. When I reached the 100k mark I noticed the speedo on the 100k had a scratch, as if it was put back to 90thousand k's when i bought it. I have no idea what the original ks are. Don't believe anyone get a good mechanic to overlook these things. For all I know my car could be 200K. However, it go's hard when Suburus are around.
