Sneaking Past The "turbo" Law

What I meant to say (I don't think you guys got the sarcasm) is that a N/A Skyline and a Turbo Skyline looks no different... and if you are a law abiding driver, GOES no different either!

Save your time, save your money and just be happy with a N/A Skyline for now... learn to drive the car then think about upgrading later on.

...or just save your money, buy something cheap, and then spend all the money you save on a better turbo skyline when you are actually allowed to drive it.

I can see now buying a turbo will just give me too many issues.. so what about the blow out valve i've learnt.. thanks for telling me otherwise.. appreciate it. Keen on r32 GTS now :P

I'm 16 going into 17 in september and like most of you, I love the woosh noise and need a turbo, i assure you it's not an excuse to look cool and race people..

I've found a solution that allows me to drive a turbo'd car without flaws..

You're going to need to explain to me why you "need" a turbo, and how your "love of the woosh noise" (as opposed to its performance and economy benefits) doesn't count as an excuse to look cool.......

As for the meat of your post, I'm a little dubious (as if that's surprising given how hare-brained everything else you've posted on this topic is).

Unless you're driving to and from Canberra every day, technically your place of residence (i.e. the place you're living most of the time) is in NSW. You'd only be living, at most, 2 days a week in the ACT. If you get caught, you'll get busted for not transferring your license to your home state. So registering a car in another state while living up here is no less illegal than having a NSW Provisional license and driving a turbo car. You're less likely to get caught, but that's not the impression you're giving from your first post.

If you rego your car with ACT plates it'll be even more obvious. If you rego it under someone else's name with NSW plates and whack your P's on then you'll still attract attention from the cops who will see a NSW registered "woosh" car with P plates, and pull you over to investigate. If they see you around a bit then they'll book you. I know someone from another forum who moved over from WA and didn't transfer his rego. When the cops pulled him over they called WA, ran through the databases, and found out that he hadn't lived there for over 3 months and booked him.

I never said iwas going to do the above? it was a posability and a solution to people that actually want to go that far.. After all the replies i got i've figured the "woosh" isnt worth the risk.. hence why i think it'd be better to learn on a slow car before i get myself killed.. kthx

An N/A skyline is heaps better than what most of us here have had as a first car. Mine was a nissan pulsar vector, and I managed to blow the AT transmission in it, which cost me a grand to fix up.

Being young, you don't always realise the wear you do to a car when you drive it hard, and when you're young, you want to drive it hard all the time, which is not a sustainable exercise both financially and in terms of staying alive.

So enjoy your N/A beauty, do some driving courses, get you full licence and then join the club, we'll be happy to have you

There is away around... But it is quite complicated.

You see, my Stagea (RB25DET) is registered as a 'business' vehicle. Hence being able to apply for an exemption on the grounds of it being a delivery vehicle, seems quite logical. I have been talking to 'Daniel Kuros', the guy incharge of exemptions. I ran the scenario past him and he said that it should pass no problem.

I didnt want the Stagea for a turbo though... I wanted to be different but practical at the same time. Importing, driving and owning this vehicle has taught me alot of things. Skylines nor Stagea's are cheap to run! And equally as hard to drive... I have been participating in a few track days and driver training days and am all the better for it.

Still wont be able to handle the car once I get it tuned though :) Should be rather quick...

you should buy an R33 GTS4 or an R34 GT, both are well under 20k landed and complied, and have the same looks as its turbo variant.

I reckon the best buy atm for P platers is a supra SZ. You can pick up an N/A supra for as cheap as 14 - 15k landed and complied (plus a grand and a bit to have it registered) and you'll have a car that's got some balls and a lot of good looks. check em out: http://www.j-spec.com.au/list/?keyword=supra

Well if you are complaining about 14-15k then you might as well forget the whole Skyline experience for the time being... talk to any SAU member and the average number for the first year (including car cost) will be around that if not more ($20k mark).

This covers - car costs, initial servicing, rego, insurance and the first few goodies that you decide on.

Since you are 17, your insurance will be higher than normal - even for the 32 N/A. Statistically speaking, it will have a lot on the insurance databases which does not work to your advantage in this case.

Saying that though, my 17 year old cousin (who turned 18 yesterday) will be taking delivery of a R34 GTT in a month's time :D

Hey satanic: Your 17 year old cousin is excaly one moth younger then me, im 18 on april the 8th. We both beet the system, well not really i got my p's in April last year and the new regs came in july, so im on the "old" system. I guess your cousin and i are lucky, then again older peopl again can say were disatvantage cuase we now have our p's for 3 years when a few years ago it was only 1.

Basically the point im saying the laws gona keep changing and there allwasy going to be a newer "yonger" drivers coming through disatcantaged is life.

Xihua, hang in there, i drive a turbo and im on my p's and its great, however i wrote of a car and learnt the hard way b4 my skyline.

My advice, get a N/A 300zx, there really nice, and u can get cheep ones. Girls love the Targa roof :P

roflmao. If you can't afford 15k then you shouldn't be owning an import.

Owning an import is not just about buying the car, its maintenance, insurance, rego, and quite possibly fines. You are young, and most possibly inexperienced, so you'd want insurance... plus what happens if someone steals your car, that's a huge investment gone right there. Insurance for a 2 door is more expensive than a 4 door, and an import is more than a domestic.

There's no fun in owning a nice car if you have to live on beans for the whole time you own it.

Money isnt an issue for me.. My father is abit of a "I think i know everything about cars" and doesnt want me to get a r34 for some reason.. He left me with r32 GTS which is small and quite harmless.. although he didn't mind me driving a turbo'd 32 so wtf? but yeah he has his reasons and r32 is the only way to go.. rego, insurance etc don't bother me as i aint paying it :):P
