Performance Exhaust Vs Epa Legal Noise (92db) !

Recommended Posts

Hi all, my mate just got a yellow conairy by the men in blue for exhaust noise in his r33 gts-t. It's an 3'' from the turbo down, hot dog resonator and cannon type muffler. My mate and I didn't believe it was illegal, because it still quite compares to the others around. We took a day off, went to EPA to test it out. The result was 93db !!! watdaaa !!! :)

Well, my question is, how do the others get away with their systems ?? or how many day off they have to take just to (1) remove the illegal ones => (2) fit back the standards => (3) show EPA => (4) fit back the illegal ones => (5) get pull over => and back to step (1). sighhhhh...

Actually, im looking for a legal 3'' system from the turbo down (with dump pipes) which produces reasonable power and note. But so far, some said it can't be legal with 3'' systems in the GTRs, because they are even noisier than the GTS-Ts.

Well, if any of you using a legal 3'' system, please reccomend me and how many KW should i get ??

THANKS !!!

it depends what u mean by silencer, it has to be permanent so nothing that just bolts in, ie those silencers that come with xforce exhausts wont do the job.

if u weld in another muffler that makes your exhaust quiet then that is fine.

if you dont like that idea ^^^^

buy a second hand standard exhaust from cat back and if you get done then just swap over exhausts for the epa and swap it back wen you get home

you can do that as much as u like, i do!! bummer is the epa guys no me pretty well now.... say hi for me next time your down

Had my R32 tested just recently. I've got 3 1/2 from turbo back, with cat. Thought it might be wise to put the silencer back on before I drove it up there. Pulled in the drive and the boys laughed at me.

So anyways, took to it to a mate and we put on a standard exhaust from a car just in from Japan, went and got it tested and just passed with 91. Now, what they also take into account is the engine noise. What mods has he had done under the bonnet?

Yep, many moons (about25 years) ago I was pulled over by the epa and had my 4 cylinder morris tested,,they put a mic on the exhaust and one on the engine,,

now my car at the time had twin 1 and 3/4 inch SU's and it blew a healthy 115 db,,

they told me to get it fixed and get it retested or i would be fined,, so I put on a stock exhaust, took it down, they put a mic onto the exhaust but not the engine, and then passed the car,, two weeks later I got the fine in the mail anyway,,

pr*^#s,,,

cheers

John

My car has a 3" cat back exhaust, i think its by Fujitsubo or someone. Anyone know if it'll be under 92db? Can i get it tested without fear of being defected?

Whom ever does the test can't legally book you. You can drive in and have the test done and drive out, all they can do is reccomend you have it done. The booking has to come from the Police or EPA equilvalent.

p.s. you won't pass.. :P

There's a method of passing noise tests at defect stations involving steel wool and chicken wire.

You have to be careful about how you mount the wire in the exhaust though. One of my friends tried this when he had been pulled over and had been told to go to pineapple street (Lancer Gsr), revved the car too hard on the way there and shot the wire out the exhaust. Ended up pulling around 95db from memory.

    • Hi there, after a quick google search I found this topic as I am also relocating the battery to the boot of my 1998 GTT. I was just wondering how you got on with installing the re-routing and specifically the installing of the harness protectors? How do they attach? Are they just a simple "click-in" affair, or do they attach with bolts? Does the GTT have all the necessary fixing holes for them, for example, where they locate on the chassis? Any help you can provide would greatly appreciated.
    • Thanks mate, yeah I've heard that alot and i am definitely regretting using the 25 Loom now, i have gone through and traced all the plugs from the 20loom and re wired them into the 25 loom, I have currently got Crank, Fuel and accessory's working, just need to finalise the loom and run the wire for the Ignition (Spark) and it should be running, will update if i have any luck.
    • Cheers lad, when I head over there I'll give it a shot.
    • Stock less likely to carry one like that than urethane, but still can, especially if the bolts are not as tight as they should be. If it's making that much noise you should be able to use a hose as a stethoscope> stick one end in your ear, crouch down and wave it around the various possible noise makers and get someone to lift the front end at the guard lip.
    • Broken actuator rod. Could be one of a couple of them broken. Or, it's locked and the central locking actuator is broken/stuck or the actuator rods between it, the lock and the key barrel are jammed or broken similarly. You'll probably need a locksmith/mechanic who is experienced with using slim tools to reach down next to the window glass to manipulate the mechanism. That's assuming that it is not so severely jammed/broken that nothing useful will move.
