Funny you mention that Harry, i just PMed Darren regarding each of his cars at the Gatton Sprints so i hope he doesn't mind me posting up this excerpt:

"Yeah 37.6 is my best in the GTR, I've only run the Onevia on 215/45/17 Feddy's and it ran 40 flat or there abouts on those, 180SX would be around the same times as GTR on proper semi's but not any quicker seeing as it wouldn't get off the line as hard but would handle better."

I'm not sure exactly what each of his cars have done, i just asked him for a quick summary.

I'm not aiming to win these things, but i'd love to be competitive, say in the top 15-20%. I think i'd be more satisfied being at the top of my class than having a fractionally faster overall time, but being lower in my class.

Yeah, cause everyone loves a smart arse. Read the post again - you didn't snag anyone.

I can't believe I am about to advocate anything other than a GT-R, but the following costs may prove to be illuminating:

4x255/40/17 RE55's at about $1500 total. May last a season depending on how many events you will do.

Brakes at $250 for a new set of front pads & fluids.

Suspension for about $3500 for springs/shocks/sway bars/alignment bushes.

HICAS locker say $200.

In this form you will have a reasonably competitive GT-R but the total is some $5k. Given the disparity in pricing between that & an S13 you will get alot more (competitive) bang for your buck in a Silvia that a Skyline. Can't believe I just said that.

A GT-R will be ahead on a hill climb, mostly because of its better launch & better torque. Bulk hp is very handy in getting up hills. On tight circuits a well sorted S13 will shine, however on a longer circuit a GT-R should take the silverwear.

At the end of the day there is only one winner & usually it is someone with a large wallet, a very quick car or something dedicated to circuit work. If you look to the class structures lately there are a lot of people running GT-R's/WRX's/Evo's & the numbers in class tend to be larger than in the sports car class. So for in class competition get a GT-R.

Failing that, can I suggest a Westfield of some description - cheap as chips to run, competitive in an outright sense & well scary becasue you are exposed to the elements & your backside is about 150mm off the ground. Driving a GT-R after that feels like swanning about in a limo!

Fatz may have been ranting, but i dont disagree with the crust of what he is saying.

At 250rwkws, a Silvia is going to be a very quick car. It wont need huge brakes, it wont need big $$$ spent anywhere to be quick.

A few of the Sydney guys may remember a white Series II S14 that had Alcon brakes, Recaro seat etc that use to run at the Motoconcepts days. Well that was my friends old 200SX, and with around 230-240rwkws on semi slicks, GAB suspension and the usual bolt ons it did 1:46s at Eastern Creek. It was a well sorted car and damn quick for what it was. I doubt too many R32 GTRs of similar value woudl get anywhere near it...

The quick silvias are about 2 sec slower than the qucik GTRs at Wakefield (1.08 vs 1.06).

But my point is, it doesn't matter how much quicker a GTR is if it spends most of its life in the garage because you can't afford the rebuild.

The GTRs doing 1:06s though, are they std turb cars or 300rwkws cars?

Someone will always be able to do something cheaper then you, get a better buy then yoiu, flat out drive better then you. But typically i would think a 20k S13 would be quicker around a track then a 20k GTR??????

Ummm, actually im not even sure thats the case, i have a gut feeling the 20k GTR will odds on grenade before the 20k S13

yeah for sure I am talking medium - highly modified cars, otherwise as you know they are doing 1.10 and 1.12 respectively :D

Anyway, I stick with my advice you get the most go and track time for your money with a 32 gtst with a big motor.

So taking that example from Wakefield a highly modded s13 would run around 1.08 and a stock to mild GTR would do around 1.08 to 1.10? I'd be happy with that.

I understand where you're coming from with the rb25/30 r32 gtst but i don't have the time or patience to go through with another project car. If i could buy one already done then i'd consider it.

best of both world slip a stock gtr motor into a silvia for 280rwkw

then you can have the fun and the rebuild cost

Um Neil if you aren't afraid of the dark side ie rotaries, this RX-7 is for sale. The owner competes in hill climbs, sprints, kharna's etc over here & usually wins his class and is thereabouts for outright honours. The car goes hard & is much cheaper than even an S13. Having seen it is is very well engineered the fuel system alone is a work of art) and has that angry bridgeport rotary noise that will piss your neighbours off no end.

When I chose the R32GTST for Improved Production I looked at Silvias and found very little weight difference. Without any drastic weight reduction, mine is at 1,220 kgs (plus driver) down from 1,260 kgs when it was standard. That's not a lot heavier than a similarly trimmed 200SX S14, with adequate brakes, wheels and tyres. I figured the better front suspension design and superior standard brakes were a good starting point, plus the 6 cylinder engine upgrades were endless in their possibilities.

All we have to do is get rid of the damn turbo inlet restrictors and we will be in with a chance.

I think there has been a rulign allowing them to run, ditto the S13s etc

Neil, what did you think of the rotary?

Its nice, but doesn't really suit street driving as much as the other 2 and i've really got no experience with rotaries compared to nissans.

The s14 is the heaviest of the silvia series, and does have better standard brakes, suspension and wheel track than the s13, but prices are pretty high also. The s13 is around 1120kg standard, and its pretty easy to get them down towards 1000kg. I'm not sure why the GTST doesn't appeal to me, i guess i'd sooner just stick with the GTR.

    • Can't say I've had a bad experience with one on my car, then again it only gets washed once or twice a year... The wheels on the other hand, get a good spray often due to my shitty dusty pads.
    • @MBS206 thats pretty neat and tidy to me!  I'll get a photo of mine when I'm out there next. It might require multiple photos to understand the scale of the atrocities though... In total I have 4 sheds of varying sizes and layouts. Main shed is 14x8, second shed is 3x8, third shed is 11x2.5, fourth shed is around 6x4.  All are pretty much full.   The main goal of my cleaning tsunami is to make the main shed predominantly car and motorbikes only. Second shed is my metal fab room (2 x bench grinders, drill press, bench belt sander, metal band saw, scrap metal storage and some of my garden tools.  3rd shed is more bigger garden stuff, storage for engine crane, jack stands, concrete grinder, concrete mixer, air compressor lives there, and it now has two 2mx2m pallet racking shelves with itemised boxes holding building stuff, electrical stuff, plumbing stuff, etc, etc.  The 4th shed is Ryobi electric ride on mower, mini boom sprayer, ancient Kubota tractor, more garden stuff!  I have got a lot of shit....  Then there's the pool house (8mx4m) and the pool pump shed (4mx4m).  I built all of the sheds over the 11 years we've been here.  The main shed was a Ranbuild kit, the rest are all custom made to fit the areas available. Building the main shed taught me a LOT as I had no idea about building anything prior to that!  I've still got one more in me. It will be my man cave which I poured the extra concrete for way back when I poured the concrete for the main shed. The idea is the Skyline will be a centre piece of the main cave once (if...) it's finished.  I told my now 14 year old son yesterday that I will 100% drive him to his year 10 formal in 2 years. Still a long way off but at least I now have a date to work towards! 🤣

    • Probably a smart choice to buy one vs build, purely for the motivation part as you said! Imagine the metal dust everywhere from grinding all the steel to build one. Ha ha ha!   Also, post a photo of your garage.   Mine is below, this is where I've been cleaning and have already half filled a caged 6*4 trailer. And this is after my cleaning expedition mentioned previously... The middle normally has a car in it, but I'm dumping things in the middle as I sort through them. And poor skyline was dusty and has had the lightest few drops of rain and now it looks atrocious and needs to be dragged back out and washed thoroughly! And yes to the right is technically another bay, you really can only see 2 bays out of 3 in this picture.  
    • It's more like on average the things I see a lot of things going wrong. Yes, usually the people who reach out are the ones who are having problems but on average it feels like mechanics and tuners here aren't really competent. I swing between thinking my standards are just way too high and wondering whether people really are just this dumb. I just had the strangest 10+ reply argument on a Facebook group over someone insisting that the factory R34 GTT boost control solenoid reduces boost pressure to 5 psi when it's on and raises boost pressure to 7 psi when it's off despite showing the exact plumbing in the factory service manual and the solenoid behavior detailed in the FSM.
