P4 will do encoding and office stuff better 3700+ will do 3dmark and games better

both PC must be running simular hardware like same hdd same amount of ram and most importantly same gfx card

which one would be your choice on a 2k budget, each? Ive recommended Asus, in particular the F3JP over the V6J but Im not with it in regards to laptops (never used one) and core duo etc.

I chose asus as they are manufacturers, and I figured they would be more reliable over 5yrs then Toshiba or the like.......

Apparently the 4600+ dual core is equivalent to 2 x 3800+ single cores, so even while not utilising the extra grunt available from the second core, it should be 20% faster.

Really the only time I need more power than I have now is when I'm encoding video, and doing things while playing a game at the same time - this is why I chose the dual core 4600+ over the FX-55 single core I could have purchased for a similar price.

Asus more reliable than Toshiba? Care to elaborate on that comment?

I know nothing about laptops. Nothing. Do Toshiba make their own components?

I simply figure seeing that Asus manufacture top motherboards and videocards (that cant be argued) then a laptop from Asus should be good quality.

Budget was originally $1500. Then one of the bosses suggested he wanted core duo (let me point out that the 2 bosses have never used a computer in their life until the past couple of months), so I upped the budget to 2grand to accomodate this. My suggestion was sata HD, 1gig ram, min 1.6ghz, etc, and I havent seen a new Toshiba with those specs for under 2k.

Cheers anyways, but Ive decided to get them the Asus F3JP, something that will last these 2 minimal users a good 5yrs or so. All they will be doing is word/exel & emails for work, rarely , and internet browsing & maybe using the laptop with a tv tuner down the track.

Are Assus considered to be un-reliable ?

meh, Im not concerned either way, 18more hours until my surgery, is the biggest worry on my mind.

Toshiba do tend to be a tad more expensive than some but they really are top quality laptops.

Asus should be ok, its not like its an Acer. :S

Its just that Toshiba are well known as a reliable business laptop.

Toshiba make their own chassis's just like Asus do. There was a time when Asus made chassis, then sent them to local retailers to assemble. I had built quite a number of Asus laptops, and found them better than your run of the mill non-branded chassis, but the top shelf stuff has always been IBM/Toshiba who do all their building in-house.

It's only recently that prices of IBM (Lenova) and Toshiba laptops have come down. Up until this year, sub-1000 dollar Toshiba laptops were unheard of.

I'd go for Toshiba personally, but i'm not a huge fan of their design. Recently i've been purchasing Dell laptops for our workplace, who has slowly migrated from Toshiba laptops. I've had no problems with Dell so far, and their top end lightweight gear is actually pretty bloody awesome, so much so i'm considering buying one for myself.

lol, I expect to be using my PC a fair bit over the next 4 weeks during recovery; go BF2.

might try overclocking the unit (p4 3.4, gigabyte mobo, 2gig ram, 7800gtx, raid 400mb sata HD, 9 fans) to 4000, havent gone past 3700 (8%) as yet but its been real stable and heat hasnt been a real issue

I run a 120gb thats happily 60% full. 8gb worth of family pics, almost 2gb of car related pics, a few bits of software and a couple of games (BF2)

I throw everything off to DVD and store it away, have a nice little program I slapped together to help me trace down what I need at a later date. Tends to be a bit of a habit I have now after loosing a few WD drives one after another (3-9months between failures) a few years back. This was back before the JB drives.
