HELP!!!!

I am having some serious issues with my PC when i run a graphics heavy game, I played Supreme Commander a few weeks back at a LAN and it worked fine, At the LAN i had to turn off my firewall and since then when ever I have tried to play anything that has high graphical requirements my PC shits it self and shuts down.

At the moment it only happens in Supreme Commander and Call of Jaurez

I'm going to try and DL the latest Direct X and see if that helps,

any other ideas on what could be going wrong or how to fix it????

need more system specifications to give you a good answer, but my guess would be powersupply

no offence taken Fish thats a system with a budget in mind i looked into the P35 and there not in aus yet when i looked middle of last week (they might be here by now)

as for MSY being a grey importer i was unaware of this and have now learnt a new terminology

i myself lean towards the WD stuff along with ATI stuff as i tried to say earlier is a personal preference

as with the A&R, IT Wearhouse, Radio Rentals, Harvey Norman and the likes least what we submited as a ok pc its more current tech then a pc from aforementioned traders

you wont be finding systems like this in any shop @ a price that compares to what me and cubes have stated, this price doesn't even include installation formating and benchmarking

you can also take my shopping list to MSY and get them to price match

i don't mind the OC but prefer the bigger cache of the e6600 and clock the e6600 to 3.2ghz or something

i couldn't find a comparison card for the 8800 in ATI due to there only being a 2900XT the pro isn't available in aus yet

i meant go shopping for bits and pieces to have one built, seems the smart thing to do.

check to see if your gfx drivers are current maybee uninstall old drivers and reinstall even if there is no update

:) this has only made my PC go slow while doing everything, even opening a folder on the desktop it now has to sit and think it over for 10 - 15 seconds

is GRAW2 out now???? I have been waiting for it and didn't see it yesterday at the shops

no its a MP demo nick 1gb's worth im sure i posted links to it a page back i will check

EDIT

yes it was here it is again

just downloaded this before looks very nice took about 6 mins to download :)

GRAW2 - GameArena

GRAW2 - Internode

GRAW2 - 3FL

ok sorry missed that :)

may have to do a reformat tomorrow :P

reformat probably wont do much for you... but more system specs might give me a better idea

ASUS P5GD1

P4 3.2 Ghz

1.5Gb DDR RAM

512 GeForce 7950GT DDR3

It has been working fine for 3-4 months now with out any issues, I went to a LAN a few weeks back and it started the day after that. I have done a full Virus scan and come up with nothing. The new drivers allow me to start and run the game now its just running a lot slower than last time.

And i finally got a copy of BF2 last night

so your not getting the restarting now you have updated drivers? did you do motherboard drivers as well?

Not offended. :) Discussion is good.

But a few questions...

have you actually read MSYs warranty conditions???

1) if the product is "DOA" they charge you a 15% restocking fee, and if you want a refund, the dont refund and CC surcharges

2) all products, regardless of their real warrantys, have a 1 year return to manufacturer (ie. tiwan) warranty

Where does it state that? I recently purchased some kingston ram for a system, one stick was DOA they swapped it over without hesitation.

also if people are concerned about failures, the solution seriers PSU in the antec case (although being 10000000 times better than the one in Madaz's quote) will fail! the official Antec supplier to Australia (note, msy grey market import their parts) have told everyone who buys from them to stop selling any solution series PSU because they WILL fail within about 2 years. The contractor that Antec chose to make the PSUs for them deliberatly used under-spec parts without telling Antec and hence the almost 100% failure rate on them.

Antec's has had this problem all along and not just with the grey market. In the past 1yr+ Truepowers Neo's etc some if not most have had crap caps used in them. www.badcaps.net

Antec are/were trying to get on top of it if they haven't already.

I've built a few systems using the solution series NSK6500 cases, I've had a look at what caps they use in their PSU's and they are decent quality caps. So I am assuming antec has got on top of their dodgy supplier as I haven't seen them use bad caps within the last year.

The reason for checking what caps they use.... I've bought Antec TruePowers in the past from the non-grey market that have had their caps go belly up after 1-2years.

It was a general antec problem not just antec grey market problem.

another example of grey importing is the fact that that gigabyte motherboard (i presume they are quoting the 965P-DS3P) has been discontinued, any official gigabyte distributor in australia has dropped it for the P35-DS3 range

You can get the DS3P from various sources around adelaide that are not grey importers.. Its all about what stock levels are left at their warehouse.

----

Regarding the seagates expected life... Where did you get that information from? How do you know it will 'really' affect the drives life?

They have a 5year manufactures warranty.

A company wouldn't be silly as to open them selves up to a massive loss should their drives really only last 2years.

Its interesting to note when WD went through their big click of death debarcle they dropped the warranty on the drives from the 5years down to I think its 3years now? With only their raptor drives holding a 5year warranty.

well, see attached piccy of highlited msy conditions (circled in red).. i mentioned it elsewhere, but as if a bunch of skyline owners care about grey market imports :)

yes, the antec problem is antec wide... its just the offical distributors arent selling the solution series anymore. as far as i know, the tamering was only with the solution series, the rest of the range is to spec

yeah, antecs solution was to stop selling the selling the solution series PSU and replace them with the "earth watts" which are a VER nice PSU i might add =P

the GA-965P-DS3 series is probably still floating around at the retail level, just as you say, but has been discontinued/replaced at the wholesale level

--------

as far as segates expected life time is concered, its just the average figure of all the waryantys were dealing with... first hand, hands on information from working in the industry

have a read of the fine print on the segate "5 year" waranty.. its quite supprising:

years 1-2: replacment drive

year 3: referbished drive (ie broken drive the have opened up and "fixed")

year 4: 15% refund (last time i checked)

year 5: 10% refund (last time i checked)

had a link to the page on segates site that states this, but it has ben moved, so the link is broken.... once again, it comes down to personal preferance, and your own experianes witht he brand... if you install a HDD properly then there should be no problems with it, despite the brand

all HDD waranties keep on changing, i remember at one point everyone was only doing a 1 yr warantee on them.... that was about 6 or 7 years ago now.. but still

companies are silly to open themselfs up to issues where components fail 2/3rd of the way threw their waranty period... but thats the sad part about the industry, that LOTS of them do by putting cheaper components in/on their parts... and lots of users just dont realise what they are actually buying =( this is the main reason i chirped up about this because i hate the lack of information that is avalible to the genral product about some of these issues

ok now it doesn't crash when i first open the game it crashed 10 mins in to it

systems powering down under high load is generally a PSU issue... but sometimes computers dont like car trips, so things could be loose inside... if you know what your doing TURN OFF THE COMPUTER and just make sure everything is seated properly... otherwise, get someone to take a look at it

Thats not true, no matter what they state if its broken they must replace it or give you a full refund including any surcharge. If they say otherwise contact consumer affairs and they will sort it out for you.

When issued a warranty thats is the manurfacturers warranty not the stores, so technically the manufacturer has to honour it not them, however you can take it back to them 2 years later (say 3yr warranty) and make them organise it (I've done this before and if you make enough of a fuss/get consumer affairs involved they will) usually its easier to go straight to the service agent though if they are located in Adelaide.

Also if say someone sells you something brand new with a 1 month warranty (lets for example use a TV) and it breaks after 2 months you can take them to court and get them to replace/fix it at their cost. Theres a law (I don't know the details but I can try and dig it up) that if you are sold something and it breaks basically far before it should then they are liable to fix it.

Australian consumer law states that:

1) you cannot sell a new peice of equiptment that is deemd to be faulty

2) all equiptment has to have a 7 day warranty, anything longer than that is optional

when you get your invoice that is a legal contract between you and the parties that provided you with the equiptment. if the invoice states that it has a 1 year return to manufacture warranty, that is what you get, regardless, consumer affairs cant do sh*t if that is written on the invoice.

and yes, it is illigal to charge you for DOA replacments, but that is what the pricelist states...

that highlighted text doesn't say anything about DOA just after 1 year of warranty is up you have to get the warranty stuff done yourself

as rolls pointed out make enough noise and they will do it

Condition: All Parts-1 year return to manufacturer warranty (From Date of invoice). Replace/Upgrade/Refund (15%re-stocking fee apply & Credit Card Surcharge non-Refundable) within 7 Days from Date of Invoice

i think you will find that the 2nd part of the conditions is what is referd to as DOA, most people in the industry know that the DOA period is the first 7 Days after you purchase a product, they are one and the same. this ia all they have to offer under consumer law is a 7 day warranty, that states quite clearly that they carge you for if you wish to use it, why else would you want something replaced in the first 7 days?? "this is working can i get it replaced with another one?"

im not the one making the rules, im not the one breaking them... all im doing is pointing out that if you get in a bind with MSY, and that is written on your invoice, you are legaly screwed, there is nothing you can do but ship it off to tiwan or if its in the first 7 days, pay the fee... thats the terms you have agreed to by purchasing from them, and it is within their rights providing they offer the minimum warranty on a product to do anything they like re warranty after that initial 7 day period is over....

im not going to stop anyone from buying from there, and its totally up to you if you choose to.. all im saying is whatch out if you do and make sure you cover your butt!! there wont be anyone in australia to help you out if things get really pear shaped a year or 2 down the track!

Fishpaste...

A couple of interesting worry's on the Wd site.

No limited warranty is provided by WD unless your WD Product ("Product") was purchased from an authorized distributor or authorized reseller.
If your Product was purchased as a component integrated within a system by a system manufacturer, no limited warranty is provided by WD. Please contact the place of purchase or the system manufacturer directly for warranty service.

The warranty situation is a bit of a worry.

How many computer shops are an 'authorised' reseller of wd, seagate and other hardware? How do we find out if they are?

As the above states if the reseller isn't authorised the warranty is up to the reseller; if they go bust. No warranty.

I experienced something similiar when I was younger. I bought a video card; a couple of months later it stopped working, I went back to the computer shop and they had closed up. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me to contact the reseller or their distributor. Which is impossible so my loss.
