if you want quantity = adam

if you want quality = internode

If you want quantity go with TPG. Much better plans than Adam for big downloaders. Crap aftersale service though.

Plus 35GB is nothing if you download in HD - a 1 hour (43mins run time) TV show in 720p is 1.2GB. The latest episode of Top Gear s14e06 in HD 720p is 2.2GB.

Most 720p movies range from 4.5GB to 8GB and if you want to go for full 1080p a small file is 8GB up to 40GB for a proper Bluray copy.

So you need to add up what you would want to download. For eg - Dexter, Dollhouse, Top Gear, Californication, Entourage, Flashforward, Lost etc then work out how large the file sizes are, multilpy that by 4.x (weeks per month), add some movies, some GB for youtube and general browsing and very quickly you go over 35GB and are being shaped. More so for online gaming. Edit - I didn't even mention porn!

However some ISP like Adam & Internode (IIRC) have sharing between members that doesn't count to your overall download quota and this may work out cheaper again if you can see what files you'd have access to. But having said all of the above for noobs I always advise go with Internode purely for quality of service and after sales support.

Define cheap?

A Billion 7401VGP with 4 ports, wireless, VoIP/802.11g ADSL2+ router from MSY sells for $138. Covers most options you'd want from a home router/switch. I have had one for a year or so and run my PC, PS3, Xbox & PVR through it plus if a friend brings their laptop over they can log into the wireless.

***Disclaimer*** - there a many people on SAU who know more about PCs and the internet than me. I am just a heavy user.

Adrian, youll be surprised at how much of the 25Gb youll have left at the end of the month. Watch the peak/offpeak times too. PS3 online uses f**kall. We have 3 users at home and 25 gig is plenty, granted we dont do a hell of alot of music/video downloading.

I spent 2 years commissioning & troubleshooting xDSL services, from experience I'd highly recommend not touching anything with Belkin written on it (unless it's a laptop bag ).

Billion will serve most people just fine and has been mentioned will have the features you need, if you are far from the exchange or have poor line quality you might get a better sync from an older model linksys (e.g wag54gv3)

Keep in mind you might not be able to get phone support from your ISP if you don't use a modem supplied by them.

Hey guys, my Toshiba Satellite A300 decided that wireless wasnt an essential feature and now wont work. The wi-fi switch is on. My connections manager shows me switch status = on, but connection = disabled. Should i try installing a new driver for it?

delete the wireless device from device manager and reboot - that may fix the problem (has before)

new driver cant hurt

sometimes wireless adaptors decide to 'break' spontaneously, hopefully thats not the case for you

some models also have an on/off setting in the BIOS (such as my eee), check bios to make sure the HW is enabled.

I don't know if anyone here followed this, but it's a good read:

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/12/fail_duke_nukem/

Duke Nuken: Forever... I remember them talking about releasing it way back in '98!! But there's the full story about it. Shame it never got released.

Don't worry, it's still in development...

Did you see the leaked vids/pics when 3DR got closed? Looked pretty cool, the story even leaked too; pure awesome in that Duke sorta way

As the modem/internet conversation wasn't wanted in The Wasteland...

This should be in the computer thread for future reference I suppose but I've got the Netgear DG834N....how do they fair in relation to Billion & Belkin Abe?

I don't mind Netgear, i still prefer a Billion over them, but if i had to choose between a Belkin and Netgear, i would choose the Netgear. The DG834 Series is quite good, havent had any bad experience with them at work, and also a decent price. D-Link and Netgear are the 2 other choices i would choose other then Billion, Netcomm and Belkin i tend to stay away from.

A mate of mine has had awful experience with Belkin, it was always dropping out, overheating - So hot you couldn't even touch it. It would be fine for the first 1-3 months, then they started playing up, all of them replaced under warranty from Harvey Norman. He finally had enough and managed to get a refund, and bought a Billion, no issues what so ever.

Yeah think I'm using Netgear wireless as well. Drops out when its really stormy sometimes. But we have a few things that might not be helping it eg. Foxtel, UHF radio thingy majigy

Wireless really depends on what version it is, ie. B/G/N.

B is crappy and old

G is better but is getting rather old in the tooth now, but does alright for a basic home network.

N is where everything is heading, has better encryption, has a longer range and is designed to not have as much interference from Microwaves, Cordless Phones, Brick Walls and the Weather.

G is mainly affected by Cordless phones and other wireless networks in the area, especially if they are on the same frequency. Wireless operates on the 2.4GHz band, but you can change the channel in the modem and help improve the signal, ie 2.40-2.49GHz.

Other the repositioning the modem or the receiver, you can put a higher gain antenna onto either end..or both ends. Stock they come out with a 4db (i think) antenna, you can pick up a 10db antenna for around $30, this will improve signal dramatically.

    • Greetings to you all, It's an honour to be part of the great forum. I’m happy to learn and build good  relationships with members of this community. Thanks for having me!
    • normally i don't like to get involed with these kinds of self promotions stuff, but good on you for living your dream man.
    • Remember our cars are 30+ years old so expect the rubber bits to leak. I'd go around your engine bay with a can of "start ya bastard" or similar and look for leaks. FYI I got my car 10+ years ago with the standard boost restrictor in place, I removed it when I got it and the car never had any issues since (besices a leaking manifold gasket). tl;dr- Look for leaks before proceeding.
    • That SSR is actually the same (or similar) as the Jaycar 100AMP SSR (which I use). They suggest the resistor to stop the SSR turning on when the ECU turns off (I believe). I personally don't use the resistor as I use the 5V output from the ECU to supply power to the SSR. I do however run a flyback diode, the old Haltech documentation was wrong too and didn't specify the fly back, I mentioned it to a few of their staff and they eventually added it in.
    • I did manage to do this without removing the engine or front cross member, but I had the advantage that the exhaust manifold was removed. I am not setup to support the engine from the top or remove it. 1. Loosen the engine mount nuts so they only have a nut of thread. If it is a manual, I think you have to remove the gearbox to engine support brackets. 2. Jack up the engine off the bottom idler mount. Jack it up till the end of the slot and nut on the mount. You need this clearance to get the pan out at the rear of the engine. 3.Break the sealant seal to sump. I found a oil pan separator tool helpful to get it started. 4. The oil pick up can be removed with the gap available.  5. The oil pan can be removed now. 6. Before assembling, do not apply sealant to the oil pick up area as your hand will rub it all off but apply to the other three and a bit sides. 7. It is a two man job to put the oil pan back, with the sealant, as you do not want it to touch anything and rub off. 8. With one person supporting the oil pan the other can fit the oil pickup 9. Apply the remaining sealant. This would be more difficult with the manifold or turbo in place, but I think it could be done. As you can see my sealant is a bit ugly, but good enough to seal. 10. Lift the sump up to the engine and bolt it on. We found it was easier to use two long guide bolts at each end to get it nice and aligned without touching.
