Lads, I need some help.

My sister was downloading some shit via torrents and she said all this spyware/malware shit popped up and now the fking computer won't let me do anything.

Pretty much as soon as I turn it on all this crap pops up telling me I've got bulk amount of nasty shit and to buy 'Antispyware soft' to get rid of them, which seems like a dodge way to get me to enter some credit card details in an unfamiliar site. I've downloaded the first page worth of programs from download.com when you search for free security programs and it won't even let them install, it goes to the 'run' or 'cancel' screen then does nothing.

I keep getting 'Application cannot be executed. The file wscntfy.exe is infected' and the little red shield with the x on it keeps filling up the taskbar down the bottom, like a new one pops up every second till the whole task bar is full of red shields then I hover the mouse over them and they disappear.

No programs will work it just keeps loading these red shields and popping up that error message and trying to get me to buy 'Antispyware soft'. Internet itself is workin fine so far though.

Any ideas on how I can 1) get my programs to work and 2) get a program that will get rid of this shit?

i cant trouble shoot at the moment but you need to start in safe mode and possibly install

Avast, AVG, or Panda Antivirus

and do a scan and get rig of everything

if that doesn't work you need to go into msconfig and disable startup items that relate to the infection which unless you know what your doing i would tell her to take it to someone like Inspect-a-gadget << club supporter 10% discounts apply for club members

Option 1. Take it somewhere to get fixed ~$200

Option 2. As Madaz said, load into safe mode and try and install AVAST or MalwareBytes...I dont suggest AVG, I see too many PC's at work with this installed, and it makes more issues then it fixes...if it fixes anything at all.

Option3. Use another pc that has a decent Antivirus system and up to date, suggest BitDefender, Kaspersky, or TrendMicro. Plug your Hard Drive into that system as a secondary and scan with Antivirus, hopefully that will fix the problem, but by the sounds you have a more serious issue.

Option 4. Find out what infections you have and google the removal process for them. Will leave windows some what shagged, as the newer smarter virus's hook into windows real well, and when you remove them you tear bits of windows out as well, so this is more a temporary fix...similar to Option 3.

Option 5. Back Up & Reinstall. Fail Safe method.Get an External Hard Drive, or another Hard Drive in the PC, Back Up to it - Copy Files, ie Documents, Movies, Music, Etc. Unplug Ext Hard Drive/Hard Drive, Reinstall Windows, Install Drivers, Install Windows Updates, Install a Good AntiVirus System - Refer to Option 3, Update AntiVirus System, Plug in Ext Hard Drive/Hard Drive, Scan with AnitVirus System, and then copy your data back across.

Option 6. Get me to do it...for beer + cost of AntiVirus System ~$35

They're a really nice case. My partner just built one and added lots of extra noctua fans to it in all the extra spots. It's a nice subtle case.

I'm a big fan of the old Antec Sonata III, and if I ever wanted more hard-drive bays to replace my sonatas - I'd probably go this case for the extra-subtle look, and yet lots of capability and cooling. I've been very impressed.

(I have one sonata 3 with vmware C2Q 3 x1TB RAID5, one with C2Q 1x500GB windows 7 workstation, and Lian Li Armorsuit PC-80B with 16 drives as fileserver)

I assume it is also called "Internet security" and has a little Vista style shield with the 4 windows colours in it? I have had a heap of clients get this virus AND put in their credit card details .... idiots. But each time I think I have got rid of the virus, when you reboot it comes back.

Pray you haven't got any data you actually need on your hard drive, and nuke it is my advice.

If you have data you desperately need, do as Steve says and reboot in safe mode, clean what you can, then reboot in normal mode, back up your data onto a flash drive (NOT dvd as the next computer wont' be able to clean it with it's own antivirus), and then nuke your drive and go from there.

I can rid of that one, been seeing that mostly at work, but it does shag windows, so you are better off with the back up and reinstall.

That does shit all, the virus's these days are too advanced for that small fry stuff, they infect windows in a greater way then what a system restore can do, hence a real pain to get rid of.

yep, system restore is the FIRST place a virus places itself .... it is completely useless in the case of a virus. In fact, I turn it off on ALL of my client's computers

I ghost my boot drive every couple weeks, and keep the image on an external drive that is only plugged in for back ups... i learnt the hard way lol

Fixed probably 10 cases (without having to re-install the OS or lose data) of those viruses in the last year and they're no where near as difficult as they seem. Fixed one called antiviruspower and it's associated shit just last night....

Start with a little app called 'Hijack this' from trend micro, follow the instructions to rename the .exe before running from desktop. Kill the process and delete. Also check C:\Program Files\Common Files\XXXXX as sometimes they're nice and actually leave you an uninstaller

As mentioned run Malware Bytes or similar and finally something like a cracked version of registry mechanic or similar.

As stated already, back up valuable data (and/or image your OS) and make sure your OS and AV software is up to date.

Well I have bitten the bullet and bought a 64Gb GSKill Falcon SSD for my old Phenom 9500 rig and put Windows 7 on ..... have to say I am pretty impressed - she certainly moves ok now! Also picked up another 1.5Tb HDD to add to my 4Tb already .... should sort out my storage woes for a little while ....

SSD's really do boogie. I put an ssd in my last eee and installed win7 - with 2gigs of ram, 1.6ghz cpu it booted win7 faster than win7 boots on a WD raptor on a quad core i7 920 with 12 gigs of ram...

would love to get a pair of those 128gig ssd's and raid0 them - would be absolutely ballistic
