Will do V-spec - it's back at the workshop as we speak getting the bonnet replaced, than he's pulling the gearbox out and going to pull it apart.. hopefully he can see what the problem is when it's apart..

if it goes back in and i've still got a whine i'll murder someone - however I think i'm right on it being in the front bearing..

see how we go..

Well.. its now the 29th May and I may have finally managed to get the problem sorted out..

Car was dropped off with the mechanic approx 3 weeks ago and counting..

Last week he gave it to a "gearbox guy" to take a look at.. rang him today.. informed me that they have replaced the input shaft bearing + the main shaft bearing..

am meant to be getting the car back on wednesday.. i'll update everyone than with what exactly they have done and how it feels..

so whats the result??

Ahhh.. that's a very good question..

The result was a) supposedly the guy changed the input shaft bearing + 3/4th bearing (main bearing).. Also cleaned up the 2nd gear synchro..

Now.. notice I said "supposedly"..

Well.. how's it driving.. still the same.. sounds the same, 2nd gear synchro def needs replacing it's difficult to get in when cold.. once warmed fine..

Noise levels are the same, i've just gotten used to it.. i'm saving to go on a holiday - and nothing has changed in almost 4 months - so i'm just leaving it be..

2 choices are to get a 2nd hand gearbox or get this rebuilt.. right now.. i'm just being nice too it and not really smashing it, something is probably worn or out of line, currently not getting worse so not worth me trying..

Mechanic agrees it's the gearbox, however we have just left it due to a couple of things (such as the front of my car getting bashed by a ute there) - I've been recommended a couple of places to go - maybe when I get back in Jan.. wouldn't mind a PFC though..

NOTE: Reason why I didn't update is because nothing was f**kin fixed.. so I was pissed off for approx a month.. and didn't feel like revisting it ;)

If you have no noise in 4th then odds-on its one or all of the countershaft bearings that are on the way out. When in 4th gear the main and input shafts are effectively locked together and there's is virtually no load on the countershaft (thus reduced or no noise from defective countershaft bearings). In all other gears, load passes through the countershaft....and so you get noise.

With these gearboxes it's usually the countershaft centre support bearing that gives way first. Seen more than one or two of these gb's where the cage had disintegrated and most of the balls had migrated to other parts of the gearbox.

We changed the oil in the gearbox 3 times, - didn't find any a) ball bearings and b) metal shavings each time..

personally - I don't think they changed anything, I think they just gave my mechanic some old bearings from somewhere and said "put this oil in after 1000kms"..

Steve, how long do you believe it would take to change the countershaft bearings? i'd believe you might as well replace the synchros that are worn at the same time..

Sorry to start this thread up again after so long, but i'm having the same problems with my Gearbox / clutch.

Whining noise in all gears except 4th, until the clutch pedal is pressed down. Even does it on tickover.

"Links" mate, did you finally get this resolved, and if so, what was the outcome.

cheers fella,

Any updates?

I just got back from a 2000km return trip and I've now got this same problem... I'm happy to spend the cash to fix it but it sounds like no one has an extra answer. I've got a standard S3 R33 GTR drivetrain with a ORC twin plate.

got the same problem with my 20 box, replaced the main input bearing and guess what, did f@k all and cost me a 1000 bucks.

just guna bite the bullet a buy a recently rebuilt box, just lucky its a 20 and not a 25 im after, save me a few dollars.

still interisted to hear if anyone finds out what the problem actuly is with this.

OK ima level it for you guys . im a gearbox builder of 6 yrs now and a bearing whine isnt constant its more of a grumble ,

your problems are as follow , 1,2,3,5, place load on the input and cluster, once in 4th the input and cluster gears are not used, its not bearings at all its the input and counter that need replacing due to the gears beeing flatend out or possibly streched ater a huge thrashing Or wear and tear and oil not beeing changed enough , its extremly common in these boxes , but it will not damage the gearbox in anyway at all only annoy the shit out of you ,

My r32 gr does it to , i tell people its got and aftermarket gearset in it LOL ,,

If you want it fixed replace the input shaft and counter, and ill guarentee it will dissapear and so will $1800

all nissan gearsets whine after a while right down to Navaras LOL

hope this clears it up for you AND im 100percent sure this is the niose your hearing,

mine use to whine at first, then later on it got louder and started shuddering on idle, sounded like a small helicopter.

i thought it was the thrust bearing so i changed it & suprise suprise its still there. when i down gear, the sounded would be so loud its fken irritating.

turns out its the main bearing & input shaft tahts rooted so instead of fixing it, im going to get a new box as thats a cheaper option. its still drives fine but the noise bugs me!

I have a whine in my 89 gtr box in first and second gear, i've owned the car for 10mths and the noise has been there all along and hasn't changed at all. The box was rebuilt ($2800) by the previous owner only about 6mths before I bought it. My local clutch mechanic said the box isn't in trouble it's just a bearing noise and to not worry about it for now unless I want to throw money away.

Ive got a noise too - sounds a bit like a low, constant breathing sound...the time when its most audible is when im rolling to a stop, in gear or in neutral, with the clutch pedal IN. Once the car comes to a halt, the noise ceases. Cant hear it any other time because of the exhaust, but I assume its there. Any ideas on what this could be? New clutch going in next week, will get them to change release & thrust bearings...

Since we're sharing, I'll let you all know what i've got. i jsut replaced my gearbox due to a naughty drive shaft shearing at the uni joint and punching a hole in my '98 R33 GTR box. I picked up a '94 R32 box (identical, just older) from a very nice chap. he told me the box was reconned at 25,000km before he got it, then he replaced it with a dog box. I get whine in 1st, 2nd 3rd & 5th, and it crunches into 4th if i shift to quickly. I also have a lot of clutch noise at idle in neutral.

The good news is the box feels awesome, shifts well (except 4th sometimes) and the car doesn't have any vibrations or shudder or anything. I've put 75W90 oil in it, and i'm going to try some additive ot bring the noise down. After that i'll try a thicker oil or redline oil.

So I don't think it's a big problem, but i'll let you all know in 6 months if it's worse, better or still the same

Wow, for such a lot of people with the same problem this seems like a tricky one to solve!

I've got the same issue i think:

Clutch Pedal OUT: Very noticable but subtle grinding sound

Clutch Pedal IN: No sound at all

Only between 2000-2500rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd: Loud grinding/crunching sound that increases with revs then disappears over 2500rpm.

I dont seem to have the whine that you guys are talking about though. Would mine be the same issue?

  • 1 year later...

Sounds like we've all got the same issue. I get heavy vibration at 1500 to 1800rpm in ALL gears. But more monticable in 1st, 2nd, 3rd I guess due to lower gear ratio. 2 x gearbox specialists on hearing my observations say it's the input cluster or some such thing - ie too much lash in the gears. At idle is is fairly quiet so they don't think it is bearing related.

Anyway - now I get crunching in 2nd and 3rd when shifting normally - but it is intemittant.

I think it's time for a new gearbox - are the one from Just Jap actually NEW ?

I've got the same symptoms - pretty much exactly as described by Primordial above.

Hoping a change of oil to the Redline may help. Would really like not to have to replace the box...
