I know it's not really Skyline related, but has anyone noticed that since around lunch time today (Sunday 12th), there has been continuous patrols of fighter jets across the metropolitan area in Melbourne?

I was on Bridge Road around 3pm today and could just hear the roar of jets going past, about 5 mins later I heard and saw what looked like 4 FA/18 fighters going directly south over the CBD/inner city, saw them at least 2 times after that again flying back and forth in a straight line formation. Everyone kept looking up to see what the huge noise was.

I live 35km from the city in the SE suburbs and for the last few hours have heard jets roaring back and forward at least 5 times now. why do jets need to be patrolling this far out of town for? I haven't actually seen them out here but you can tell it's them by the louder roar than standard commercial jets.

Commonwealth Games has the air force on full time sky patrols across Melbourne? must admit it's pretty awesome but scary at the same time lol :P feels like we're at war! never seen fighters patrolling the sky like this before

Yeah last week they had military choppers patrolling the western skies @ nite. I saw them from far, but a friend told me that there was a guy hanging out the side with this massive machine gun(they were flying low over his backyard).

i was like WTF, and he said its all good prolly for he commonwealth games!

Sorry to sound like a bitch though, but that seems nice that the governmant only gives a sh!t about terrorism when we have visitors, what about your own people u pieces of sh!t!!!

I remember when Mr Bush was in Canberra we had 4 or 5 F/A-18's a few km's apart each just flying a circle around Canberra. Pretty standard fair these days for high profile events, just in case a Laden supporting person manages to get their hands on a set of Boeing keys again.

yeah thats so true.

just like they have extra police now...

i realy hope the train system f**ks up :P teach em a lesson for making me late to work 75% of the time :)

imho a hornet wouldnt b able to take down a jumbo.... bring back the tomcat :P woot

DUDE! an FA18 can easily take down a jumbo. They can be equipped with AMRAAM missiles; a few of these missiles can bring even the largest aircraft down.

i think you're both missing the point here.

If you were a terrorist, why would u bomb melbourne normally?? not too many other countries would be overly concerned. now that we have the comm games and are centre of attention, it's a gold mine for those terrorists to get attention. the chance of a terrorist attack would be a lot higher during the comm games than during any other part of the year if u ask me. and i'd personally rather our defence force be properly trained and equipped, rather than sitting there sinking the beer until theres an emergency.

Its all a part of the games.

There are 4 or 6 Black Hawk choppers based down @ HMAS Cerberus in Hastings.

Cerberus primarily is a training base, there has been a whole blocked cleared out for the SAS who landed down there around a week... maybe two ago and thats until the games have finished

They have been in serious training and preparation as have other parts of the Defense force.

I've also notcied a large amount of choppers doing dusk runs and the like around St. Kilda/Pt/Sth Melb... obviosuly getting familiar with where they are going to be around

There is no mucking around at all

Haha a newer F/A-18C+ maybe, our poverty pack F/A-18A's and B's are probably going to fall apart soon due to the air frame being so old, let alone be able to actually shoot down an air to air target (these air to air systems are almost identical to how they were in the late 70's, only air to ground has been upgraded comprehensively).

Defence Force is flogging 74 dead horses with our "fighters", they are the most primitive fighter on the market currently (except for the few countries still running with Mirages and MiG-21's).

if you were a terrorist why would you destroy the 2 towers in america normaly ?

or why would you blow up trains in spain normaly ???

I agree though, obviously the risk is greater now.. but if its so vital they practice over melbourne where have they been the last few years ?

btw.. :) anyone seen the gr8 job they didn cleaning up the trains.. now instead of seeing grafiti...

you see grafiti and huge black smudges on the walls... looks real classy....

The F-18s have been taking off from the local RAAF base here, was about 2 every 90mins or so last night, the last at about 9.45pm or so..... I live not far away, they sound awesome on take-off.

I think the exclusion zone is a 75k radius from the MCG...most probably calculated to give the fighters enough time to intercept anything that enters this zone before it can reach it's target (MCG).

I just hope one or more of them dont fall out of the sky over Melb. I can't imagine the cost involved in this exercise, it must be enormous.

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
    • That's all good, I thought I was missing some interesting feature! Maybe @PranK can double check if that is something that is meant to be operating or not.
    • I hope that is not something that bad. From what i remember he said that only first gear is "hard" to get in and that he has couple of ideas what to try next but idk 😕  hope it is not gearbox out. I will let you know.
    • If it's not the hydraulics, it is probably gearbox back out. Usually as per @Duncan's post, or otherwise associated with not getting the throwout fork positioned correctly. All the way up to catastrophically bolting shit back together without it being aligned properly and wrecking the clutch/input shaft/flywheel/something else.
