Hi,

Like most people with a GTS I am currently contemplating selling up and getting a GTR. I had never driven an R32 GTR before and was very excited about having a go on the weekend. The car in question was a '92 GTR with a Blitz exhaust and pod filters. Something pretty stock as that is the track I have chosen to go down. I believe that the car was running stock boost.

Whilst I observed the obvious cosmetic differences to the car and realise that owning the legend is different to having a GTS I was relatively unimpressed with the vehicle's performance. It seemed to be about as quick as my GTS (not much quickler if at all). It was happier to lay down the speed than my GTS but I felt no real difference in the delivery - but I guess that I was surprised as to how little additional torque the car gave up.

My car is a '93 R32 GTS4 with HKS Exhaust (front pipe back), VG30 turbo, Bosch VL Turbo fuel pump, GTR front mount, pod filter and tuned ROM - nothing crazy.

Handling-wise I did not exepct any difference in the cars as the GTR has stock suspension (plus front and back strut braces) whilst my GTS has Bilstien shocks, King Springs, front and back strut braces and pineapples. To be fair the GTR felt very sharp and was a lot less bumpy!

I guess that the point of my thread is to give other people my opinion, particularly if they are thinking of trading-up. The second purpose of the thread is for people to share their thoughts.

My point is not to tell people how mad my GTS is - I would prefer it if someone could prove that I am a dreamer and convince me to spend the $20k difference in buying a GTR.

Ok, very easy.

Go find a GTR owner with decent power and suspension setup - get them to take you for a drive.

You will notice the difference.

Also, if you are chasing good street power, you can put the boost up to 15psi, use STOCK turbos, larger exhaust, good airbox, MAYBE clutch. Result should be around 260 rwkw. Do that with a GTST it will cost you alot more due to the things that max out and break by that stage.

I have an R32 GTR with very basic mods - (pods/PFC/N1s and zorst) so probably about the same level of mods you list for your GTST and I have a lazzzyy 300awkw - all day every day - all at ~1 bar

even when you get to 250rwkw+ in your GTST - you can not actually use it :D

But be warned - an R32 is an old car (no little old ladies either) - as they say buying the GTR is the cheap part - owning one - now that takes commitment

I sorta know where you're coming from as I have a modded R32 GTS4 as well... and when you compare it to an R32 GTR in daily driving duties, I really could not tell the difference.

However on a track at full throttle is when you will notice the difference between a modified R32 GTS4 and an R32 GTR.

However you will notice an immediate difference in handling and power when you compare your GTS4 to an R33 GTR or an R34 GTR, even in day to day driving. I find the R32's AWD system a little laggy, wheras its a lot more interactive in the latter models.

After owning an R33 s2 25gtst , wrxmy2000 and r32gtr, I still own the gtr. The r33 was a great car but a little more likely to spin the rears but with that said cost me bugger all to keep on the road. The GTR on the other hand has cost me a small fortune. The GTR is by far a more enjoyable ride.{their sex on wheels} you Know :)

As the other people have said, take less money to get more power but you will need deep pockets :P

Another thing, GTR's are bathurst legends :P

Anyway thats my opinon, hope it helps you to make up your mind :P

gtr's arent terribly good street cars. Poor power delivery down low (and very little torque) compared to the gts-t's, be it the rb20 or rb25. They have much better response up top than the gts-t's do. They are more of a track car than anything

Yes GTR's arent much fun as an everyday car - and ive tried it!

Below 3000 rpm is quite boring also, but it just depends what you bought the car for. If you are somewhere where you can keep the revs up (track or whatever) you will notice the difference.

What do you want to do with your car...for a tidy street car i cant see many cars beating the GTR. Late model STIs and EVOs will eat it alive, but GTRs sound good, look good and go well.

That said, pods, PFC, N1s etc still represent and easy $6000 on mods, plus clutch and whatever suspension work your car has...so its still a lot of money on mods. So try and buy one with the basic mods...other wise they are pretty uninspiring in std form.

And if the car is screwed together well with good rubber (why spend 6k on mods only to use $125 tyres?) you wont have any traction problems at 250rwkws in a RWD GTST :)

I drive ny GTR as a daily driver and still are waiting for a WRX or EVO that will beat it .

with almost 300rwk's the gtr will almost beat top bikes { wil keep up with most } and in the wet will eat almost anything else {except 4wd porsche} for breakfast! :)

change down a gear :) there is a thing called a clutch and 5 speed box :P

Whoah hang on. So if im in first, and its laggy i need to change down a gear. We're talking about city driving, not driving on a track. If im doin 80km/hr i will drop it down to 2nd or 3rd. If im doin 30km/hr, i will NOT be dropping it into 1st. City driving - keep remembering

at 30kphr probably 4000rpm im getting 200rwkw's so i dont feel any lag :)

even from standstill and not dropping clutch, just easing on, lag might only be ther for a 1/2 a second and then wooooooooohooooooo hold on . give you an idea {hold onto your suunies or they will be in the back seat :P

in second gear, okay wouldnt be on to much boost but neither would the non gtr car

secondly, who ever would try dragging you from 30kphr {probably wouldnt really happen to much} I would still be in first any way and only need to put pedal down.

you guys have to remember that the original poster has a modded R32 GTS4 ie an AWD car with decent power, NOT a RWD GTSt, so you shouldnt base your comparisons between a GTR and a GTSt.

each to their own. I think the 2.6 is too small for anymore than 400hp at the crank. Stock turbos are pretty good. Im enjoying the stock car at the moment, but they lack power :)

I drive my car everyday, make over 300rwkw with GT-SS which spool up as quick if not quicker than stock turbos. I don't really have a problem driving it on the street in traffic, plenty of pull wherever i need it.

It isn't like a V8 where you have instant throttle response at 2000rpm. But I don't agree about 400hp at the crank being to much for the 2.6litre. I'd be making about 500hp at the crank with no problems daily driving.

I'm still thinking you might be a little upset at your choice of turbo for what you wanted it for, the turbo you went for was a little laggy for street, with something smaller like the GT-SS you may have been happier.

To the OP: if you don't want to go any faster than you already are, stick with your GTS4. If you want to go faster, the GTR has the potential.

Ya neve get to use all the power on the street...

I got a 209wkw GTR (low powered GTR compared to most) daliy driver and i still never get to use all the power!!!!

Still fun to drive- your are king of the road untill a porsche or bike want's a run!

I'm shure there are some GTR's for sale around you- where ever you are... just find one that has the level of mods, the money to support the car and who had the intrest in the car

This will give you an insite into how the car will be to live with and what work is needed...

GTR's are amazing value for money! porsche performance at the fraction of the cost...

If you want something cheeper get a wrx or stay with the GTS-T

I dont agree with this, i have a 34 gtr and until last november i had an 02 sti as well and i can assure you bog stock gtr will eat the sti everywhere . It may surprise you to know that the sti may have it on the gtr in the braking by a very small margin.

Remember you only need slight mods to get the gtr to run 11 second 1/4 mile, to that in the sti you need heaps of mods ..

Tommy, i dont agree with you that a gtr is not a good street car, as you know i enjoy driving mine, dont forget a turbo high performance car can never feel like a h/p N/A car .

Stock GTRs aren't very fast by today's standards...

206kw just isn't much power these days, not when a stock 6 cyl falcon makes 190kw and even a Hyundai Grandeur can muster up 194kw. A 10-15kw advantage isn't going to feel like a huge improvement, even considering the weight difference

Go in one with upgraded turbos, as your GTS4 has a non stock turbo its a bit unfair to compare to a GTR with stock turbos.

Try finding someone with a TO4Z or GTSS turbos. The answer will be quite obvious
