In my quest for subtle mods and to keep the defect man away I have stumbled across this side mount intercooler (SMIC) as a stock replacement. I have now fitted it and my boost has risen from 7psi to 8.5psi so it definatley flows better, its cooling ability is yet to be tested. It certainly looks impressive for a SMIC, must be that 100mm thick core! ;)

Here is a couple of pics comparing the different SMIC for the R33 GTST. The Stock R33 SMIC, Stock R34 SMIC and the Aftermarket R34 SMIC.

Notice the size of the air galleries, not at many as the Stock R34 SMIC but considerable larger. Maybe it will flow better, but not cool as well?? Time will tell.

If you want to avoid the FMIC then what about a water to air setup, like the PWR barrel cores?

After picking up a PWR radiator for the GTR I spoke to them about those barrel cores. . . . . Not really a feasable option, purely on the room aspect. . . . No way you could fit them to most newer road cars, especially the GTR.

Anyway, I just want to stick with the SMIC for as long as possible. I just get annoyed when people run out and get a big FMIC for there nearly stock cars. I am going to hold out for as long as possible. I am interested to see how it goes in the coming months at Willowbank and QR. . . :) Should be fun :P

I have a shroud which I had to modify a little to get it to fit but should make it work a whole lot more efficiently forcing all the air through it.

Out of interest, how does well does it fit in the front left guard area.. have you removed the panel that's in front of the wheel?

How much are they as well..

Wouldn't mind getting a R34 gt-t SMIC.. as really i don't need a huge one.. but would be nice to have..

It actually fits a little better than the Stock 34 one as it is about 10mm shorter so it isn't as much of a stretch to re-fit the inner guard. But it all bolts up exactly the same as the stock one, apart from the shroud you wouldn't even know its there ;). This has only given me an extra .5psi, if that, over the stock 34 cooler, so they are pretty good. I am assuming though that this should flow a few more KW once I start getting up there, but I am only aiming for 180ish rwkws atm. Thats heaps for what I want to do . . . . . Bring on QR!!!

I thought is may be a TRUST one, but the other TRUST one I have seen had TRUST stamped onto the top of it, and the ARC ones have that metal badge stuck on the top. . . . not sure what it is. It has a Nismo sticker on it but I have never heard of Nismo making these????

BTW, I will have a Stock 34 for sale now. . . . This

The only thing I am going to do it get a peice of aluminium and extend the front of the shroud right to the lip so it doesn't break catching too much air at high speed and flexing down too much.

Here is a pic showing the inner guard fitted (who would know. . . hehe) -

    • To be fair passengers who aren't silly and have been in proper fast cars have often been pretty impressed once you hit 4th gear
    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. That spreadsheet I mentioned? Maybe I could make back more than what the car's total costs thus far are, but the parts and all that is possibly a different story... Thanks for reading. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger. It's exciting that the option will be there to bring it over, however I have some plans with a shop that may end up keeping the car there longer, not sure. Coupled with the fact I want to move there and haven't solidified any path yet. So in a way, it feels like I'm in a limbo state that is uncertain; time will tell.
    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
