Taboo topic, I suppose i want to know what people know about everything from using them to, getting caught or simply finding your pops one in the Garage and seeing if the old one works. Do new ones work?. The Law, and can u use them or not and what states can or can't?. I know little about them but i know they're out there so do tell.

AFIAK:

1. They are almost useless against laser guns (most of the ones they use from the side of the road are laser), because by the time the detector picks up the laser, they have your speed! Laser doesn't give off much extraeneous light, like radar throws waves everwhere when its turned on. Radar detectors use these extra waves to alert you before you get to the radar unit

2. There are different types of radar bands that they use from state to state. You have to do some reasearch to make sure that you get the right one.

3. There are Radar detector detectors around, so some cop cars (which have detector detectors fitted) WILL KNOW that you have a detector. Ok in heavy traffic, but if they get you on your own, your gone!! If you think about it, you can't usually speed in heavy traffic anyway!

4. There is a huge fine (like $1000) I think for having one. I THINK that you can lose points off your licence too, but dont quote me on that, i could be wrong?

5. There are supposedly 'stealth' undetectable units around, but they always find a way to detect the stealth units, if they cant now, you can almost bet they will be able to in a years time.

6. They obviously wont work for 95% of fixed speed cameras cos they dont use radar or lidar (laser). You can get GPS units which basically warn you when you are approaching one though... But they are separate units to detectors. The GPS units are fully LEGAL.

Well worth buying one if you are into gadgets and flashing lights. But it's cheaper and safer to just drove slower :)

When I last spoke to him, he seemed to know what he was on about.

Yikes... I would strongly suggest against using a radar detector -- http://smh.com.au/articles/2004/09/23/1095651474289.html

The very last paragraph -

"Anyone brazen enough to drive with a radar detector fitted to their car will be in for a shock if they are caught. The fine has dropped from $1202 to $1175, but now attracts nine demerit points" :)

now radar jammers..

that could be a bit of fun.. :P

From what i understand radar jammers could interfear with plane radars aswell. Interfearing with plane radars = charge under the new terrorism laws. How does many years locked up sound for trying to avoid a speeding fine? :)

Yes Radar Detectors are Illegal in all states but W.A (soon to change :-( )

No detector can be detected by police if its off, but you can still be fined even if it is in your car.

Getting a hidden unit is the best way to avoid any problems.

Do not buy the Stealth Ninja as it si a waste of money, is not stealth and does not even work well.

If you want to defeat Laser (LIDAR) but a jammer/detector. They are about $400-800 and DO WORK.

Laser can only be jammed if you have small wide band laser emitters in your front grille, which confuse the the laser gun... And im sure they cost a fair bit more than $6-$800...

The prob with laser jamming, is that they KNOW straight away that you are jamming them because they cant get a reading. They will pull you over immediately and check your car for jammers then. and they arent hard to spot if they are two black emitters sitting in your grille... The problem is that laser speed measuring devices are so damn good! It only takes about 1/2 of a second to get a reading once they have focused on your car. and it hardly ever plays up. Jamming this signal would be a dead giveaway.

The only way to get around this is to run the jammer, if your detector goes off, SLOW DOWN, and then turn the jammer off, so that they can get a reading from you doing 60km/h

i think its all too much time and money... just drive a bit slower and you'll be right!

i had a radar detector in my beamer up until the other week before i sold the car,it was the best thing ive ever had,it saved me on so many occasions its not funny,i bought it with the car,the guy who sold me the car was an auto elec and he sells and fits them, they are not cheap, they cost $1800 fitted and they sit in behind the dash and you cant see it,to dc it you just pull a small jack plug from under the dash very easy to do.

the unit let off a few beeps if it was within 800m rangebut within 600m it was beeping constantly, within 400m it was going off its head, this unit is also connected to your radio so when your within 400m range it turns off your radio till the radar has past that metre mark, the only problem is now i have to be very carefull cause im used to driving a bit faster than normal,i highly recommend the unit and if anyone is interested in this unit they can send me a pm and ill foward you the guys business name and you can buzz him, like i said its not cheap but for the last 3 years im yet to lose a point.

Yeah there is a lot of difference. Do a search on google, and find out about the different bands of radar that they use in different countries/states.

Eg. Ka Band, K Band, X Band etc etc.. Not all detectors will pick up every band...

the differance is that the ones in the States and Canada are LEAGL and they are made to detect ALL t ypes of radar. They are alot more acurate and they will save you but you risk getting a larger fine for having one!

I am glad that they are Leagl in Canada!

Saved me MANY times!

thats total horse sh!t.

a detector is basicly a reciever, so it recieves signals, it doesnt transmit. therefore theres nothing to detect.

if you have a stealth detector, you would obvooisly turn it off before you pull over for the cop, just incase one cop sits in the car to listen for beeping and the other shoots the car with the radar from the out side.

no such thing as a radar detector detector!! a radar jammer is something differant.

There are laser jammers for around 400 dollars for sale in australia. They dont nessesarily know you jammed them because there are various error messages on a laser gun. Aparently australian lasers can detect jamming from devices overseas but there are others that have been design specifically for these lasers so they wont know it was you. There are various reason a lasser can give the operator an error signal. But if you are pulled over, the emitters are not that subtle if you know what they look like.

you can also get radar detectors that are built into the car so theres nothing to see and/confiscate. these are also anti detector detectors (vg2) but build in ones are more expensive. there are only a few models that are effective in detecting multinovas.

yes, laser detectors are pretty much usless, unless it can jam them too...

I knew someone who had one installed in his M5 BMW. It cost him a bit about $1500 with everything installed. It saved him a number of times. In the end though he did get nabed, not sure if that's because he didn't turn it off or because he just left it on the dash. All the police did though was take the device from him and warn him, didn't give him a fine neither.
