Meh, im putting my girl up for sale anyway - let the buyer deal with it.

I have noticed that it does it most often at low speed, in the first couple gears (when clutching), and when turning or just after turning. Maybe my power steering pump is sapping too much juice, or the aac screw needs to be adjusted to allow more revs...

I've heard rumours along the wire that a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) can also be the culprit for an idle stalling problem. How do I go about playing with and/or replacing this?

I'll run a search, cos I know that's normally people's first answer (and it's lots of help, by the way... NOT!)

I might be on the trail to finally finding the gremlin. Have received reports that the TPS wouldn't be responsible for all of the things that I'm experiencing. It's more attributable to a sticking throttle body butterfly than a TPS.

So the next step (in this epic saga) is to remove the throttle body, and clean it like nobody's business...

I'll be sure to report in with the results - stay tuned.

Have you tried using another AFM I had this problem after installing the new Turbo was shitting me to tears trying to save it at lights all the time, I have a mate who owns a skyline and he just put a RB25 in his 4 door so weee spare AFM for the 20 anyway we put it on and presto fixed I dont get much stalling now but I think the rest just means a good tune

Ok guys i know how to fix this issue.

I tried everything to fix this problem on my R32

What i did was:

- Changed TPS

- Cleaned ACC valve

- Changed AAC valve

- Cleaned AFM

- Changed AFM (tested with RED top and SILVER top engines)

- Changed fuel filter

- Changed oil

- Played around with the idle screw

- Cleaned out throttle body+butterfly

- Cleaned plugs and re-set em

- Checked for vacume leak

NONE of this worked at all!!!, i was spewing.

But finally i was looking around the engine bay and spotted the

COLD START SOLENOID.

I got a new Cold Start Solenoid from my mechanic and it was fixed!!!!!

Finally!!!!!.

It doesnt hunt for revs anymore, and it doesnt idle high.

It purrs like a kitten.

PS: I talked to my mechanic and he said that skylines engines are pretty prone to stuffing up the Cold Start Solenoid.

This would be ur problem too. Id start there ASAP cos you dont wana go shitten around trying stuff that dont work, like i did.

Hopes this helps you guys,

Matt

  • 2 weeks later...

I've fixed the stalling problem!!!

It was the blow off valve. Which is very strange, cos the blow off valve I had on it was the Greddy Type S, which was being plumbed back just like the stock one. Maybe it was blowing-off too early, too late, too much, too little, too who f*cken knows...

The good news is she's not stalling anymore, and I'm smiling again!

The cold start solenoid is located under the intake plume cross over pipe (between the intake and the rocker cover) you may need to push some wires/pipes out of the way. Its a square thing with tubes going into it.

I got a brand new one from japan through my mechanic that cost $190. could try and get a second hand one but usually they are f**ked with the same problem

Cheers R32FOURDOOR..

I Didn't get chance to check forum on weekend, so in the mean time, I did something else.

I reset my computer by disconnecting the battery and pressing the brake a few times (to clear any remaining volts) then plugged it back in... I couldn't tell if it solved the cold start problem, but it doesn't seem to be rev hunting at idle anymore.. it's actually quite smooth...

    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
    • Dort sounds above 3k rpm are dorty 🤣 I might krinkle black the alloy 🤔
    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
