Hi all

I have a look under the half closed bonnet of my R34 and noticed that the bonnet almost shuts off all the air supply to the snorkel to the stock airbox.

ie. the front end of the bonnet kind of curls over the opening of the snorkel. By the looks of things, the snorkel is drawing air from the sides instead of directly the front.

Even at speed I dont think that the air is forced or rammed into the airbox in anyway, but rather the airbox itself is simply sucking air.

Is this how they were designed? pretty crap in my opinion.

I opened up the airbox and found no other air source! everythnig comes from the snorkel.

^^ wouldn't personally do that.. don't see how the air is going to be any better..

it's not about the air being "rammed" into the stock airbox..

it's about providing the airbox with a cool supply of fresh air.. I think you'll find the design is quite good and will draw cleaner, cooler air than a pod with no box...

why is the title " R33 R33 Airbox," when you've got an R34...

anyways.. as the turbo spools up, it's gonna suck in as much air as it can get it's hands on.. short of feeding it air from near the front bumper I don't get how the air is going to be any better..

I would also like to know, for a r33..

Seriously, if you have a look, theres no way air can get thru the snorkle.. Its like the bonnet, plus radiator support thingy blocks it..

I have asked the question on the net once, but ppl just said it does.. But im sure the enginerrs would have tested it when building the cars..

Everyones like, it goes thru the grill.. but its only a small gap..

anyone got diagrams or anything??

Coz im using snorkle to feed air into my heatshield pod box mr_crust made..

    • I am using Motec M150.  I am not working on the car myself actually.  My workshop is giving all these info, they are quite reputable in the industry and are very familiar with Motec and RBs and have done a few big setups with VCam and single turbo on RBs.  In fact, they built and tuned my engine from day one.  But they are stumped with my engine at the moment and cannot work out how come the compression is so low with the VCam. They told me that they have now swapped in some Kelford cams (without the VCam) and can achieve around 130psi compression and the low end torque is better, but now the engine is doughy as.  It boosts and peaks at more than 1000rpm slower, with twin HKS GTIII RS, it doesn't get full boost until over 5000rpm. I have always thought the VCam was a bit disappointing at the low rpm. To a point I had to ride the clutch a fair bit to get up a small hill from stand still.  That was when I had a clutch.  Now changing to a 8HP, I don't have that luxury and this problem has become a major issue. I am beginning to think the VCam never work since the day it was installed.  Maybe it was just sitting at the most advanced point, that is why it went good at top end but very ordinary at the bottom.  Therefore, with the help of the Holinger 6 speed and paddle shift, as long as it was moving, it drove pretty good.
    • yeah, there's a country that recently started importing Skylines, I blame them.
    • I don't have a printer, but could at least attempt to make a printable model.
