this arvo after getting out of my car, i can pick up a strong fuel smell, pop the bonnet and nothing.

but found that it was coming from the fuel cap, open it to check if its on tight and it is.

sounds stupid cuz thats where u put fuel in but i shouldnt be able to smell from just sniffing outside my window, i fuel up like 5 days ago without any spills

need a new cap or just seal? kinda concerned with it comes to smelling petrol in a car.

has any1 had this prob before?

I have had it on a previous car. The internals in the fuel cap had broken and it did the same thing.

When you go to fill up on a pretty empty tank, are you getting much air expel when you remove the cap? Usually a good sign if you don't that the cap isnt sealing properly. Not uncommon for caps to be shagged after so many years of use.

With most imported cars when they come in for compliance, the original fuel filler neck is removed and a generic Nissan Cap and filler added especially around 1995 to 1998 complied cars. (meaning they gut the original pipe and glue in the Aust standard one inside the original pipe). The only option is to replace the fuel filler neck, and filler and cap with the factory original. My car has similiar charcastics to what you are describing, but mine only occurs after track days or motorkhana's with high speed cornering when fuel spill's everywhere.
