Single Turbo Skylines

Hi Leewah, Who did the turbo customizing? Is that your handy work? Very individual path, when the perfect turbo isnt available, just make one! Did you machine an original Garrett T88 to a size suitable for your needs? or did you rebuild a T78?

The customising of the turbo was suggested by a friend of Ice Performance, Ben at Racepace Motorsport in Bayswater.

When I decided that I was going to try building a monster GTR (I was aiming at 400Kw @ all 4s), I was contemplating whether I work with twin 2835s or a large single turbo. As I posted earlier, the cost of a single setup was so much more appealing than a twin setup and so the single was the choice.

Looking for 400Kw at the wheels is no easy feat and what's worse was that when my engine was originally prepped, it was only bored out to one oversize which meant that engine capacity didn't increase by all that much. I believe that my engine is now around the 2605cc mark rather than the 2557cc or whatever the stock engine is. Considering the rather small capacity engine and the amount of reliable power I wanted, going for a large single turbo would mean a serious case of lag due to less air flow than what could be achieved out of say a RB30 bottom end. I had seen Ben's RPMGTR run with the same size turbo as what I currently have but with a larger compressor wheel and exhuast housing. Due to size of his engine, the lag wasn't so bad but I was assured that it would be shockingly bad with my smaller engine. With this in mind, I wanted a turbo which could produce more power than I wanted which assured reliability but also a turbo which would spool at an acceptable RPM and be drivable everyday.

I chose to go with the same turbo which the RPMGTR was using at the time with a smaller compressor wheel and also an exhaust housing which was smaller to increase the pressure of airflow which meant that lag was less of an issue than if I went with off the shelf gear. This was also "assured" through some calculations we made from a turbo calculator which I found. Ben organised the turbo and exhaust housing from a Garrett supplier with the agreed specs and it arrived within 2 weeks of ordering. The price was also much cheaper than if I had ordered a true T88 and T78 exhaust housing.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the progress of the car. It's now produced 375rwkw@19 psi on a dyno dynamics dyno and I feel that my engine can handle around the 25psi mark. Right now the only thing stopping me from boosting the pressure further is the fuel system which was erroneously installed by Speed Technology. It seems that the return line from the fuel tail to the surge tank they supplied was too small to handle fuel returning back to the tank and was starving the 2nd external Bosch pump to overheat and die. We're still working on this issue and hope to have it resolved very soon.

Hope this sheds some clarity on my GTR.
