A smaller than expected turnout greeted us for the second annual Nissan Datsun Drag Challenge. Melbourne has had a streak of hot weather of late and Saturday was no different with the mercury climbing past 30 degrees. This didn’t detract the quicker cars with many strong numbers run.

One standout was Mark Waiunhouf’s Nissan 200SX. The tough looking S14a is powered by an RB25/30 combo that’s putting out a cool 700 odd horsepower and is backed by an RB25 5-speed gearbox. Weighing in at over 3000lbs, Mark was in the 10s all day for a best of 10.59/140.

Keir Wilson has quite a reputation when it comes to quick GT-R’s. The R32 is a favourite among many with its super stock looks and killer performance. Keir ran 9.06/158 in eliminations before going an even quicker 8.99/159 on drag radials but unfortunately the car suffered an engine failure in the braking area.

Quick VL’s on the day included Adam Donehue’s RB25 powered Commodore. The car made strong power on the dyno beforehand but was suffering from blow by on his first pass of 10.32/132 and forcing Adam to pack up for the day. John Bresciani had ‘PANNIC’ out once again and found it hard work putting power down through its small 28x9-inch tyres. John ran a very skatey 9.95/147 before improving the BT1 to a 9.33/149 during eliminations. The Rajab Racing Calais took out the B1 quick class and was pretty consistent all day for a best of 8.75/154 during eliminations. Chopa Trtovac’s metallic pink Calais also ran a solo pass of 9.50/146.

Benny Kashima’s High End Racing S14 also ran hard all day in the 10-second zone for a 10.78/131 while Ben Winstone’s ‘DAT13B’ Datsun 1200 ran a personal best of 11.66/119, not bad considering Ben is yet to fit an intercooler to the car. Ben also ran his R32 GT-R for a 12.4-second pass.
