Mine sits around 4 in the morning for warm up. Once the oil gets to 80-90*C it will then drop down to around 2 i think. after a long day it will idle under the first bar (Not the zero bar obiously). I have been told that when its low after a long day, its ok because oil is all over your engine and doesnt need to be pumped at high pressure.

Other wise the guage is stuffed. =) See a mechanic to know when your oil pump is on its way.

bye

interesting post guys. My 32 GTR and one of my best mates with same car, have totally inconsistent readings.

I usually have 4 on warm cruise, but some times after idle ( at lights etc) it barely makes 2. I get a bit concerned and stare at it, then 10 seconds later its 4. ( irrelevant of revs )

Never the same each day.

We have come to the conclusion that the standard guages are a bit dodge.

The best way to put your mind at rest is to put in an aftermarket guage.

I have a Greddy one on the way, will tell u how it goes.

Dont sweat, it may just be the guage.

thanx for your input guys!

started up my car this morning and the oil pressure was up to bloody 6. then it drops back to around 3. Then during hot times in the afternoon after ive been driving it, it sits at just above 1. it got me worried coz someone was telling me basically my engine is stuffed and a rebuild is needed. but i dont see any smoke or nothing coming out of the zorst, also the engine runs really smoothly without any miss firing or undue noise. so i guess its all right then.

getting the car checked out next week, so ill know for sure. at the mean time, i was told 1 bar is the low end of ok zone, as long as the oil pressure light is not on. again, as someone said, it could be the sensor or gauge, or even bad oil.

any way, ill let u guys know. cheers!

Before you rush off & start replacing anything do a search for oil pressure - there are about a bazillion posts on the subject.

A couple of things:

The oil pressure will always be higher on a cold engine thatn on a warm one because the oil has a higher viscosity when cold.

The oil pressure sender unit on the Nissans is known to be rubbish. It will send erratic pressure readings to the gauge. Hence before you get anything removed check the pressure sender unit either by substituting it with a known good one or by getting a mechanical gauge put on the car by your mechanic as a test.

The overwhelming probability is that the send unit is stuffed & the engine is fine. It will cost maybe a couple of hundred dollars if you want to replace the sender unit, but most people don't even bother doing so.

personally i would never go by a factory fittef oil pressure gauge, for one skylines always seem to have problems with them, just save a lil money mate an get a fairly good quility aftermarket oil pressure gauge. Depending on brand/ size, ur looking around 80- 140 bucks.

A lot of the Oil Pressure Gauges on GT-Rs are faulty. Mine sits on just under 3 most of the time but some days it sits under 2. Restart Car and it is back up to just under 3.

Also depends on the Oil you use. The Full Synthetic Oil will usually make the reading a bit lower.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
