abcent
one of my best mates just recently had to fix the gearbox in his series 1 R33 gts-t. I rang around everywhere looking for a secondhand box to replace his stuffed one. why are people asking stupid prices for secondhand box's?? I mean really $1500 is the average price of a secondhand box, to which no-one can actually asure you of its condition 100%. so after many phone calls, a phone call was made that put him onto competition gearbox's (i think that was the name) in Melbourne, who rebulit his gearbox for only $1400. This gearbox that was rebuilt, couldnt even select first or second gear. Both those gears were completely replaced, hubs a all, aswell as 4th gear hub too. "one of the worst 33 box's he's seen" he was told. So if a gearbox in such poor condition can be rebuilt at a cheper price than a secondhand item, surely this shows people are putting too much value on a 33 box (series 1 or 2...there the same). the average rebuild for a crunching gear or something would be even less dollars i'd imagine. so anyone looking round at a secondhand box as the cheaper option to fixing your current one, definatly look into rebuilding, as it will probably be cheaper, an you can be sure of its actual condition afterwards. all of a sudden, just because theres more r33's around, the price of there parts are all jacked up...dont seem fair...but thats life i guess, ultimatly you choose wheather you pay the high prices or not. (note: we replaced the gearbox with the car up on jack stands in a garage, although it can be done....looking back I would have rathered payed $100-$150 to have someone else do it....lol) cheers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/111560-why-are-people-asking-so-much/ Share on other sites
Links
I think one of the main reasons is because alot of track and drift people are using them.. R33 gearboxes are viewed as quite strong and there for people like to use them.. 5LEEPER
yeah its all about the damand for them. almost every tom dick and harry with a S13 or r32 with decent amount of power and drives there car hard (or drifts it). is after an Rb25box they are quite strong....and sinse many people are after them....they can jack the prices up and people will pay them Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/111560-why-are-people-asking-so-much/#findComment-2057794 Share on other sites
Sydneykid
Sure if you have one rebuild it. But that's not what is forcing the prices up, it's the guys that DON'T have one, who need one, that is causing the demand to exceed the supply and thats' what pushes the prices up. cheers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/111560-why-are-people-asking-so-much/#findComment-2057797 Share on other sites

Seeing some people advertising them for more than $1500. I think round the $1000 is more around what there 'actually' worth, but as mentioned, only takes a few buyers to pay the higher prices.....an whats the prices go up an up. hopefully, being theres not a great deal of drifting around in Vic for the next 12months or more, the prices of things like this will drop with less demand. If people are prepaired to pay that much, they arent overpriced. As Sydneykid said, its all about supply and demand. If i could be bothered i'd draw you a diagram as i just left my economics class... It doesnt matter what an item is 'worth', whatever someone is willing to pay is how much the item will cost. MYRB30
$1500 dollars to rebuild a rb25 gearbox? With new gears? I'd like to get that done to mine. I am a mechanic, at a Nissan dealership (at the time) when I rebuilt my gearbox. Try over $1000 dollars just for all the bearings, at mates rates. You cant get gears for under $300, and syncros's start round $100. If I could have got my hands on a box for $1500 I wouldn't have been able to get the cash fast enough. The stress alone of checking and assembling a gearbox is worth that sort of money! (Especially a tight tolerance box like the rb25) I dare say your mates box was repaired, not rebuilt. There is quite a big difference. Another point, its quite possible that a factory assembled second-hand gearbox is going to be friendlier and better in the long run than a half assed repaired box. No one builds things as well as the crew at nissan! Links
I think it's very expensive.. almost worth getting a 3,200 brand new box.. and reco'ing and selling off your old one.. When reco'ing the box however - I doubt your gonna be replacing too many gears would you unless you've absolutely fcuked it..? out of interest.. what exactly happened to it btw - what was he doing.. FATAZZ
over $1000 worth of bits and pieces have already gone into my auto box RE4RO1A. in the end im looking at $3000 to rebuild my box.maybe more not standard parts though. IMO unless you buy a BRAND NEW box, your just buying someone elses problem. i blame the vl's....they save so much on their crappy shells, they can afford to pay top dollar for a rb25 g/box and engines. abcent
lets just say that a lot of the time the front wheels tend to do a lot less kms than the rear..... an not all the gears were replaced, only first & second gears, a few syncros, an 3 gear hubs. no point replacing stuff that doesnt need to be. not that it matters, but both myself and my freind are mechanics & priced up the rebuild kits through nissan at employee prices, an yeah, it was expensive.....
