hey all,

Begining to tire of my 94gtst's continues problems and I am considering selling it. My mate has a 98 model wrx which is pretty standard apart from a brass button clutch, full exhaust and stereo. Just a few minor things like aftermarket suspension, 18 inch simmons blah blah.

The question I have is how do they compare to a r33 skyline? Ive been in it and to be honest it seems quicker than my car. How reliable are they engine wise? Iknow that the gearboxes etc are not that strong.

Blown a motor in my 94, replaced that. Lost my lic in it a while back. Now im having electrical problems.

Any thoughts?

Anyone jumped the fence and can comment from a owners point of veiw?

thanks

you lose your licence in your 33 but you want a faster car ? that will fix the problem hahaha. My brother had that problem with his v8 commodore and he now drives a 83 corolla. Problem solved.

That was a fair while ago that I lost my lic.

The car has a front mount, pod, cat-back 3.25 inch exhaust, exedy brass button clutch, suspension work.

It is just not generating any power above 5000rpm. Got a sloppy idle.

I just had an exhaust leak fixed and it runs a bit better but. Its starting to piss me off.

My mates rex is starting to look tempting unless i can fix this f**king thing.

My wife has an 05 WRX (stock) and I have a series 1 R33 with the following mods:

3" turbo back zaust

FMIC

Unifilter POD

turbotech boost controller

PFC

High-flow R34 turbo @ ~ 1bar

The 33 is soooooo much more fun to drive than the WRX and since the PFC was installed and tuned it feels a shitload quicker than the rex as well.

IMHO, stick with the skyline and get the issues sorted. Once you have it running well and add a few select mods, you will be much happier than with a WRX.

Before you had the pfc, did it still feel quicker?

Me and him had a little bit of a highway entrance tussle when i had my old motor. I only had the pod, and 3.25 inch catback exhaust then. He completely smashed me with his stock 98 wrx. Im guessing part of the reason is because he hasnt got a speed cut, so im guessing a fuel cut is absent aswell. Have to admit Ive never liked my car that much since then.

So maybye a better question to ask you guys is,

Give me an example of how you dominated over a rex in your 33 gtst?

Might help me learn to love my car again! lol

Yes, but not to the extent it does now. I had an SAFC2 before the powerFC and it was really flat all the way to 5000rpm but then went like a rocket from there to redline.

Now it pulls like a 14 year old schoolboy all the way through the rev range.

hahahh. oh ok.

Hey i just got done replacing spark plugs.

Im fairly sure they are the wrong ones unless the computer needs to adjust to them, im not sure.

They are bosch fr8dcx with a 1.1 gap. Are they the wrong ones? the guy who i bought them off looked in the book. Unless he has given me gtr ones?

Car is detonating if i even try to put the boot in now.

I wouldn’t waste my time with a wrx I went thru the same thing of wanting one, but my car was in tip top condition. I had 230rwkw and never ever seen a wrx in front of me. Had fmic, exhaust, pod, 13psi stock ECU ect..

Get your car to a performance / mechanics shop mate and let them have a look at it (Get some advise where to go who knows there stuff). Don’t bother with bosh plugs... go with NGK Iridium (BKR5EIX-11 correct me if I’m wrong) plug and gap them to 0.8mm. Your car may have all sorts of problems because it sounds like your not really mechanically minded (no offence). There could be an easy fix problem but we can guess all day so take it in somewhere mate and get her checked out.

Cheers,

Alex.

230kw with the stock ecu..... howd you do that ?

get the plugs out of there. go and buy some NGK BCPR6ES or BCPR6ES-11 and gap them to 0.8mm bung them in and then check the base timing.

The poor idle is most probably related to the base timing, My guess is the bolts on the CAS are probably loose, and has let the timing slip.

Once the timing is set go place a mark on the CAS and the front timing cover for refference in the future.

You have a FMIC and no way of adjusting the fuel and ignition map?

I don't know who gives you such crap advice on what has been done to your car but, you need to do more time looking through here to save yourself totally unnecessary pain;

good luck mate

or you could rebuild the gts-t. redo the electronics. re-do hoses etc. new suspension. give it a paint job and it will feel brand new. mayb some series 2 seats or something. even if you buy a wrx... eventualy youll run into the same problems... so just fix what ya got and make it new

my 2 cents

I think you'll have a hard time selling it if it's running like a bag of shit. someone will buy it off you for cheap, spend $500 bucks on it and have a great car. take it to someone who knows what they're doing. it will be worth your money.

jezzerr is on the money

no one will buy it if they have test drove a few nice ones

fix yours properly leak down test timing belt injector clean you know champ tlc

wat mods do you have

How many Kms has it done, a friend of mine has a S1 R33 and it had done about 89,000 and he bit the bullet and got the 100,000 Kms service done and made a HUGE differance to how his car ran, he then added a PFC about 3 weeks later and it felt like a new car. He now beats all standard WRXs and he is now looking at suspension and a turbo upgrade.

Keep the Line dont go to a WRX as they have just as many problems as skylines.

I have raced a few ranging from 99-03 and havent lost a race. Stayed with a 05 STI aswell. Dont sell the line dude, fix your problems and enjoy it!

thanks a lot guys,

Yeah it is just me trying to save a bit of coin and use the forums to pinpoint the dramas and fix it cheap, as I have spent 5k on new motor etc in the last couple of months. Also my dad is a mechanic and has his own business but even he is ready to incinerate it with me. But im thinking of taking it to 'garage hiramitsu' on the Gold Coast as apparently they are quite good.

Im sure if it ran like it used to with the old motor and a few more mods and the 2k stereo ive got waiting to go in id love it again. Its just at the moment i look at it and cringe because it is sending me broke! lol

James,

Car has a hybrid front mount, k and n pod, 3.25 inch exhaust(only cat-back), exedy brass button clutch, kyb mountain climb struts and some sort of jap springs-poly'castor rod bushings, 400 r front bar, gtr sideskirts-pods-boot spoiler, 350z rims,

Car is brand new windscreen to the front panels and bonet and headlights, front bar. Thats another reason i do like the car. Ill have to get some pics up. Not being biast, but looks wise it is one of the better 33's ive seen on the Gold Coast

Thanks guys I was considering buying a rex?! what an idiot!

    • Actually,  just remembered there should be info in the threads (somewhere) about swapping to a manual steering rack and deleting power steering all together.
    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
