lets have a civil debate about this and try to think outside the RB world.

both an R33 series 1, 1.5 or 2 can be had for about $15K

manual soarers are now around $15K also.

r33 gtst weighs what.. 1390kg?

soarer weighs 1530kg with 10L of fuel and empty boot and no spare. (found this on a web site)

both come with LSD and a tough 5 speed box.

skyline = 187kw

soarer = 206kw (apparently)

both inline 6's that like to rev.

RB's have oil control problems in extreme conditions.

1jz doesn't seem that have that.

1jz has a toyota tough bottom end which cops a fair bit more than the rb does before quiting.

1jz head is designed by yamaha and is seen as an upgrade for the 2jz 3L bottom end (so it's pretty damn good)

not sure on stock 1/4 mile times on either car.

now..

the weight (and I guess possibly looks) is the downside of the big toyota.

and I'm not sure how much more power it needs to make the same 1/4 time as an r33 gtst.

I'm sure there is some sort of calculation.

anyway, I'm assuming this is going to be a one sided arguement on this forum but some people might take off there stove top glasses and look outside to see there are other things around..

lets get some decent posts here as to why you think one is better than the other.

I hazard a guess that about 90% or more of the skylines here never see a drag strip or circuit so they are pretty much street only.

so does the soarer then win over the r33?

does the extra power and torque of the 1jz win over the more nimble r33 with less power and torque?

discuss

Manual SOARER?

Do they come in Manual?

never seen 1!

My friend has a Cressida with 1jz in it, its a soarer engine, it goes hard, but then again, wasnt hard as my previous 300zx stock power wise, bit similar to skyline!

so if a 1jz in a soarer with that much of weigh. hmmmm...skyline would have had it.

I assumed soarer is heavier than Cressida?

from what i know (please correct me if you disagree)

turbos in the 1jz will handle ~16psi reliably

turbo in the rb25 will handle ~12psi reliably

1jz stock bottom end will handle in excess of 300kw

rb25 stock bottom end limit is around 280-300

for very similar mods, you will extract more power from the toyota and it will be stronger, although 1jz in an auto soarer isn't particularly inspiring in my opinion. but in manual chaser format... :)

as much as i love nissans, you gotta respect the strength of the toyota.

having said all that, if given the choice of a soarer or a skyline, i'd take the skyline any day of the week.

continue debate

no way, non vvt 1jz's have always been 206kw - any number of HPI issues will say this...the vvt version has more torque and probably more power but not quoted due to the 206kw gentlemens agreement between the manufacturers for max power in japan

I testdrove an auto 1j soarer when looking at a r33, the soarers more of a cruiser - its super quiet inside, a/c is excellent, visability great, really comfortable ride, the auto was fantastic, and seemed to have a higher build quality than the nissan BUT the skylines feel more livelier - eg: brakes and steering feel muddy with the soarer, and they have friggin massive doors- must weigh like 200kgs each!! I was also disappointed in the 1jz but i think if it lost the auto and the 1600 or so kg it had to tow around it would be a great car. No comment on the manual as i didn't drive one but from memory when driven right they run a 14.0 sec quarter so thats quicker than a stock r33 manual by a long shot.

Manual soarers dont have the great skyline 5 speed, but the r154a isn't a bad box, and i believe the lsd in the soarers is hell expensive to replace if things go bad. Oh and brakes are smaller than the r33 (2 piston fronts, single piston rears i think????)

i dont think you can compare them against each other, the engines possibly, the cars no. the arguement of oil related problems in the RB really only applies to track cars, how many rbs that are street driven within normal power outputs have failures due to oil starvation/flow in the head?

the skyline is an agile young go getter sportscar with fairly nice handling, power, response, brakes, box, interior and great looks. overall good sorted package

the soarer is an auto (most likely) powerful but lazy grandpa couch car. its luxurious and has tons of crap inside. its also much larger and heavier. it would handle i expect like a boat.

the skyline would nail it (i would expect)

1jz-gte no doubt in my mind.

but they are not in a nibble car.. therefore R32 gts-t for the win.

I'd considered a 1jz-gte into an r32 .. but too much stuffing around.

GTST - you fail to point out that manual soarers are very rare, maybe 1 in 20 are manual. Its not really applicable to talk about something that is not that readily available.

    • Mate you saved be from dying in the Perth summer. AC wasn't changing direction and just going into diagnostics mode fixed it. You're a legend and I would shout you a beer if I could!
    • Unfortunately effort gone to waste, you will have substantial issues with how the manifold and wastegate have been integrated. You would be so much better off with a modified stock manifold like this: https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25detexgatedmanifold/   OR literally just getting a off the shelf Sinco or 6Boost manifold as myself and others have mentioned.
    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
