Some do and some don't...I believe it was an option from the factory rather than std (my 95 series 1.5 doesn't have it).

If you pop the bonnet and there is no cube shaped device attached to the passenger side firewall of the engine bay then you don't have it.

Will try and get a pic for you....

If it does someone could have disabled it, Check the fuses and the engine bay and there should be a fuse that says something alone the line of tracktion or ABS. Also dont rely on ABS for breaking because not many ppl know this but ABS is to help with turning, so if you find someone pulles out in front of you instead of just slamming on the brakes turn away from them also. Just my 2c

Ummm no Chris it is there to help with braking for two reasons. When a car without ABS locks up the tyres at a particular speed it will take longer to stop than a car that is braking hard but the tyres aren't locked up. Before ABS this was left upto the driver to modulate the pressure on the brake pedal so that he or she is still braking as hard as possible but the tyre isn't locked up. As this skill is not taught to people the only time they find out is when they need it the most and by then it is too late. ABS simply takes the driver out of this equation and allows the car to stop in the shortest possible distance.

The 2nd reason for ABS is the one you were trying to get at. When a car is emergency braking with its tyres locked up, the tyres have no grip in order for the driver to be able to take action to avoid a collision. Whereas with ABS (or with the driver able to modulate the brake pedal without ABS) the tyres have enough grip for the driver to be able to steer around an object.

I hope this clears it up for you....

I havent checked to see if I have said cube, but when a 4wd pulled out infront of me one night, and I stamped on the brakes the whole car shutted and there was no smoke, so I gather it has abs

1994 S1 R33

see now my car did something like that earlier when i was driving down the hwy a tad fast... but thats another story... and had to brake...

hrm i think i may check this out sooner than home...

thanks for the info and the pics it helps heaps

:P :P

Everyone should know whether they have ABS or not, and also be able to tell the difference between warped rotors and having ABS!

As a test, on an empty road accelerate to 80kmph and then slam your foot on the brakes as hard as you can. If your wheels lock up you dont have ABS, if they make a weird grinding noise and you can still maneuvre with the steering wheel then you have it! After you're used to it it will feel weird driving a car without it :)

Incidentally, the stopping power of ABS has saved me twice, once on gravel when a random cow jumped out in front of me, and the second when I wasnt paying attention and nearly drove straight through an intersection!

just remember... ABS can be worse when on soft surfaces, eg sand.

when you brake on sand, if the brakes lock it digs into the sand and pulls you to a stop.

with ABS it stops the wheels locking, and you continue to go over the sand, stopping at a greater distance than if you got bogged down in the sand from locking up :)

well i was doing EDITED and when it came time to slow down i didnt slam my foot down but i had to brake pretty hard cause there was a car close. they didnt lock but they made a weird sound like grinding and then i stopped. but when the old bat almost took me out and i slammed them on they locked up...andthat was doing about 70kms and slamming brakes on...

i havent looked yet because i keep forgetting ...

    • Each province differs a bit but we only do mandatory vehicle inspections here for heavy vehicles (Think Ford F350 and up). Those inspections are done by mechanics that are approved by the government. Besides that, it's a free for all as long as the car looks stock.  I asked because I love seeing how engineering differs from country to country. Here in Canada, all designs must be stamped and signed before they can be brought to fruition. (I.E Bridges, structures, Electrical panels, machines, literally everything shy of a wooden table) This can only be done by a professional engineer or professional engineering technologist. Both are protected titles, but the latter having more of a limited scope in what they can stamp. To become a professional engineer, you must complete a 4-5 year bachelors degree in your field of engineering, be part of an engineering order and undergo 4 years of apprenticeship, testing and mandatory continues education. Same story for engineering technologists, but a 3 year associates degree in some form of engineering technology will suffice. If you do not comply, or pretend you're an engineer or technologist, off to jail you go. If you stamp a design that fails, off to jail you go. If you stamp a design that fails and kills someone (I.E Bridge collapse) Off to jail you go for a very long time, your family will be ridiculed on the news, neighbours will surround your home with pitch forks and your dog will disown you.  Same for specialised trades... Example Electricians must undergo 1.5 years of post high school education, 4 years of apprenticeship, testing and hold proper licences. It's for the best, but then we also wonder why we're so short on engineers and tradesmen haha
    • Not currently, I'm at the school where we teach people to build bridges and other fun things that involve making, or breaking things
    • I have a friend who has used Chequered Tuning and CMS. Went to CMS when Chequered had a long wait time which is kind of the norm (for good reason). Was very happy - I'm pretty sure the very simple thing you're asking will be simple.
    • lol that caught up a year quickly! good to see you on the track again, hoping to do it myself one day
    • Nah he was mega organised, the sort of guy that put (almost) every tool back every day, it made trying to work out where things were up to possible.  My shed needs a swedish death clean, I would have >20 part done jobs, its particularly hard to collect all required parts for a job ahead of time when you can't just pop into a shop and grab things
