hey guys

I spent last night searching and reading up, but couldn't find any advice that is critical in how to remove the starter motor so I have a few questions to ask.

First of all what does the starter motor look like? Has anyone got a pic?

Where is it located?

I heard its two bolts, is it hard to remove?

What kind of tools will I need?

And when it comes to pulling apart the starter motor for a bit of cleaning, how do I go about that business?

What kind of grease and oil should I use?

cheers guys

of the top of my head you need 14mm ring or open ended spanner for the housing bolts 12mm or 13mm for the battery terminal on the starter motor

its located under the intake manifold on the drivers side

its a piece of piss

now why are you removing starter whats wrong with it??

why do you need to clean and grease it ??

i would just buy a new cheep nock off starer comes with two year warranty for 100 bucks

thanks for the reply

well on cold starts i get that common screeching sound in which my mechanic told me that the starter motor is cranking a lil bit more when I start the car so i get that sound.

through all the threads I've read I just wanted to see if I could pull it out and give it a clean and lube and see if that will solve the problem. If it doesn't then I will for sure get a replacement.

Speaking of which, are there any starter motors that are interchangable on an series 1 rb25det? I heard the rb30 VL starter motor fits.

cheers

nope

i originally thought it was the belts and recently changed them 2 weeks ago

the mech said it wasnt the belts and found it to be the starter motor

anyone have info on what kind of oil and grease to use on the starter motor?

anyone have pics of a starter motor disassembled?

you've got to get under the car for this. drive it up some ramps.. it'll take you around 5mins to get it off once you're under there. im pretty sure theyre 3x 14mm bolts and you could get a rachet with a medium sized extension under there.

we use bearing grease just plain old bearing grease on the gear set off the reduction

although your noise sounds like drive slippage on the starter which is cheaper and less troublesome to replace instead of trying to rebuild

i very much doubt greasing will fix your problem

but unless i hear noise i could be mistaken

the noise is very high pitched screech

similar to that of when u turn the ignition to start while the engine is still running

but when the car is warm and i start it again sometimes the sound wouldnt happen at all, so it pretty much only happens on cold starts

ok i got it on the ramp the other day to have a look

i can clearly see the bottom bolt

but i cant find the other bolts?

i assume they are on top but it looks really hard to get access to with all these hoses and the intake cylinders in the way. It also is hooked up to something from the front end? Do i jus pull these off? Like the plugs etc.

well 2 things...first disconnect the battery the main positive wire from the battery goes to the starter and you can't afford to have it short out on anything.

the second bolt will be above the starter motor, so follow the body of the motor around and you will come to it. I haven't done a gtst but I am 99% sure it is only 2 bolts. THe top one can be tricky a stubby ratchet or even better stubby ratchet spanner will make it heaps easier.

Like Duncan said disconect the + from your battery, otherwise you will have fireworks . There is only 2 bolts that hold the starter on the bellhousing, the one you can see and the other is about 180 degrees ( on the top ) . Its not as hard as is on the GTR Duncan , actualy very easy to get even with a socket and extension ( 14 mm heads ) from the top .

Before you undo the 2 starter bolts, undo the top first, undo the electrical connection to it.

    • I would again like too thank Matt for his help in me sourcing the detachable hard top for the little red car, without Matt's assistance in inspecting it and locking it down, I can guarantee it would have sold before I could get up to see it,  and as that was the only available NC hardtop in Australia, I consider myself extremely lucky on multiple levels To say I'm more that happy would be an understatement And, it is 100% water tight, I drove through torrential rain coming back south, and by torrential, they type of rain that doing 40kph in a 110kph zone was a real thing, and even then, the standing water on the Hwy was deep enough to throw waves I'm also more than happy that the huge "BEASTS" that Matt calls dogs didn't eat me for lunch, I'm sure the sniffs and licks were more to "taste test" me, over being to friendly Now to work out what colour to get it painted, panel match, or gloss black........first world problems are real
    • Actually I might have figured out. Looks like there is a tab according to google images but it's hidden. Silly me.
    • No clips on this one like the other connector. Only that red tab that I can push slightly up.
    • For any loom connector that has an obvious release that resists pushing far enough to unclip, just spray some silicone lube into it. You might also benefit from using a bent screwdriver or small pick to push in the right place at the right angle.
    • Hey all, I went to try and fix my indicator not canceling, but I couldn't remove the clockspring cable under the column so I could twist that green thin. Anyone know how to remove this cable? I see this red tab but didn't have any luck. I was thinking of unscrewing it but wasn't sure if it would cause issues. I did notice for my indicator stalk, 2 out of 3 cables were plugged in but the last cable wouldn't fit in the stalk. I'm getting it's for fog lights. It was like this when I originally pulled it off.
