hey!

just wonderin if anyone can tell me wats goin on wit my car! i installed one of them turbotech boost tees, bumped the boost up to 10psi, ran well for a short while then started missing n spluttering inbetween 4000-7000rpm. i scored some free dyno time (only rwkw readings), after adjusting boost found the only way i could get a decent kw figure without it missing and carrying on was to set boost on maximum 7.8psi.

does this mean i need to get my car on a dyno that can plug into my ecu and change air fuel ratios, timing ect? just wondering what the next step is with it and why my car is doing this when i have heard people saying that they can run 10psi constantly on fairly stock 33's n not have any dramas at all!

mods on my car are full exhst, hks pod, boost controller n heavy duty clutch

thankls for the help guys!

Brett

its been covered a few million times. its the factory ecu protection detecting excess airflow. time for a piggyback computer.

cant tune the stock ecu so u need a piggyback or aftermarket engine management

Spark plugs??? my thought or maybe a dodgy coil....

Mine is on 10psi and I have no problems whats so ever havent hit boost cut once..

Chris

Yeah i agree, spark plugs mate. The gap would be too high, factory gap is like 1mm which is great for standard boost but as air is compressed more you need stronger spark to ignite it. Drop your spark plug gap down to about 0.8mm. This should fix most problems. The computer on the skyline will run horribly rich after about 10psi, so when you want more than 10psi you need to start looking at ECU stuff!

Sounds like my problem to, currently running 12.3-12.5 psi, no problem for a while, but now it has started to act similar to what black_gtst's car is doing, very annoying, first i thought it might be a bad connected cable, but after reading this ill have a look at the sparkplugs!

Sounds like either one of 2 things.

It's running 2 rich and is having trouble igniting - regapped sparks ^ and a piggyback like SAFC ^^^^^ will help fix this.

The other is the ECU is pulling back timing and dumping more fuel in because the knock microphones are picking up excessive noise or knocking, which is indicative of another issue. e.g., leaning out, or intake temps are to hot, the list goes on, etc.

    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
