Hi um i have been wondering and debating with my friends for quite a while, what makes the BOV's (or the majority of) on VL turbo's sound so bad? Like normally i dont mind the tshhhhhhh sound but the VL turbo's go tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh like in fast succesion at a high pitch and its hilarious. I have noticed HKS sequential BOV's which i assume let the air off out of 2 openings and thought perhaps this could be the cause of queerness. Also i was wondering if it could be that the BOV is like loose or far to small or something? Like its slapping open then coming back down on itself and being slapped open again by the air rushing out. Could it be like absurd amounts of compressor wheel surge or something?

I know thats not really skyline related but well i dont know a huge amount about turbo'd cars and have been laughing at VL's for like 5 years trying to figure out why they (or the vast majority of) them sound so gay. ( and they got like r31 engines in em right?)

That noise you are reffering to is called compressor surge. It personal choice whether you like it or not but the reason why it makes that noise becasue as you take your foot off the throtle their is no BOV for the air coming from the turbo to ecscape so it goes back out through the turbo making that tsh tsh tsh tsh noise.

No blow off valve & no intercooler

They do have an intercooler, finding a decent picture of a stock RB30ET engine bay is the difficult part

See right before the throttle body, that is a factory VL Turbo intercooler.

It can still make that sound with that crossover pipe because it doesnt have a BOV(im pretty sure) that tiny cooler thing isnt really going to effect the compressor surge. If its taken you years to work out what that noise is well you havnt been round very long cause theres normally a thread about it weekly

what

ahh but my car doesnt have a bov and doesnt make the queer noise. Is it because of a larger turbo size? Like more air banking up and rushing back into the turbine when ur intake(?!?) closes makes the noise right, so a bigger turbo would produce more of that and make more of a noise out of it?

lol, that's not much of an intercooler :)

r32 gts-turbo- when i got a new motor fitted in my skyline rb25/30, and at that time i didnt have a bov for it (now it does) it made the exact noise but yeh i didnt mind it too much, but mine flutters at low psi then has the usual bov whoosh at higher boost levels

    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
    • Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!
    • Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.
    • Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
