hahahahaha.....Now this is a real pain in the arse job!

I did mine and removed all the rubber coating.

the best way is to use thinners on a rag and wipe over the rubber coating to make it soft and wrinkle, but rub straight off, So that the thinners doesn't affect the plastic underneath.

and use a coil or wooden wedge (I used my fingernails) to remove the soft rubber.

Just do small sections at a time, it will take a bit of time to do!

when rubber is removed and plastic is cleaned (use prepsol) , then plastic prime the parts and then paint!

enjoy!

Ha Ha ! Ive done several of these now and got a couple waiting to be finished off and painted. I found the best way to do it is to just carefully scrape off the soft coating with a lable scraper, stanley blade and then go over it with scotch brite to get into all the nooks and crannies. Its time consuming but worth it with the scotch brite. Then I sand the whole thing down with some very fine wet and dry sand paper and water to get rid of any nicks or scratches. Then I wipe it down with metholated spirits and apply two coats of plastic primer and then two coats of matt black high temp engine enamel. The last one I did for a mate I also filled in the blanked off hole next to the air con sensor vent and also filled in the coin holder next to the side mirror adjster. Came up a treat.
