its been covered a few times.

its a mech locked diff controlled electronically. when the a-lsd computer detects traction loss (watches the abs speed sensors for each wheel) it performs a mech lock on the diff which spins both wheels. when this occurs SLIP on the dash comes on and you should have more traction. normal r33's have a viscous lsd which users fluid when heated up to perform a lock.

alsd has the advantage of mech lock when you need it but doesnt wear out as its only active when it detects traciton loss
