51Jay , I changed the g/box oil in my R33 , it took 3.5L to fill it so that it dribbled out of the filling hole on the side . Seems this is the method most people use to fill their g/box , if your figure of 2.8L for the RB25DET is correct then a lot of people are overfilling their boxes . I hope we dont all start popping seals .

I filled my box with Castrol VMX80 and it didnt get rid of the annoying rough shift . So I bought some Nulon G70 Manual Gearbox Treatment which is an additive which claims to provide smoother gear changes , reduce noise and wear .

I'll post back here with any info after I try this stuff for those with a similar problem as there seems to be a few .

G'day all , I've added the Nulon G70 , a 125mL tube of it and yes it does help with smoothing out gear changes .

Personally I think if you can afford the Redline oil then get it . For those on a tighter budget $14.50 for a tube of Nulon G70 may do the trick .

Also I read my owners manual and it does look as if its 2.8L for the manual g/box in a r33 RB25DET so I also adjusted the fill level .

So after adding the Nulon G70 I noticed a smoother shift right away , still not what I'd call a slick shift but no more crunching .

Can anyone recommend a diff oil for the R33 LSD? I have heard of Shell synthetic and redline? Which redline was it? I just did the gearbox oil last night with the lightweight redline stuff, and yet to drive it, but am thinking of doing the diff soon. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Locutus: I used the shell because reline is hard to come by here (country NSW) But its up you, I have no quarms with shell....

Anyone else who has done thier diff notice that black shit stuck to the bungs??? I was told that that is the hard surface that has chipped off the gearfaces inside.

I'm changing my gearbox oil soon and have decided to go with the Red Line Shockproof.

My question is... Should I use the SuperLight or the LightWeight??? I tend to thrash my car a fair bit. FYI the SuperLight is rated at 70W90 and the LightWeight is rated at 75W140.

P.S. I have an R34 GTT.

Nissan recommends a 75W90 for gearbox...so i would go superlight weight (same with Diffs, 80W90...so 75W90)

BUT that being said i had lightweight in mine a while ago and was Great but when you trashed a bit and oil warmed up...down shifting got rather tight (gotta push harder to get into gear)

while i have used Redline Oil, and it is fabulous stuff!!! KNOW THIS it is designed for racing...and therefore designed to be changed out every 10000k...so while it is great, it doesnt last very long

for the above reason is why i have changed to Royal Purple Oil and it is just as good (or better) in every way as Redline Oil

so my recommendation is +1 for Royal Purple MaxGear

use LSD oils for LSD. shouldnt get a whine out of it. gonna change my oils with castrol oils at the workshop. 75w-90 should be fine for gearbox

lol, you realise the question you answered was asked in March 2003!!!? How do you find these threads to reply to? and why?

I have often wondered the same thing! Especially in the for sale forums where people make an offer for something posted 5 years ago.

Oh, and please don't ask me how I found this thread or why I replied to it. Trade secret!

    • Hi everyone, I’m Dave from Canberra. Here's a few pics of my 1992 R32 GTST coupe which I imported back in 2006. Only mods so far are HKS Hi-power cat back exhaust, K&N filter, ATC Volanti steering wheel, Pioneer stereo, amp and sub. This was my daily driver up until 2015 and sadly hasn’t been driven at all in the last 5 years due to marriage, work, and kids taking up most of my time and spare cash.As such its in need of a bit of TLC and one of my goals for this year is to get it back to running condition and maybe look into club/historic rego. I’ve joined SAU so I can ask a few questions along the way (although I promise to google Current Problem +SAU beforehand!)
    • From talking to the mx5 guys the NC doesn't actually need bonnet vents like the earlier NA and NB models, due to a better designed cooling system and undertray design There's plenty of them used as street cars and weekend track toys running anywhere from around 170 to 250kw with stock non vented bonnets, I initially was going to get some bonnet vents, but, as they are not actually required, I'll put vents on hold for a while and just monitor temps, though I do need to get something to actually monitor engine oil temps though, coolant temp can be pulled from the OBD2, but the oil gauge in the car is not actual oil temp, it is only a calculation based off coolant temp and RPM ☹️ They do recommend upgrading the radiator, which I have already done with a triple pass, and the only other thing they recommend for a street car is heat management, like I talked about above to protect bits in the engine bay from radiant heat, and to either replace the nearly 20 year old plastic coolant expansion tank, which I have done, or get a aftermarket alloy jobbie for some bling They did also say that if I wanted to track the car on occasion a oil cooler and sump baffle would be required, and as I already have had a sump baffle installed when the engine was out......... I'm going to get a oil cooler with a thermostat....... just in case I do eventually track the car, but probably not, but still maybe...🤪
