Drivebai
HI, When my car is idling, the engine fan seems to be really loud. Also when you rev the engine is the fan suppose to increase it's speed with the revs as well? (this occurs when the engine's cold and when it's warm i vaguely remember reading somwhere that this was a clutch bearing problem or something but i can't find that thread anywhere. Any help would be great. Thanks Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/114452-loud-engine-fan-is-this-a-problem/ Share on other sites
MerlinTheHapyPig
the engine driven fan uses a viscous clutch to prevent it from spinning too fast, with the car off you should be able to turn the fan freely, if it's stuck/siezed then that's probably the cause of your problem. Kryostaisis
with the car off, gently move it around if you can feel any sort of friction, even the slightest bit, it will cause your fan to vibrate and become noisy. it wont harm your engine extensively, but it will put more strain on it, also your belts will experience the same thing. i had a smililar problem at 5000rpm... i replaced the fan and hub with new ones.. but in the end opted to use a thermo-fan to suit my application. oh, and make sure you check your hub, there should be 4 nuts that hold it in place. make sure they are all tight, it could be just the hub becoming loose Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/114452-loud-engine-fan-is-this-a-problem/#findComment-2111078 Share on other sites
Drivebai
Cheers guys Will check this out. I can move it but it doesn'tspin too freely. IF i try to spin it it will move maybe a quarter of a rotation. Busky2k
Test it when the car is warm. Don't do it cold as there will be excessive friction because you need to spin it at idle speed for 10 or so seconds before it becomes freely spinning (due to the oil distribution in the viscous clutch).
