Ok well this is the deal. I own a series 2 r33 skyline. Love it to bits and have kept it reasonably stock with only a turboback system and thats enough for me cause means less hassles. Ok well for my birthday my freinds all chipped in and bought me a Blitz LM spec FMIC kit which is a direct fit hooks up to factory pipes and stuff.

I am not going to boost my car or do other stuff to it so would you recomment i install it??? Last night i was driving in the cold condition and the car drives heaps mad compared to when its hot so im wondering maybe this will make it run awesome in hot weather. Not to sure if i'll get any negative affects like making it run super rich and stuff or mess with other stuff like idle, ecu etc. I once slapped on a bov which i was given as a gift and totally regretted it. so yeh what do you guys think???? would my car suffer from this or would my cars engine/ factory ecu longevity suffer??

check that it is a direct fit.. i'm pretty sure it's a direct replacement on a GTR however i'm not sure how it can be on a GTS-T as they have a SMIC not a FMIC..

probably not a huge amount of point putting it on if your not going to boost it at all.. you could put it up to about 10/11psi.. but that's about it..

Yes it is a direct fit for a gtst, it has the return pipe that goes back under the cooler.

I only had an exhaust and pod when i installed my blitz lm cooler. Yes you can notice a big difference, feels more torquey and punchy. Also felt better in hot weather also. Well worth fitting it

Hey 180_mph I was speaking to the mechanic and they told me the same as you. I dont have a pod but a apexi panel filter and it improves performace. did you notice the car running richer or anything negative.

Yeh i hate hot weather doesnt drive as good in cold weather. if putting a fmic makes my car drive like it does in cold weather all year around then it would be worth it. I know a couple of s15's running stock boost and just an exhaust with fmic and runs great all year round just checking if its the same on skylines.

extra lag? seriously you won't notice anything difference. those that tell you it make any difference are kidding themselves

the only downside to getting a FMIC is the cost. that is alreay taken care of in your case :D (some nice friends you have)

it basically means your car will never detonate due to excess intake temps. ever. what's the downside to that?

plus it looks great with a nice big FMIC sitting in the front bumper..

put it on. love it. stop procrastinating - book it in tomorrow!

The can ran 7pis before install(stock boost) and 7psi after install. YOu can easily notice the gains. I couldnt notice the car running any richer at all ie. smoke or low km's, but it may have been slightly.

Nothing negative at all. And no extra lag at all.

The lower intake temp the better, cold air is denser and by ratio more oxygen packed in it.

I installed an air temp sensor for the microtech and watching the temps in summer, it goes 1 or 2 below air outside temp but if it rains it drops by halve.

I guess the question thats need to be answered is:

"does a FMIC make the car run like as if its always a cold night? even on warm days?"

we all know that on cold nights, our cars run much better, will a FMIC reproduce this effect in all conditions?

book him in Davo

I'm pretty sure it been covered before but I'll try to remember.

when RB25 owners have upgraded from stock intercooler to fmic, they GAINED in many ways.

1.) car is more punchy.

2.) No increase in lag.

3.) actually gained more power too.

Considering that the stock cooler on the r33 is same as r32 (in size and efficiency), you can see how you would gain with a fmic.

the stocker is pretty crap in general on an RB20 so going up 500cc and about 30kw using the same cooler is pretty crap.

put it this way, by puting this fmic on (nice choice by your friends I might add), during the day, your motor will be seeing the same sort of temps as it does at night.

and during the night, you will get even better performance.

being a fello SAU member, I am willing to help you out if you don't put this thing on your car, by personally, taking it out of your site for you.

:D

put it on, reduced pressure drop across the core, more heat sink area to effectively reduce heat soak in traffic, plus the greater core area is going to aid cooling immensely when moving along even with stock boost.

Those that tell it wont make any extra lag are not observant enough to notice.

agree with abo bob. there is always noticable throttle lag when going from stock SMIC to FMIC. there is more phyiscal pipework and large core to pressurize each time. also many other things cause detonation so its not the one stop solution to getting rid of detonation.

a fmic is only as good as the airflow through it and the airtemp

Nah I found even in a warm day it wont run like it would on cold night. But the performance difference between a hot day and not wasnt as large with a FMIC. On a hot day, everything else heats up more like the plenum etc which also affects performance.

Well I guess its probably not worth me going out to get one. I always thought that it would make the car run nicely on a hot day.

Cheers

    • Wideband is worth setting up if only for tuning purposes. I would not mess with the ignition system unless there's a misfire. HKS crank trigger is popular out here for the relatively easily sourced Denso crank sensor, not a bad idea to install as well regardless of power level on a standalone. Boost leak test is worth thinking about. Oil pressure sensor tied to a fuel cut isn't a bad idea either. Getting the tune figured out is a good idea. Without putting eyes on it and getting under it there's no way for us to tell you exactly what it needs but most likely you're down to the last 10% that will make a big, big difference in how happy you are with the car.
    • Doing a refresh of my 33 and can see a few websites stating they sell the entire main carpet for our cars, but they all have generic photos which is fine, i understand they are custom made to order.  Just seeing if anyone has got it done or had any experience with this, as i would only want to do it if the fit and finish was as good as oem https://carmatsdirect.com.au/products/moulded-carpet-or-vinyl-for-nissan-skyline-r33-1993-1998-coupe https://knoxautocarpets.com.au/moulded-carpets/nissan/skyline/skyline-r-33-1993-1998/
    • Any plans for E85? If so, add flex fuel sensor.   I'd probably add in the sensors I mentioned above if the Link will support using them for engine protection. With water pressure, you need to be able to effectively set it that "If temp > X, and pressure = atmospheric, shutdown" as at running temp, you should be able to read pressure in the cooling system. If pressure suddenly disappears, it means the water went some where, and this is a quicker reaction than waiting on water temp to go up (Which, can take a little longer than you'd like, considering it now has to wait for hot air to heat it up) Oil pressure, Oil temp, both would be on my list too if you're looking to add sensors. Wideband O2. And at least one EGT sensor. If you're feeling deluxe, put in individual runner EGTs. Single EGT sensor is more so forget about a specific number, get used to "What is normal EGTs", and then keep an eye on it, if it starts going away from "normal" it's a sign something is wrong (Also, things like the tune can still start going out of spec, but EGTs may not show it, for example one injector starts running leaning, so ECU richens everything up, now 5 out of 6 cylinders are rich, and running cool, with one cylinder lean and running hotter, so it's not perfect) Then there is your other things to look at non sensor related, but you may have already done, or have underway, and that would be things like building a sump for more oil, and better oil control under high G-Forces (Cornering, brakes, acceleration). Basically, the above is worth looking/thinking about, if the ECU can do protective stuff with it, and you continue to use it how you are (Drive it to the track, thrash it, drive home, repeat once every 3 to 4 months)
    • Can also confirm these work a treat for most balljoints and bushes. If you have access to a big rattle gun, they make the job so much easier and quicker, compared to using a socket wrench or shifter on the c-clamp 👍
    • Its sort of street but got used for circuit sprints on account of I never drive it on the road because I dont have the time to spare. So it usage was sits around for months at a time then gets driven either 50 or 250 kms to the track followed by 20 laps followed by 50 or 250kms home followed by stuck in the shed until next time. So yeah neither fish nor fowl. Just dont want to break it on the track as a preference. Hence the fairly short sensor/mod list. Probably more worried about it pinging itself to destruction more so than anything oil related.
