hey everyone.. i know this is going to be another one of those "how much power will this b" type of thread, but im new to rb20's and i was wondering about their true potentials

ive recently "downgraded" from my r33 gts-t, so going form rb25det, to rb20det

i find the power decrease and acceleration to be quite a downstep

i was just wondering what i can do to the rb20 to make it a fair bit more powerful, however im just concerned with bolt ons, not serious engine work

basically what i have is a stock as a rock 1993 r32 gts-4, allthough this one has a gtr gearbox, well basically gtr everything as far as running gear goes, but it has rb20det motor and gts-t brakes!

i dont know how this will go, and if someone else can think of better modifications, however i am leaning towards the folowing modifications (keeping in mind the reason i downgraded was due to police busting me driving the r33 and you can only have r32 on p's as far as turbo skylines go in victoria), so the mods cant stand out like dogs balls, they have to be dicrete

1. 3" turbo back exhaust

2. black front mounted intercooler with pipes that return underneath cooler and use standard pipes

3. r33 gcg highflowed turbo running 16psi (can they run more?) fits under standard heatshield?

4. gtr 440cc injectors

5. gtr fuel pump

6. z32 afm

7. retuned factory ecu

i asume what i have chosen as far as mods are concerned will all work sufficently on the rb20 with minimal lag

will the standard internals be able to cope with this much presure?

what sort of flywheel/rear wheel/all whell kw's would i be looking at with those sort of mods

thanks guys

You have asked (honestly) for advice, so I asume you want (honest) advice.

If you want power, handling and performance - then buy a GTR and cut your losses.

If you are really handy on the spanners, then drop in an RB26.

If you are a magazine wanting a differenent article, then do a RB24 bottom end.

Just my advice.

thanks for the reply, but not really what i was after...

i said i couldnt have an r33 gts-t due to power reasons and the police... an r32 gtr isnt going to be any different!

i cant have an rb26 for this reason.. hence why i want to work the rb20 for some power

i dont have the money to go screwing around with the engine itself, eg hybrid engines... thats why i want to look into good efficient bolt ons

-Ruffels

expect about 220rwkw-ish.

it seems to be the norm with a hiflow and tuned ecu with that sort of boost.

it will be better than stock but keep in mind this..

your car weighs the same as a GTR.

It's already laggy with stock turbo.

it will get a little laggier with more top end.

I've got the same as you.. 4 years older, 2 extra doors, but still, the same thing.

If you will be happy with the 220rwkw mark then that's good.

I think that works out to be somewhere near 190awkw or so.. not sure.

those mods will work well however your goal of minimal lag is very optimistic. as was said above the gts4 is a heavy car and a lot heavier than the standard r32.

you may make that amount of power but your going to be driving 4 wheels as opposed to 2 and in a car which weighs close to 1500kgs (think its 1460). you may get close to what you had before but without forgies or a hybrid engine i think its still going to be a bit lacking

here in nz we can drive whatever car we want so i guess we have that to be fortunate for.

you need to talk with mr brisby

I have virtualy exactly as you spec'd - will know next week after Dr Drift ecu dynotune what it will go to.

Will let you know but expecting around 220 RWkw - the stock bottom end will handle much more, have you seen those rods!?

The mods you have suggested will cost you quite a few thousand dollars. So the call about the GTR is not altogether unreasonable.

GTS4 to me is a bit of a no-mans-vehicle unless you want to spend a fair bit of money on it.

And well, rb20det in a heavier chasis - what can you say... it's not a good combination. The only thing suckier than that would be having an auto strapped behind it.

there are ways to make the car faster without putting out more power.

i would do the mods you have suggested if you have the bankroll for it and speak to sam (dr drift) about a remap. he can offer great advice and some good pricing. can also remap the pants off it

only reason the gtr is out of the question is due to power/weight laws

where as with the rb20, you can drive them legally on plates in victoria.. and the mods i have chosen arent stand out recognisable ones

hance r33 turbo, painted black front mount etc

Mark, just drive the thing around and try not to spend money on it.

IMO money on an RB20 is dead money.

I know Brisby is gonna shed a tear over that, but he has a high-mount etc.

Stuff that you arent going to do like the high-mount for defect reasons, plus you top the scales in a big way compared to a R32 gts-t.

Wait till your off you P's and then get something that has more mod potential, or drop an RB26 in it then and go from there.

that said there is an 11 second gts4 running here in nz on the stock rb20det.

if you go onto skylinesdownunder.co.nz and ask about a car called FLAMEN some of the guys on there will be able to give you some more information

from what i remember it has forged pistons a t3/t4, 550cc injectors, link computer and runs late 11's without to many problems

the one thing thats good about your gts4 is you have the magical (turn off the hicas) fuse

Forgive me, but i don't see your delema? Your trying to stay under the power/wieght ratio for legallity.

GTR and R33 to powerful - fair enough but why are you going to spend all that money, time and effort on a slugg? As far as I see it, You have two options

1. buy a shitter and save your money for a weapon when your P's expires. (added bonus is, most people learn heaps about maintaining a car very quickly when you own a shitter because if you don't maintain it. . . . it dies).

2. Take your skyline blinkers off and find a car that has the attributes you like and is also close to mark you wish to reach so with minor mods it will be there!

Alternatively if you already have the GTS-4 then invest time not money into keeping it neat to retain what ever resale value it has. Which to be honest is 5/8ths of f**k all (Ishould know, I've got one! :P )

How is it a stock rb20det if it has forged pistons and the likes? And i presume you mean turn off the altessa system fuse if you are referring to simply running rwd?

My names NOT Brisby but I hope to make some of you eat your words and change your minds sometime soon.

I paid $33K for my GTS4 (AUTO) nearly ten years ago and I am not going to dump it for a GTR.

Although I may go RB30/25 If I have to eat my words on the RB20.:worship:
