Intercoolers And Bov's

i have heard from one of my mechanicaly minded friends that you can mount your bov onto the piping of your intercooler to give it that flutter effect, does anyoone know if this is true? im new to the turbo scene still learning

Flutter has nothing to do with the wastegate. It is compressor surge, and will happen if the bov doesn't open when you close the throttle, there is nowhere for the compressed air in the intake pipe to go, so it goes back through the turbo, the flutter noise you can hear is the air as it passes over the compressor turbine.

This has all been covered a million times on here.

so plastic stan it seems you know abit about bov's, i know this is a really stupid question but if i was to buy a bov tomorrow where and how would i install it? i know its a stupid question im still learning

And from my crappy knowlegde of cars, and in case morgz is as dumb as me, to much flutter is bad for your turbo

If you really want flutter just take the BOV off Dont expect the turbo to last but im sure the sickness is worth it

morgz r33 - your car has a bov already.

see how the pipe goes across your engine and to the trottle body where the accelerator cable is.. well just to the right of that, on the side of the pipe (towards the back of the engine bay) is the factory bov. it has a rubber hose that plumbs it back in to the inlet.

if you want to hear the sound of it, get a pod filter instead of the air box and you will be able to hear it.

if you must have a bov that goes pssshhh then buy one that has an adapter for a skyline then you can just unbolt the factory one, bolt in the new one, connect the little vaccum hose on top of it, block off the big rubber hose that plumbs back and you're done.

well, I could use that one to demonstrate how long the turbo will last with a BOV too....

I sort of posted to illustrate the nature of Bunta's post, ie, its pretty much worthless, and almost paranoid in nature - I think someone has been paying too much attention to BOV salesmen.

I have been running (edit) without a bov for around 18months, on a second had turbo, track thrashing (drift) regularly and the turbo is fine,

...but anyway, the worth of a bov is a completely different story, and has been done to death also

I had an ex rally ford laser TX3 which had no bov.

hi flowed turbo and 15psi..

never broke a turbo.

but my skyline has the factory bov and it runs smoother with it on..

hey thx for the info, that site is really good, i was hoping maybe someone can post up a pic of the stock bov and where it is ? i know its stupid but it will make my learning process a whole lot quicker i have allready got a pod and it does sound good but i still want it to be louder! thx for the help
